A key reason for their success on Saturday night was the connection between quarterback Justin Herbert and wide receiver Keenan Allen.</p><p>Coming back after a season with the Chicago Bears, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-keenan-allen-joins-legendary-company-60th-touchdown">Allen balled out in his return to the Chargers</a>. The undrafted wide receiver caught seven passes for 68 yards and one touchdown. Allen was a major contributor to Herbert’s big night, with the quarterback finding the wide receiver open on multiple occasions.</p><p>After the game, Allen <a href="https://x.com/chargers/status/1964168036174406098" rel="noopener">was understandably hyped up</a>. The wide receiver would go on to be one of the best wide receivers in Chargers history. Allen is only one of two wide receivers in the team’s franchise history to accrue more than 10,000 yards, the other being legendary tight end Antonio Gates.</p><p>During the 2024 offseason, Allen signed with the Chicago Bears. The wide receiver had a down year in the Windy City, acquiring only 744 yards on 70 catches and seven touchdowns. There was concern that Allen was already reaching the twilight of his career, especially considering his age. His signing with the Chargers was not necessarily a needle-moving acquisition for the team.</p><p>Well, it seems like Allen will benefit heavily from the Chargers’ revamped offense. The aging wide receiver will not be tasked with carrying the full load of the offense like before. The hope is that Ladd McConkey and the rejuvenated Quentin Johnston will open up space for Allen to work his magic in the middle of the field.</p><p>The expectations for the Chargers this season were that they would play like a classic Jim Harbaugh team: an emphasis on the running game and the passing game taking a backseat. However, many predict that the fifth-round prospect could be the biggest loser of the team’s recent signing of Keenan Allen.</p><p>Although Lambert-Smith has been the team’s biggest standout of the offseason, he is <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45710101/2025-nfl-training-camp-los-angeles-chargers-updates-buzz-intel-position-battles" rel="noopener">likely to suffer</a> from the team signing Allen on Tuesday, ESPN’s Khris Rhim speculates. Allen is not guaranteed a return to the starting lineup, but he will likely be a key offensive contributor, which would further bury Lambert-Smith on the depth chart.</p><p>Lambert-Smith has impressed the team throughout the offseason, culminating with a stellar performance against the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame game. Yet, he already figured to be facing an uphill battle, with Ladd McConkey, Tre Harris, Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis all ostensibly ahead of him on the depth chart. Adding Allen to the group only further muddles the situation.</p><p>It is not difficult to gauge that the best days are behind the 33-year-old Allen. Regardless, Allen racked up 744 receiving yards in 2024, second on the Chicago Bears behind DJ Moore. The veteran played a key role as a safety blanket for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, but still found himself without a job until late in training camp.</p><h2><b>Chargers reunite Justin Herbert with Keenan Allen in free agency</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Justin-Herbert-and-Keenan-Allen.jpg"><figcaption>Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Allen now returns to the franchise that originally drafted him, but he will not simply return to his former role. After being traded to the Chicago Bears in 2024 due to salary cap constraints, Allen is back in powder blue on a one-year, $8.52 million deal. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-gm-100-real-keenan-allen-ladd-mcconkey-plan">Allen’s return brings not only experience and leadership</a> but also a unique connection to one of the team’s rising stars in Ladd McConkey.</p><p>When Allen was dealt to Chicago, the Chargers received the No. 10 overall pick. A piece later flipped to the Patriots as part of a deal to move up in the second round and select McConkey. After spending a season with the Chicago Bears, the 33-year-old Allen is back with the franchise that took him in the third round (76th overall) of the 2013 NFL draft and played with for 11 seasons before he got traded to Chicago in 2024.</p><p>During his lone season with the Bears, Allen displayed reliability downfield, even though Chicago operated with an inexperienced quarterback in rookie Caleb Williams. Allen was second among Bears players with 744 receiving yards and No. 1 with seven touchdown catches while recording 70 receptions on 121 targets through 15 games.