A key reason for their success on Saturday night was the connection between quarterback Justin Herbert and wide receiver Keenan Allen.</p><p>Coming back after a season with the Chicago Bears, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-keenan-allen-joins-legendary-company-60th-touchdown">Allen balled out in his return to the Chargers</a>. The undrafted wide receiver caught seven passes for 68 yards and one touchdown. Allen was a major contributor to Herbert’s big night, with the quarterback finding the wide receiver open on multiple occasions.</p><p>After the game, Allen <a href="https://x.com/chargers/status/1964168036174406098" rel="noopener">was understandably hyped up</a>. The wide receiver would go on to be one of the best wide receivers in Chargers history. Allen is only one of two wide receivers in the team’s franchise history to accrue more than 10,000 yards, the other being legendary tight end Antonio Gates.</p><p>During the 2024 offseason, Allen signed with the Chicago Bears. The wide receiver had a down year in the Windy City, acquiring only 744 yards on 70 catches and seven touchdowns. There was concern that Allen was already reaching the twilight of his career, especially considering his age. His signing with the Chargers was not necessarily a needle-moving acquisition for the team.</p><p>Well, it seems like Allen will benefit heavily from the Chargers’ revamped offense. The aging wide receiver will not be tasked with carrying the full load of the offense like before. The hope is that Ladd McConkey and the rejuvenated Quentin Johnston will open up space for Allen to work his magic in the middle of the field.</p><p>The expectations for the Chargers this season were that they would play like a classic Jim Harbaugh team: an emphasis on the running game and the passing game taking a backseat. The win ended the Chargers’ seven-game losing streak to Kansas City and improved their record against the Chiefs to 4-19 over the past 23 meetings. It was also the Chiefs’ first regular-season loss abroad under coach Andy Reid, ending their undefeated streak in international games in London, Mexico City, and Frankfurt.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-justin-herbert-earns-major-props-veteran-qb">Quarterback Justin Herbert led a precise Chargers offense</a>, finishing with 318 passing yards and three touchdowns, his first 300-yard, three-touchdown game since Week 10 of the 2023 season against Detroit. Herbert’s performance showcased the impact of an improved receiving corps and the strategic guidance of offensive coordinator Greg Roman. His decisive 19-yard scramble on a third-and-14 late in the fourth quarter effectively sealed the game for Los Angeles.</p><p>The game also featured a historic milestone for veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen. While expressing excitement to be back with his original franchise, Allen still seemed to harbor a slight grudge against the organization for how his 2024 offseason unfolded.</p><p>“I feel like it could’ve been prevented at some point,” Allen said. “But it is what it is. Chicago was a great organization, great people. Shoutout to those guys for a hell of a season.”</p><p>When asked if he means the trade could have been prevented by accepting a pay cut, Allen quickly rejected the notion: “No.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/ex-chargers-wr-keenan-allen-breaks-silence-on-trade-to-bears">Chargers sent Allen to the Bears</a> for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They have adequately addressed the need with their signing of Allen, the latest move in that regard.</p><p>Los Angeles’ first move to address its offensive concerns came in the 2025 NFL Draft when the team selected Tre Harris in the second round. They went on to take KeAndre Lambert-Smith and tight end Oronde Gadsden II in the fifth round, a pair of investments that have paid off tremendously thus far.</p><p>The recent flurry of moves turned the Chargers from a receiver-needy team into one that is nearly dealing with an embarrassment of riches. Harris’ rookie holdout allowed Lambert-Smith and Gadsden to thrive in OTAs and training camp, making them the team’s stars of the early offseason.</p><p>While Allen has not played for head coach Jim Harbaugh before, he has four years of experience with Herbert. However, many predict that the fifth-round prospect could be the biggest loser of the team’s recent signing of Keenan Allen.</p><p>Although Lambert-Smith has been the team’s biggest standout of the offseason, he is <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45710101/2025-nfl-training-camp-los-angeles-chargers-updates-buzz-intel-position-battles" rel="noopener">likely to suffer</a> from the team signing Allen on Tuesday, ESPN’s Khris Rhim speculates. Allen is not guaranteed a return to the starting lineup, but he will likely be a key offensive contributor, which would further bury Lambert-Smith on the depth chart.</p><p>Lambert-Smith has impressed the team throughout the offseason, culminating with a stellar performance against the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame game. Yet, he already figured to be facing an uphill battle, with Ladd McConkey, Tre Harris, Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis all ostensibly ahead of him on the depth chart. Adding Allen to the group only further muddles the situation.</p><p>It is not difficult to gauge that the best days are behind the 33-year-old Allen. Regardless, Allen racked up 744 receiving yards in 2024, second on the Chicago Bears behind DJ Moore. The veteran played a key role as a safety blanket for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, but still found himself without a job until late in training camp.</p><h2><b>Chargers reunite Justin Herbert with Keenan Allen in free agency</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Justin-Herbert-and-Keenan-Allen.jpg"><figcaption>Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Allen now returns to the franchise that originally drafted him, but he will not simply return to his former role. The longtime slot receiver will have to work his way back up the depth chart, with Ladd McConkey thriving in that role as a rookie in 2024.</p><p>Chargers spent the first 11 years of his career with the Chargers before getting traded to the Bears ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft. They <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1953091245724619086" rel="noopener">unknowingly completed</a> one of the most fascinating full-circle storylines in recent NFL memory. After being traded to the Chicago Bears in 2024 due to salary cap constraints, Allen is back in powder blue on a one-year, $8.52 million deal. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-gm-100-real-keenan-allen-ladd-mcconkey-plan">Allen’s return brings not only experience and leadership</a> but also a unique connection to one of the team’s rising stars in Ladd McConkey.</p><p>When Allen was dealt to Chicago, the Chargers received the No. 10 overall pick. A piece later flipped to the Patriots as part of a deal to move up in the second round and select McConkey. Meanwhile, younger receivers like Tre Harris, Quentin Johnston, and rookie Keandre Lambert-Smith may see reduced opportunities.</p><p>Regardless, Herbert benefits most, armed with veteran stability and a deep, talented receiver corps.
