Instead, they stumbled into one of the most shocking collapses of the NFL’s opening weekend. Up by 15 points in the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills, John Harbaugh’s team let the game slip away in agonizing fashion. The result was a reminder that even veteran-heavy teams can falter when execution breaks down at critical moments.</p><h2><b>Recapping the Ravens’ heartbreaking loss</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Ravens-quarterback-Lamar-Jackson.jpg"><figcaption>Tina MacIntyre-Yee/Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Ravens were part of one of Week 1’s most thrilling games, but it ended in crushing fashion. Despite holding a two-score lead in the final period, <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401772918">they fell 41-40</a> to the Bills in a collapse that will sting for weeks. Sure, blame can be shared across the roster. However, the defense bore the brunt after allowing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/bills-news-josh-allen-passes-thurman-thomas-record-books">Josh Allen to pick them apart</a> in the closing minutes.</p><p>Baltimore looked ready to run the Bills out of Highmark Stadium. That said, a costly fumble and defensive lapses flipped the script. Superstar RB Derrick Henry piled up nearly 200 total yards and two touchdowns. Sadly, he lost the ball late when Ed Oliver punched it free. Buffalo recovered with just minutes remaining, setting up the game-winning field goal at the buzzer. What should have been a statement victory instead turned into a heartbreaking defeat.</p><p>Here we’ll try to look at and discuss the Baltimore Ravens personnel most to blame for close Week 1 loss to Bills.</p><h2><b>Henry’s fumble overshadows otherwise dominant night</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/ravens-news-derrick-henry-past-jim-brown-nfl-list">A vintage King Henry performance</a> should have been the story. He bulldozed Buffalo’s front seven, piling up more than 160 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. That included a long 49-yard sprint that looked like the knockout blow. For three and a half quarters, Henry reminded the league why he remains one of the NFL’s most feared runners.</p><p>That said, football is a game of moments. Unfortunately, Henry’s defining one last Sunday was a costly fumble with three minutes left. Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver got his hand in, and Buffalo recovered in prime position to mount their comeback. The turnover swung all momentum away from Baltimore. Yes, Henry’s total impact can’t be ignored. Still, his late mistake overshadowed his brilliance and proved to be the hinge point of the collapse.</p><p>Baltimore’s other backs didn’t help either. Justice Hill coughed up the ball on a bizarre 15-yard loss earlier in the game, while Rasheen Ali had just a single carry. Keaton Mitchell being inactive only underscored how thin the Ravens’ options were beyond Henry. The entire position group has to shoulder some responsibility for a loss that should have been sealed well before Buffalo got the ball back.</p><h2><b>Special teams lapses put Ravens on their heels</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/ravens-news-derrick-henry-owns-fumble-bills-game">If Henry’s fumble was the dagger</a>, Baltimore’s special teams mistakes kept the door cracked open all night. Outside of kicker Tyler Loop, this unit was a glaring liability. Bills return man Brandon Codrington had five returns for 139 yards. Ty Johnson added another 54 yards on just two attempts.</p><p>Time and again, the Ravens’ coverage units failed to contain Buffalo’s speed and discipline. Missed tackles, poor lane assignments, and inconsistent pursuit meant Allen often started drives near midfield instead of deep in his own territory. Against an elite quarterback, those hidden yards matter. Special teams are often overlooked, but in this case, Baltimore’s sloppiness proved costly.</p><h2><b>Trenton Simpson and linebackers fail to close the game</b></h2><p>Roquan Smith delivered his usual production with 10 tackles, but even he wasn’t immune to breakdowns. His missed tackle on James Cook’s 51-yard catch-and-run epitomized Baltimore’s struggles late in the game. What was once a tightly sealed middle of the field opened up when it mattered most.</p><p>Trenton Simpson, meanwhile, had an underwhelming showing. Splitting snaps with Teddye Buchanan, Simpson recorded just a single tackle. He also lacked the sideline-to-sideline impact the Ravens desperately needed. Buchanan’s energy and tackling stood out more, even with fewer opportunities. This linebacker corps showed its inability to finish plays and control the game in crunch time.</p><h2><b>Jaire Alexander struggles on the big stage</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/780647231-keon-coleman-ravens-bills.