Is Pickett just a checkdown artist, a suggestion to fans since his debut against the Ravens? Or were there mitigating circumstances that left Pickett unable to get the ball down the field? Asked this question after the Eagles game by reporters, Pickett let it be known that he simply took what was given to him, with the Ravens and Patriots <a href="https://www.patriots.com/news/philadelphia-eagles-postgame-quotes-8-15" rel="noopener">looking to limit down-the-field shots</a> with their defensive looks.</p><p>Is Pickett on the money? Did the Patriots and Ravens simply take away his chances to go deep to receivers like John Ross, Johnny Wilson, Joseph Ngata, and Ainias Smith? Or does the Pitt product simply have more conservative tendencies than Tanner McKee or Jalen Hurts, the man he will be backing up this fall? With Hurts not playing, the two other signal-callers played in the 14-13 win over the New England Patriots as Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni gives his thoughts on if there is a competition for the backup spot.</p><p>Pickett started the game Thursday as he completed 11 of his 13 pass attempts for 67 yards on top of also being sacked four times while on the other hand, McKee threw for 140 yards, completing 15 of 19 passes. Obviously, this resulted in the media to ask Sirianni about if there is a chance McKee overtakes Pickett of the backup spot, <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/eagles-nick-sirianni-kenny-pickett-is-our-no-2-qb" rel="noopener">but the head coach would be straight-forward with his answer</a> according to NFL.com.</p><p>“You saw where they went in today. Kenny is No. 2 and Tanner is our No. 3, and I am really happy they’re both on the roster,” Sirianni said.</p><h2><b>Nick Sirianni liked what he saw from Eagles quarterbacks</b></h2><p>It has been widely <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/eagles-nick-sirianni-shouts-out-kenny-pickett-for-strong-outing-vs-ravens">believed that Pickett will be the backup to Hurts</a> as he does have a few years of experience starting in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers since he was a former first round pick. As for McKee, he was drafted by Philadelphia in 2023 in the sixth round so there is some familiarity, but Sirianni would credit both for their outings in the win over the Patriots.</p><p>“I thought they both did some good things today,” Sirianni said. “I think, you know, Kenny was what, 11 of 13? Ball only hit the ground twice. He had some pressure on him. Tanner played well. I think he was 15 of 19 today, but made some good throws. I thought Will did some good things. I’m happy they’re all on the roster right now. I really am. That’s good room and they’re all helping Jalen, helping each other, and I love that. So really is a good room.”</p><p>“Like I said, the things that kind of stalled some of the drives in the first half today was some of the pressures we got,” Sirianni continued. “And we didn’t run it great in that area either for some different reasons that we’ll obviously look at and why. So no, I thought they both played a solid game tonight. Just some of the pressure that was on Kenny happened in that first half.”</p><h2><b>Sirianni saw positives in quarterbacks</b></h2><p>Quarterback Will Grier also got some time after McKee as while there will be a discussion of the depth chart, Sirianni expressed how glad he feels to have talent at the position.</p><p>“Again, like I said, I think they’re both doing a nice job,” Sirianni said. “Yeah, Tanner made some really nice throws down the field today with some good anticipation. They both I thought played solid today. I’ll have to watch the tape to see exactly what happened. Hard to say exactly — I don’t remember any plays that I felt like Kenny made and I’m like, oh, man this was detrimental. Obviously you go back, or even with Tanner. I didn’t have any of those notes down like that. There is not supposed to be much uncertainty on the depth chart. Kenny Pickett surely did not expect there to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/eagles-news-kenny-pickett-losing-qb-joj">questions regarding his status</a> as the team’s backup quarterback. Though, fans are taking notice of third-stringer Tanner McKee following an impressive outing in Philly’s 14-13 win over the New England Patriots.</p><p>Pickett displayed near-perfect accuracy, completing 11 of his 13 pass attempts, but he managed only 5.2 yards per pass, Conversely, McKee was 15-of-19 for 140 yards (7.4 yards per pass) and led the Eagles down the field for a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. He connected with Ainias Smith for what proved to be the difference-making two-point conversion.</p><p>The successful effort has people talking, but it is not persuading head coach Nick Sirianni to deviate from his plan. He is <a href="https://x.com/ZBerm/status/1824290776139829607">publicly voicing his support</a> for Pickett.</p><p>“You saw where they went in today,” Sirianni said postgame, per reporter Zach Berman. “Kenny’s our No. 2, Tanner’s our No. 3, and I’m happy both guys are on the roster.”</p><h2><b>Does Eagles QB Kenny Pickett have to worry about losing his job?</b></h2><p>The fourth-year HC is sticking with the status quo for now. One night is not going to cause a shift in his QB room. People cannot forget that McKee struggled immensely in the week one preseason win against the Baltimore Ravens (6-of-16 for 39 yards). Though, fans are also closely keeping track of Pickett’s performances, both of which have been extremely underwhelming.</p><p>The former first-round pick is failing to advance the ball much and is showcasing the same limited skill set that Steeler Nations knows all too well. Playing behind reserves while the Patriots rolled out their starters early in Thursday’s game probably explains some of the shortcomings, and possibly the gap between him and McKee. Nevertheless, Kenny Pickett is expected to give his team more at this point of his carer.</p><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/eagles-news-kenny-pickett-fires-back-negative-narratives-about-change-steelers-exit">Pittsburgh deciding to move on</a> from him after two years and Tanner McKee increasing his stock, the offseason trade acquisition is in danger of reaching new lows. Although he will not supplant Jalen Hurts as the starting quarterback, this is a prime opportunity for Pickett to curry favor with NFL executives. The 26-year-old can still reignite his career in Philly, but he has to provide teams with evidence of clear improvement.