And early on in the contest, especially, they did it mostly without rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman. After the game, head coach Sean McDermott <a href="https://x.com/JoeBuscaglia/status/1838416324633981236" rel="noopener">explained why</a>.</p><p>“Bills HC Sean McDermott said they sat rookie WR Keon Coleman in the first quarter due to an issue of being on time,” Joe Buscaglia, The Athletic’s Bills beat reporter tweeted after the game.</p><p>While the Bills head coach didn’t get into details, Syracuse.com beat reporter Matt Parrino clarified that Coleman’s timeliness issues weren’t from gameday, reporting that “Coleman’s benching wasn’t an issue of being late today.”</p><p>Despite his issues with time management, Coleman did perform well when he finally got in the game. He only had one reception for 24 yards, but that catch went for his first NFL touchdown. The personable wide receiver celebrated in true Keon Coleman fashion, throwing the ball, dancing, and then seeming to quickly realize that he just threw his first-ever NFL TD ball and running after it to rescue the ball.</p><p>That score made the game 20-3, and gave the Bills a lead the Jaguars would never come close to as the rest of the Week 3 game played out.</p><h2><b>Keon Coleman and the 2024 rookie WR class</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Keon-Coleman-1.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>After his one-catch, one-touchdown performance in the Bills Week 3 win over the Jaguars, Keon Coleman now has five catches for 75 yards and a touchdown through three games. While those numbers are excellent for a first-year pass-catcher, there are rookie WRs balling out all over the NFL right now, especially in Week 3.</p><p>The first WR off the board in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinal’s Marvin Harrison Jr., has 10 catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns. New York Giants wideout Malik Nabers has 23 grabs for 271 yards and three touchdowns while Rome Odunze has nine for 156 and a score.</p><p>Before taking Coleman with the first pick of the second round, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/biggest-bills-2024-nfl-draft-mistakes">Bills traded down twice</a> and both teams took a wide receiver (named Xavier, ironically) with the pick. The Kansas City Cheifs took Xavier Worthy who has six catches for 81 yards, five rushes for 39 yards, and a touchdown each way. Xavier Legette, who the Carolina Panthers took at No. 32, has six catches for 77 yards and is yet to find the end zone.</p><p>While there is still a long way to go in the 2024 season and even longer in these pass-catchers careers, it seems like this past draft may be remembered for its stellar WR class.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/texans-news-houston-acquires-stefon-diggs-blockbuster-bills-trade">traded four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans</a> in the offseason. Buffalo also lost Gabe Davis to the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-buffalo-finds-stefon-diggs-replacement-in-keon-coleman-nfl-draft">Bills believe they found a replacement for Diggs</a> when they selected Coleman 33rd overall in the 2024 draft.</p><p>While the team has high expectations for Coleman on the field, the rookie receiver has already won over teammates with his unique personality. “He’s just <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41220066/duality-buffalo-bills-rookie-wr-keon-coleman" rel="noopener">not normal</a>. And I mean that in the best way… He does things his way and he’s always him. He’s very authentic… I love the guy,” Bills quarterback Josh Allen said, per ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg.</p><p>Allen was specifically referring to the time Coleman came to the QB’s home for dinner and refused to eat the fish that was being served. The young wideout wasn’t interested in impressing the star quarterback and that uncompromising attitude left a positive impression, per Getzenberg.</p><h2><b>Bills rookie WR Keon Coleman impressed Josh Allen with authenticity</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Keon-Coleman_78963c.jpg"><figcaption>Mark Konezny-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>For his part, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-josh-allen-keeps-real-missing-stefon-diggs">Allen admitted to missing Diggs</a> during training camp after playing for four seasons with the wideout. But it’s clear the Bills feel they have a future star in Coleman. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-josh-allen-gave-keon-coleman-an-eye-opening-comparison-to-2-former-all-pros">Allen compared the young receiver to former All-Pros</a> Michael Thomas and Dez Bryant. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-josh-allen-dishes-on-keon-colemans-underestimated-ability">Coleman has also impressed with his underestimated ability</a> to win routes with short-game quickness.</p><p>During his college days, Coleman played two seasons with the Michigan State Spartans. In 2022 he had 58 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns. After a successful sophomore season, Coleman transferred to Florida State. He caught 50 passes for 658 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Seminoles in 2023. The performance earned Coleman First-Team All-ACC honors.</p><p>The Bills selected the receiver with the first pick of the second round of the 2024 draft. Coleman is part of a near-total rebuild of Buffalo’s wide receiver room. The team lost Diggs and Davis but added Curtis Samuel, Mack Hollins and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in addition to drafting Coleman. Third-year wideout Khalil Shakir returned to the Bills for the 2024 season.</p><p>Coleman impressed in his first NFL action. The rookie hauled in four passes on five targets for 51 yards. He also made an impressive contested catch on the sideline in the fourth quarter of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/arizona-cardinals-most-to-blame-for-week-1-loss-to-bills">Bills’ 34-28 Week One win over the Arizona Cardinals</a>.