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Ravens’ secondary was billed as one of the NFL’s deepest and most talented units heading into 2025. He was beaten multiple times in coverage and committed a costly pass interference penalty.</p><p>On the game’s final drive, Alexander was victimized by Keon Coleman. The latter hauled in a critical completion to set up Buffalo’s game-winning field goal. Alexander’s night was defined by being a step behind. For a player with his reputation, it was an alarming way to open the season.</p><h2><b>Final thoughts</b></h2><p>The Ravens’ Week 1 loss wasn’t the result of a single failure. It was the product of multiple breakdowns across units. Henry’s late fumble was the turning point, but special teams errors, linebacker lapses, and cornerback miscues all contributed to the unraveling. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, blowing a 15-point fourth-quarter lead is unacceptable. Week 1 saw Justin Fields light up the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-aaron-rodgers-feat-since-2020">New York’s defense allowed four touchdowns to Aaron Rodgers</a>. Later on, Josh Allen led a remarkable comeback to get Buffalo to 1-0 on the season. Before the Bills and Jets square off, we have the bold predictions ready for the matchup.</p><p>Last year, the Bills swept the Jets, winning 23-20 at MetLife Stadium and 40-14 at Highmark Stadium. But now, there is a new-look New York coaching staff and a different quarterback. Will Fields make the difference in this rivalry? Or will Allen keep dominating the AFC East like he has in recent years?</p><p>Before the Jets and Bills square off, we have the bold predictions ready to go.</p><h2><b>Josh Allen dominates through the air</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Josh-Allen-with-Buffalo-Bills-12.jpg"><figcaption>Tina MacIntyre-Yee/Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>On Sunday, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/bills-news-josh-allen-calls-fans-left-stadium-epic-comeback">Bills were down 40-25 before they were able to come back and steal the win from the Baltimore Ravens</a>. Allen was able to sling the ball around, finding Keon Coleman and Khalil Shakir for big completions down the stretch. Many of the big completions came against Jaire Alexander, who struggled in the cornerback 2 role. He will find Brandon Stephens and undress him for at least 350 passing yards.</p><p>The Jets have one of the top cornerbacks in the league in Sauce Gardner on their defense. They picked up Stephens on a three-year free-agency deal from the Baltimore Ravens, and his New York debut was dreadful. Stephens allowed five catches and two touchdowns on seven targets in Week 1.</p><p>While the Bills don’t have the elite receivers they did in the past, Allen is an elite passer. Coleman broke out in Week 1, and Shakir has put up solid performances in the past. He will keep that up in Week 2.</p><h2><b>The Jets run for 200 yards</b></h2><p>For the first three quarters of Week 1, the Bills’ run defense was disastrous. Derrick Henry ended the day with 169 yards, while Lamar Jackson scampered for 70. The Jets got 107 yards on the ground from Breece Hall and 47 from Fields, with Isaiah Davis and Braelon Allen bringing the team total to 182. They will improve on that in Week 2, racking up 200 yards.</p><p>The Jets are dead set on running the ball this season. So, if they are going to have any success this year, 200 yards will have to be the norm. Hall had his burst back from before the ACL injury that ended his 2023 campaign, Fields tucked it 12 times, and Allen should have an increased role in the offense.</p><p>Hall is not the runner Henry is, and the same goes for Fields and Jackson. But they can learn a lot from what the Ravens put on tape in Week 1 and run the ball effectively.</p><h2><b>The Bills will win by at least seven points</b></h2><p>The Jets will give the Bills a tough game, just like they did against the Steelers. But there is a significant talent gap between these two rosters, which will end in Buffalo winning by at least seven points. Starting the season 0-2 all but guarantees the Jets will continue their mind-boggling playoff drought. And a 2-0 start would put Buffalo in the driver’s seat for another AFC East title.</p><p>The last time the Jets beat the Bills was in Week 1 of 2023, when Xavier Gipson returned a punt in overtime to win it. That game is most remembered for Aaron Rodgers suffering an Achilles injury on the fourth play of the game.