</p><p>Allen can still be a prolific target for the Chargers, but one concern about him is whether his body will be able to hold up for an entire season. That has been a constant challenge for Allen in his pro career in the NFL. He has not played a full season since 2019. It is the second time they have brought back a legendary veteran receiver, with the Mike Williams experiment ending in a quick retirement. But after a solid season with the Chicago Bears, Allen is back in LA. A lot has changed with the Bolts, but Chargers GM Joe Horitz <a href="https://x.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1952902187191058913" rel="noopener">is not concerned about</a> Allen’s fit with Ladd McConkey.</p><p>“I think Dj Moore’s played a lot of slot, and they both were on the field 80% of the time last year,” Horitz said, per ESPN’s Kris Rhim. “You get good players on the field and you play them.”</p><p>The Chargers GM is referencing Allen’s one year with the Bears as a blueprint they can use for this season. McConkey came in last year and dominated as a rookie in the slot. Allen had previously manned the slot for 11 seasons with the Bolts. While Williams would have been a better complement to McConkey, Allen can work there as well.</p><p>The Chargers should prioritize McConkey’s development over anything else in their wide receiver room this year. He had a fantastic rookie season, with 82 catches and 1,149 yards. His connection with Justin Herbert was strong and can help lift the quarterback to the next level. Allen is a nice piece to have, but not at the expense of McConkey’s development.</p><p>The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/chargers-news-rb-najee-harris-puts-steelers-on-blast"> Chargers also added Najee Harris to their running back room</a> and are hoping to get more out of Quentin Johnston. But the offense is going to run through McConkey, who has quickly become one of the top slot receivers in the league. On Monday, head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed some details about the meeting, and it sounds like he is interested in potentially adding Allen to the roster.</p><p>Reports indicate that Harbaugh, who is 61 years old, stated that the meeting with Allen <a href="https://x.com/danielrpopper/status/1952446991302291654" rel="noopener">was a good one</a>, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic. Although that may be the case, Harbaugh did not reveal whether the Chargers plan to sign Allen or not.</p><p>“Jim Harbaugh said the visit with Keenan Allen ‘went well.’ Did not provide any update on when a deal could be signed.”</p><p>Additionally, Harbaugh claimed that the 33-year-old wide receiver looked good <a href="https://x.com/krisrhim1/status/1952446244816835063" rel="noopener">during his workout</a> with the team per Kris Rhim of ESPN. The veteran coach admitted it’s not technically his choice to possibly sign Allen and said that, ultimately, it is up to general manager Joe Hortiz to get a deal done if the Chargers plan to do so.</p><p>“Jim Harbaugh said that Keenan Allen’s workout went well. Said Allen did ‘Keenan Allen things’ and is hopeful that a deal gets done but leaving that up to GM Joe Hortiz and Allen’s representation.”</p><p>Allen played the first 11 seasons of his NFL career <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-keenan-allen-la-reunion-has-mutual-interest">with the Chargers</a>. He was a part of the franchise when it was still located in San Diego. The front office elected to trade the six-time Pro Bowler to the Chicago Bears after hiring Jim Harbaugh as head coach.</p><p>Keenan Allen served as a top pass option in Chicago in the 2024-25 campaign. However, it was a bit of a down year in terms of yardage, but his touchdowns were on par with Caleb Williams throwing him the ball. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero revealed Allen <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1951367586098069928" rel="noopener">visited his former team on Friday</a>.</p><p>The franchise boldly traded away Allen before the 2024 season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/chicago-bears/bears-news-acquire-keenan-allen-from-chargers-potential-caleb-williams-weapon">Allen landed with the Chicago Bears on March 14 </a>— eventually becoming a future target for Caleb Williams.</p><p>But Allen remains out there via NFL Free Agency. Kay Adams of Up and Adams fired off the question: Is James vocal about advocating for Allen to return? The perennial Pro Bowl safety got real about the possibility.</p><p>“I’m focused on ball right now,” James said smiling. “But there’s a lot of respect for Keenan. He’s one of the guys I looked to. He was one of the O.G. Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported multiple <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1948048511045390846" rel="noopener">teams have expressed interest in Allen</a> as of July 23.</p><p>Allen walks into a younger WR room but one filled with high intrigue if brought back.</p><p>Ladd McConkey immediately rose as the leading receiver during his rookie year. The second rounder caught 82 passes, 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns.</p><p>Jim Harbaugh and the Bolts boosted the room during the 2025 NFL Draft, though. Tre Harris arrives as the Chargers’ newest second round find. Plus starred in the Southeastern Conference just like the former Georgia Bulldog McConkey. Harris comes over via Ole Miss.</p><p>Allen is familiar with third-year wideout Quentin Johnston. Both teamed together for the 2023 campaign. Allen obviously knows the starting quarterback well — having caught passes from Justin Herbert from 2020 to 2023. Since his rookie year in 2013, the star receiver has earned his respect with his elite route running and ability to create separation from defenders. Allen dealt with injuries for some of his career, and if he hadn’t, who knows what his numbers would look like. No. 13 has many Chargers records and is beloved by the fan base.</p><p>Last offseason, as Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz became the new head coach and general manager, the Bolts decided to trade Allen as he did not want to take a pay cut. Allen was dealt to the Chicago Bears for a fourth-round pick. After one season in Chicago, Allen is now a free agent. Allen is 33 years of age and still has a lot left in the gas tank.</p><p>Would the veteran be a good fit back in Greg Roman’s offense? Yes. Allen has been an elite run blocker for his entire career. That was one of the many reasons why he stayed on the field early in his career. However, the Chargers’ current depth chart at receiver features a ton of young talent that is ready to make an impact. The star receiver has a great relationship with Justin Herbert.</p><p>Ladd McConkey, Tre Harris, Quinten Johnston, and DeAndre Lambert-Smith are the top-four guys on the depth chart. Allen was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2013 and helped the Bolts win a playoff game in his rookie season. He went on to have a stellar career with the Chargers and played with the Chicago Bears last season. Now, as a free agent, Allen is aiming to empty the gas tank with one final team. At 33 years old, Father Time will start to take over.</p><p>Jordan Schultz posted on Wednesday that there are several teams that are <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1948048511045390846" rel="noopener">interested in signing the veteran</a>.</p><p>“Free agent WR Keenan Allen, one of the top remaining players on the market, has drawn interest from multiple teams in recent weeks. My understanding is he’s been waiting for training camps to open to better assess the landscape and get a clearer picture of each team’s wide receiver situation.”</p><p>A player his age waiting for training camp to begin is a smart move. Allen prioritizes his health and will make sure he is good to go when the time comes.</p><p>It’s unclear right now who those teams are that are interested in Allen. A couple of months ago, I wrote the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/ranking-best-keenan-allen-fits-late-in-2025-nfl-free-agency">best fits for Keenan Allen</a> as free agency was going on. Some of these teams could really benefit from having Allen a part of their core.</p><p>The Arizona Cardinals make a ton of sense. Allen could join Marvin Harrison Jr. and help form him into one of the best route runners in the league. Allen has been known for his elite route running since he joined the league in 2013. That elite skill set has kept Allen on the field for a majority of his career, and it’s been a major reason why he has a ton of records with the Chargers.</p><p>Allen should not rush his decision, but he doesn’t have much longer to find a team and get situated.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After being traded to the Chicago Bears from the Chargers ahead of last season, the six-time Pro Bowler is now a free agent.</p><p>During his time with the Chargers, Allen broke numerous team records and established himself as one of the best route runners in the league. His last season with the Bolts was arguably his best one. In 2023, Allen <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/15818/keenan-allen" rel="noopener">caught a career-high 108</a> passes and had 1,243 yards for seven touchdowns. He even threw a TD to Mike Williams early on in the season.</p><p>In his lone season in Chicago, Allen did not have the season he had hoped for. He caught just 70 passes for 744 yards, but did score seven times, matching the second most in a season for his career.</p><p>At age 33, the Cal Berkeley product doesn’t have many prime seasons left. He is still very valuable as a pass catcher, with experience and the ability to separate.</p><p>Teams can benefit from signing the veteran receiver.</p><p>With all this in mind, let’s take a look at who the best fits are for Keenan Allen, as we are getting late in free agency.