</p><p>Buffalo travels to Miami to play the Dolphins on Thursday night. Like Worthy, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-keon-coleman-reveals-josh-allens-draft-day-message">Coleman is coming</a> to a roster this offseason ready to contend for a Super Bowl. But in <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/football-is-so-back-josh-allen-visits-scoop-city/id1756145167?i=1000668583988" rel="noopener">a recent appearance</a> on the <i>Scoop City Podcast</i>, Bills quarterback Josh Allen wanted to temper immediate expectations about his rookie wideout. However, Allen also dropped a nugget that should excite Buffalo fans for the duo this upcoming season.</p><p>“I think he’s got a lot of short-game quickness,” said Allen about Coleman. “I think people underestimate that about him. When we go one-on-one, he could play the slot, he could play outside, and his releases are pretty dang good. He’s strong at the point of catch. So again, it’s going to be an adjustment period; it isn’t going to be perfect right away, but we’re going to keep working and continue to get better. I’m very excited to see what we’ve seen out of him in training camp so far, and hopefully, we have a long time together.”</p><p>The rookie will have to adjust to life at the professional level, but Allen and the Bills will gamble on Coleman’s upside for their offense. Coleman’s skillset is needed, especially after Stefon Diggs’ and Gabe Davis’s departures. While he might not have an NFL debut like Worthy did, Coleman should be a stud in Buffalo this season.</p><h2><b>What to expect of Bills rookie Keon Coleman this season</b></h2><p> </p><p>Coleman was an end-zone magnet last season, hauling in 50 catches, 658 yards, and 11 touchdowns with Florida State. Those stats with the Seminoles earned him first-team All-ACC honors. He also took home third-team All-Big Ten status in 2022, recording 58 receptions, 798 yards, and seven scores while with Michigan State.</p><p>However, Coleman <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/keon-coleman/3200434f-4c29-5571-54fa-77236b775ae1" rel="noopener">isn’t a wholly refined prospect</a> yet via NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein.</p><p>“Coleman has excellent size and ball skills,” said Zierlein. “He’s not sudden and doesn’t have great speed, so beating press and creating breathing room against tight man coverages will depend on his ability to improve as a route-runner.”</p><p>This is typical for taller receivers, as their longer strides usually result in less explosion and quickness. Coleman’s route-running, though, can be worked on over time. This is a common issue for younger receivers, and it’s a skill that comes with reps and experience. That might mean Coleman isn’t a perfect replacement for Diggs. However, Coleman still has the potential to become a big-bodied safety blanket that can be trusted with jump balls.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Buffalo is set to make another deep playoff run in 2024. They will need all the help they can get, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-weapon-developing-josh-allens-3rd-down-target">including contributions from key rookies</a> like Keon Coleman, if they are ever going to get past the Chiefs in the playoffs.</p><p>Josh Allen <a href="https://youtu.be/GDuB421909g?t=1322" rel="noopener">recently appeared on an episode</a> of The Green Light Podcast with Chris Long. Allen said he saw Dez Bryant and Michael Thomas in Keon Coleman when he watched his college highlights.</p><p>“When he was going through his college tape I thought he was kind of a mix between like a Michael Thomas and a Dez Bryant,” Josh Allen said. “Obviously a big guy, great body control, and I think Dez and Michael Thomas have that great body control and I think he’s up there with them. I think he’s the best body control that I’ve seen, in terms of running to the right, jumping off his right, and getting left and then running left side jumping off his left and getting right. And I think that’s his basketball background but again he’s 6’4, I think he plays faster than what his 40 times says. I know everybody knocks him for that, but you know he’s a gamer too, and he loves the game of football so um I’m excited to throw to him.”</p><p>Josh Allen needs Keon Coleman to replace Stefon Diggs in the Bills offense. Although Diggs was nowhere near the size of Coleman at 6’4 vs. 6’0. Coleman’s size could unlock new possibilities for Buffalo’s offense.</p><p>Coleman’s perceived lack of speed (4.61 40-yard dash)  is what caused him to tumble down draft boards. However, Coleman has already proved that he has quick burst off the line of scrimmage. Buffalo lost to Chicago 33-6 in a heavily one-sided game.</p><p>After the game, McDermott <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40813611/got-lot-work-do" rel="noopener">was clear on what went wrong</a>.</p><p>“We didn’t control the line of scrimmage from the jump, all the way down to one of the last series we had on offense, trying to get a first down on third-and-1 … and can’t get a yard,” McDermott shared via ESPN.</p><p>McDermott emphasized that getting challenged is good in the preseason. It just can’t continue into the regular season.</p><p>“That’s where the challenge comes in. We’ve got to embrace that challenge. We’ve got a lot of work to do,” McDermott added.</p><p>McDermott also made it clear that the team did not live up to his expectations in the devastating preseason loss.</p><p>“I don’t care who we play, where we play, or what time the game is. There is a standard of play when you put the Buffalo Bills colors on,” McDermott stated with evident frustration.</p><p>Here’s hoping that the Bills can rebound in their next preseason matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