</p><p>According to FanDuel, the Bills <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/football/nfl/buffalo-bills-@-new-york-jets-34662300" rel="noopener">are seven-point favorites</a> and are -320 on the moneyline. Allen’s passing yards over/under is 231.5, while Hall’s rushing yards total is 57.5. The team recently made a move, <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1965774684953456956" rel="noopener">signing a defensive tackle</a> to the practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.</p><p>“The Bills have signed former Commanders second-rounder Phidarian Mathis to their practice squad,” Rapoport wrote on X, formerly Twitter. </p><p>The Commanders drafted Mathis in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He was in the third year of his four-year rookie deal when he was waived in December 2024. Mathis played in 12 games for the Commanders last season and recorded 17 tackles and a pass defended.</p><p>Mathis seems to be a depth piece for the Bills, and if there’s an injury in the starting rotation, there’s a good chance that he could be called up on the active roster. The defensive line had a long night with Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, as the Ravens finished with 238 rushing yards. The Bills were able to get after Jackson, sacking him twice.</p><p>Nonetheless, the Bills were still able to make a miraculous comeback in the fourth quarter as they were down 40-25 at one point. The offense and defense came up big at the right time, and they were able to take the 41-40 win. One player on the team <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZxzVmUROcs&amp;t=188s" rel="noopener">never stopped believing</a>, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/bills-news-dion-dawkins-reveals-josh-allens-message-kept-bills-fighting-ravens">Dion Dawkins said it was Josh Allen</a>.</p><p>“We’re still in it. He just kept saying, ‘We’re still in it.’ And to hear him say that, it keeps our confidence there. He has had a passion for sports his entire life, and enjoys covering and writing about all sports.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Buffalo Bills</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>It’s time to overreact to Week 1 of the NFL season, and a select few fanbases should be planning parades after their teams’ great performances in their season openers.</p><p>There were also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-week-1-losers-ravens-same-old-ravens-better-worse">plenty of losers in Week 1</a>, including poor showings by the Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans and another collapse in the fourth quarter from the Baltimore Ravens.</p><p>However, there were plenty of winners in the opening week as well, including two teams responsible for some of those losers as well as a Friday night quarterback performance that set the tone for the season. Here are the five biggest winners from Week 1.</p><h2><b>Packers announce themselves as Super Bowl contenders</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Micah-Parsons-on-Sept-7-2025.jpg"><figcaption>© Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The NFC felt wide open after the Philadelphia Eagles coming into the preseason, but the Green Bay Packers cemented themselves as the preseason No. 2 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-reasons-micah-parsons-dc-ready-to-run-through-wall">when they traded for Micah Parsons</a> in a massive deal with the Dallas Cowboys.</p><p>The Packers had a chance to show off exactly why they should be taken seriously in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, who finished with the best record in the NFC in the regular season in 2024. They did exactly that, running Detroit out of Lambeau Field in a 27-13 rout that was even more of a blowout than the final score suggests.</p><p>Offensively, the Packers looked like the same balanced machine that they were last season. Matt LaFleur came in with a masterful gameplan, and new Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard was overwhelmed by the creativity and experience that LaFleur brought to the game.</p><p>10 different Packers caught a pass, and nobody in green caught more than two balls. Green Bay also pounded the rock, controlled the clock with Josh Jacobs and didn’t turn the football over to give the Lions any momentum.</p><p>On defense, the Packers were absolutely flying around against a Lions offense that was struggling to find its footing without Ben Johnson. Jared Goff was pressured 16 times on 43 dropbacks, a middle-of-the-pack rate in Week 1, but he never got comfortable on Sunday. Parsons was especially impactful despite playing limited reps in his Packers debut, notching two pressures and a sack.</p><h2><b>Josh Allen is an alien</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/27032040.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Every now and then in sports, we get to watch a great player morph into an unstoppable superhero that puts their foot down and decides that they are not losing that day. Josh Allen did just that on Sunday night with the whole country watching and got the Bills to 1-0 on the season.