</p><h2><b>Ranking the Best Keenan Allen Fits for 2025</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Ranking-the-Best-Keenan-Allen-Fits-for-2025.jpg"><figcaption>Credit: Daniel Bartel</figcaption></figure><h2><b>4. Los Angeles Chargers</b></h2><p>The Chargers have been rumored to be a team that could potentially bring back Allen. I don’t expect it to happen, but the Bolts are a team that Allen <a href="https://boltbeat.com/bears-keenan-allen-once-again-shows-he-wants-a-chargers-reunion#:~:text=Allen's%20production%20dipped%20with%20the,or%20Los%20Angeles%20next%20season." rel="noopener">said he would play for again</a>. Allen and Justin Herbert would pick up right where they left off. Allen is one of the best receivers in team history, and there is no question the team would bring him back for the right price in the right situation.</p><p>LA recently drafted Tre Harris from Ole Miss, and he looks to insert his name into the top of the depth chart. With Mike Williams back, alongside Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston, there doesn’t seem to be much room for Allen. The Bolts getting Harris might have closed that door altogether.</p><p>Head coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-jim-harbaugh-breaks-silence-possible-keenan-allen-reunion">Jim Harbaugh did say, “Anything is possible,</a>” regarding the situation.</p><h2><b>3. Chicago Bears</b></h2><p>The Bears are in a similar position to the Chargers in terms of recently drafting a receiver to fill the void. They drafted Luther Burden III out of Missouri, and he should shine right away. Playing next to DJ Moore and Rome Odunze, Caleb Williams should have plenty of options at receiver. Not to mention, the Bears also drafted Colston Loveland to pair next to Cole Kmet. The offense is loaded.</p><p>If <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/chicago-bears/bears-rumors-chicago-hint-keenan-allens-departure">Allen was going to return to the Bears</a>, he probably would have done it by now. That door is closing.</p><h2><b>2.  Arizona Cardinals</b></h2><p>The Cardinals make sense for Allen’s skill set. He’ll be able to mentor Harrison Jr. and help shape him into a great route-running receiver.</p><p>An ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45161231/2025-nfl-best-team-fits-remaining-free-agents-trades" rel="noopener">article from Matt Bowen</a> recently mentioned that the Arizona Cardinals are Bowen’s best fit as a team to sign Allen’s services. The Cardinals, led by Kyler Murray, are a team on the rise in the NFC West. They showcased last season that they are a threat to make the postseason and just barely missed out. With Allen there, he, alongside <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/arizona-cardinals/cardinals-news-marvin-harrison-jr-sophomore-season">Marvin Harrison Jr.</a>, Trey McBride, and Michael Wilson, could be lethal. The Cardinals need a receiver, and Allen certainly boosts their offense and receiving core.</p><h2><b>1. Buffalo Bills</b></h2><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/bills-riskiest-move-2025-nfl-offseason">Buffalo Bills</a> come in as my No. 1 landing spot for Allen. The Allen-Allen duo would be a fun one to watch. Reigning 2024 MVP, Josh Allen, could use a receiver of Allen’s caliber. The Bills don’t have a deep receiver list, and Allen could be outside alongside Keon Coleman and Khalil Shakir. Keenan Allen’s former teammates, Josh Palmer and Joey Bosa, signed with the Bills earlier in the offseason.</p><p>One reason this would be a great fit is because the Bills need a veteran receiver to pair with Allen. After trading for Amari Cooper last season, he is likely not going to return to the team. That did not seem like a good fit. Allen could fill a similar role that Stefon Diggs did during his Bills’ tenure. Allen is only two years older than Diggs but still has plenty left in the tank.</p><p>Another big reason why Allen should sign with the Bills is that he will have the chance to play for a Super Bowl contender. Allen only won two playoff games with the Chargers, and one was during his rookie season in 2013. Josh Allen and Keenan Allen would be a dynamic duo and the signing could help them get over the hump, and defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs. However, one move that may not be in the cards is a reunion with veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen.</p><p>The Bears picked up Allen in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers last offseason, and he ended up catching 70 passes for 744 yards and seven touchdowns. He took a backseat to other weapons in the offense at times, though, with D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze getting bigger roles than him as the season went on. Allen has been linked to a reunion with the Chargers in free agency, and fans were quick to note that the Bears <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/chargers/bears-hint-keenan-allen-returning-chargers" rel="noopener">gave away his No. 13 jersey</a> to wide receiver Maurice Alexander.</p><p>“Those Bears listed the 2025 roster and tucked into the massive wealth of information there is a notable little detail—wide receiver Maurice Alexander has been assigned the No. 13.