</p><p>That has definitely not been the case through the first two preseason matchups. However, the change of scenery didn’t stop Kenny Pickett’s NFL journey from encountering yet another hurdle… this one in the form of second-year quarterback Tanner McKee,  <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/eagles-news-kenny-pickett-losing-qb-joj">got 2nd team reps over Pickett</a> recently, prompting Eagles fans to wonder whether Pickett was losing his grip on the back-up job.</p><p>Fortunately for Kenny Pickett, his performance during Friday’s night’s preseason opener versus the Baltimore Ravens was likely enough to hold off the former 6th Round pick, at least for the time being. Pickett got the start for the Eagles and led Philadelphia on a 15-play 1st quarter drive that ate up over 8 minutes of clock and concluded with a touchdown. Pickett played into the 3rd quarter before handing the reigns to McKee, who completed 6-of-16 pass attempts for just 39 yards to secure the 16-13 win.</p><p>After the game, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni was complimentary of both of his quarterbacks, noting, “I thought they were both in complete control while they were in, and made some big throws.” But Sirianni singled out Pickett specifically, identifying that penalties stalled what could’ve been successful possessions when he was out there.</p><p>“We were <a href="https://www.delawareonline.com/story/sports/nfl/eagles/2024/08/10/eagles-vs-ravens-overreactions-concern-jalen-hurts-kenny-pickett-quinyon-mitchell-nfl-preseason/74677968007/" rel="noopener">moving the ball nicely</a> when Kenny was in,” Sirianni said after the game, according to Martin Frank of Delaware Online. “It was not his fault that there were a couple of penalties that stalled drives that weren’t necessarily him.”</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Kenny-Pickett-drops-back-to-pass-1024x576.jpg"><figcaption>© Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><h2><b>What’s next for Kenny Pickett in Philadelphia? </b></h2><p>So long as Kenny Pickett can hold off Tanner McKee for the remainder of the preseason, he’ll be relegated to back-up duties behind Jalen Hurts, which means he’ll only see the field in blowouts or <i>if </i>Hurts ever goes down with an injury… not at all far-fetched, considering how often Hurts runs the ball — over the last three seasons, Jalen Hurts’ 461 rushing attempts are <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/most-rushing-attempts-by-a-qb-in-last-3-years" rel="noopener">the most, by far</a>, among quarterbacks, as are his 38 rushing touchdowns.</p><p>If Pickett is thrust into a relief role for the Eagles, then fans in Philly can at least take some comfort in knowing that their back-up QB has a winning record over his 24 career starts in the NFL. Although Pickett’s touchdown (17) to turnover (14) differential is not exactly ideal, his 14-10 record indicates that with organizational stability and talent around him, Pickett is perfectly capable of at least keeping the ship afloat.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It’s just jokes, right? But Wilson may have taken a shot at Kenny Pickett’s small hands in speaking of his “big hands.” Wilson said he was blessed, and we can’t blame an NFL quarterback for having hubris.</p><p>Pickett, the Steelers’ 2022 first-round pick, was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-mike-tomlin-drops-truth-bomb-kenny-pickett-trade">traded to the Philadelphia Eagles</a> for draft picks. While no longer in the organization, Wilson <a href="https://x.com/CassidyWoodTV/status/1821558024747557280" rel="noopener">might’ve thrown some shade</a> Pickett’s way on his way out the door, via Cassidy Wood of KDKA.</p><p>“God gives you a gift to throw a ball,” Wilson said. “He gave me big hands to throw it.”</p><p>Throughout the draft process and into his NFL career, Pickett was <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/33412899/qb-kenny-pickett-registers-8-1-2-inch-hand-measurement-nfl-combine" rel="noopener">criticized for his hand size</a>. While he didn’t direct call out his former quarterback, Wilson’s “hands” line <a href="https://x.com/AricMatney/status/1821605878124179461" rel="noopener">had many fans wondering</a> if he was calling out Pickett.</p><p>Are NFL players really waiting for the microphone so they can take potshots at other players? Maybe we need some hip-hop heads to break down these interviews like they dissected the Kendrick Lamar-Drake beef.</p><h2>Russell Wilson vs. Justin Fields remains the real controversy at Steelers training camp</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Did-Russell-Wilson-take-jab-at-Kenny-Pickett-with-hands-comment.jpg"><figcaption>© Barry Reeger-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The tricky <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-mike-tomlin-embracing-media-storm-from-russell-wilson-justin-fields-qb-battle">evaluation between Wilson and Fields</a> is the parsing of their contrasting styles. Yet, they both have the same underlying issue: holding onto the football for too long.</p><p>Since the NFL has moved into a two-high safety era on defense over the last several years, quarterbacks who could extend plays, get out of the pocket, and attack downfield have had some setbacks. Even Patrick Mahomes pivoted in a big way last year, averaging just 3.5 air yards per attempt (AIR/A). That means the ball traveled just 3.5 yards before being caught on average. Remember John Madden playfully teasing quarterbacks about dinking and dunking? That’s the NFL.</p><p>Wilson was never a dink-and-dunk quarterback. In 2018, he led the league with 5.2 AIR/A. In 2017, he finished second (4.7 AIR/A) and tied for second in 2016 (4.9 AIR/A). While 1.5 fewer yards per attempt may not sound like much, it represents a paradigm shift in how offenses operate. This change has left quarterbacks like Wilson to flounder.</p><p>Fields, on the other hand, even if he holds onto the ball like Wilson, has the youth, speed and escapability to extend plays and run for first downs.