</p><p>Make no mistake, Allen was still playing an excellent game even while trailing by 15 points with less than five minutes to go. His throw to set up a Matt Prater field goal at the end of the first half is a play that only a handful of players can make, and he still orchestrated a very productive day against a Ravens defense that should end up being very good, no matter how Sunday night looked.</p><p>In the final five minutes, however, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/bills-news-josh-allen-joins-cam-newton-historic-nfl-club-ravens-clash">Allen ascended to a place that very few are capable</a> of getting to. Every dropback felt like it was going to be a success and the Ravens defense felt helpless as he led the Bills down the field again and again. After a touchdown pass to Keon Coleman, aided by a little luck, found its mark, Allen capitalized on a Derrick Henry fumble with one of the throws of the weekend to set up a rushing touchdown to cut the lead to two.</p><p>When <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/ravens-news-john-harbaugh-doubles-down-4th-down-punt-decision-bills">John Harbaugh elected to punt the ball back to Allen and company</a> on fourth down with less than two minutes remaining, there was only one way the game was going to end. Four completions and a scramble later, it was time to send Prater out and celebrate one of the comebacks of the decade in the NFL.</p><h2><b>Justin Herbert puts the discourse to bed (or not)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Chargers-news-Justin-Herbert-does-best-Flash-impression-with-blazing-fast-run-vs.-Chiefs.jpg"><figcaption>Amanda Perobelli/Reuters via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>People who watch the Chargers religiously have been trying to explain this to people who don’t watch the Chargers for more than five years now: Justin Herbert is an incredible football player.</p><p>Admittedly, the Oregon product’s two playoff starts haven’t been pretty. A blown 27-3 lead in Jacksonville and a four-interception game in Houston, both of which he shares some of the blame for, have lowered the Herbert discourse to incredibly irresponsible levels.</p><p>On Friday night in the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, Herbert took all of that personally in prime time. He shredded Steve Spagnuolo and the Chiefs defense to the tune of 25-of-34 for 318 yards and three touchdowns. He also converted some key third downs and stayed ahead of the sticks with his legs, including a massive third-and-14 conversion that essentially ended the game.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-justin-herbert-earns-major-props-veteran-qb">Herbert was masterful all night</a>, not putting the ball in harm’s way even one time while still pushing the ball down the field throughout the night. He was the best player on the field during a game that featured Patrick Mahomes playing very well, showing off what he is capable of when he is at his best.</p><p>The Herbert discourse will descend outside of watching football and into writing narratives when playoff time comes around again, but until then, just enjoy one of the best in the world doing his thing each and every week.</p><h2><b>Steelers-Jets: The good vibes game nobody saw coming</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Aaron-Rodgers-helped-the-Steelers-gain-a-Week-1-victory-over-the-Jets.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Heading into the Sunday slate, Steelers Jets was the fifth game you throw on a laptop outside of your multiview and check in on the score here and there. However, it quickly became the must-see game of the morning, as Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields traded punches to open the 2025 season (it still sounds weird to say).</p><p>Rodgers turned back the clock and the Steelers got some explosive plays after the catch from DK Metcalf in his debut with the team. The veteran quarterback finished the game with four touchdown passes and marched the Pittsburgh offense up and down the field all day.</p><p>Rodgers’ athleticism has dwindled, but he can still get the ball just about anywhere on the field and got the ball out quicker than almost every other quarterback in the NFL in Week 1. It remains to be seen whether that keeps up when he is a little less fresh, but this was a great start either way.</p><p>On the other side, the Jets offense with Fields at the helm was one of the surprises of the weekend. The offensive line looked great even after losing Alijah Vera-Tucker and Fields was an asset in the running game. He wasn’t asked to do a ton as a passer, but he made some nice throws downfield, played on time and didn’t put the ball in harm’s way.</p><p>Overall, this was a nice blueprint for how this Jets offense can have success this season, and it showed in a week where they finished fifth in EPA per play. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-jets/jets-news-justin-fields-start-remarkable-stats">Fields actually finished at the top of the league</a> in EPA per dropback despite facing a 50% pressure rate, according to Next Gen Stats.</p><p>There’s still a world where both of these teams crash and burn over the next 17 weeks. For now, however, let’s enjoy that they gave us one of the most surprisingly entertaining games of the weekend.</p><h2><b>Daniel Jones, Colts destroy the Dolphins</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Colts-quarterback-Daniel-Jones-17-throws.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Colts’ decision to start Daniel Jones over Anthony Richardson got a lot of heat in the preseason, but all of the haters shut their mouths quickly on Sunday. In Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins, Daniel Jones stayed at home and Danny Dimes showed up to get the Colts to 1-0.</p><p>Jones finished with the fifth-best EPA per dropback in the NFL in Week 1, completing 22-of-29 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked just once as the Colts ran away with a dominant 33-8 win over a helpless Dolphins squad.</p><p>Jonathan Taylor and rookie DJ Giddens shared the rushing load in the run-heavy attack under Shane Steichen, and that helped suffocate a Miami defense that had no answers all night long. Defensively, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/dolphins-news-tua-tagovailoa-wild-retort-turnover-allegations">Colts forced three turnovers</a> and held an offense that has a lot of weapons down all day long.</p><p>This type of performance, if Indianapolis can replicate it over the course of the season, gives them a roadmap to competitiveness in an AFC South that doesn’t look overly challenging with the Texans struggling to protect C.J. Stroud once again. Whether Jones and company continue to do that is another story, but the vibes are high in Indy after one game.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, the unsung hero for Sean McDermott’s team was Matt Prater. The 41-year-old kicker scored 11 points in the game, including three on the field goal that won the game for Buffalo.</p><p>Prater was a late addition to the Bills’ practice squad before the season began. However, McDermott called his number in Week 1 and the veteran stepped into the limelight with no hesitation. After going perfect in the game when he got the chance to kick, Prater was the co-savior of the night alongside Allen. The reigning MVP <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/bills-news-matt-prater-josh-allen-ravens-game-meeting-days-ago">heaped praise on Buffalo’s kicker</a> after the game.</p><p>One game was good enough for the kicker to convince the Bills to hand him an official deal. Buffalo announced on its social media page that Prater <a href="https://x.com/BuffaloBillsPR/status/1965509423281103218" rel="noopener">has been signed</a> for the rest of the regular season. He might not have a game as big as the one he did in Week 1. However, having a reliable kicker is one less thing that McDermott has to worry about. It looks like Prater can be that player.</p><p>The Bills entered the season with massive expectations. One week in, it looks like Allen and Buffalo are ready to handle whatever comes their way. If they handle business against the Kansas City Chiefs later in the season, AFC Super Bowl contenders will have to come through Buffalo to get there.</p><p>Allen had a stellar performance, orchestrating the late-game comeback. However, he and the Bills acknowledged how crucial Prater was to the win. Against Baltimore on Sunday, he punted four times for 158 yards with a long of 48 before the team decided to part ways with him after the win. In the preseason opener against Jacksonville, Johnston had two punts for 94 yards, while Waitman’s lone attempt traveled 57 yards. A week later, against Tampa Bay, Johnston recorded three punts for 127 yards, averaging 42.3, while Waitman averaged 58.0 yards on three kicks. In the preseason finale against Carolina, Johnston’s single punt went 33 yards from opposing territory, while Waitman managed just 35 yards from Pittsburgh’s 35-yard line. The competition ended with Waitman winning the job and Johnston being released.</p><p>Johnston had been in the second year of a three-year, $9 million contract with Pittsburgh before his release. He began the 2024 season as the Steelers’ starting punter but suffered a knee injury in Week 1 that ended his season and forced the team to turn to Waitman. Now entering his eighth NFL season, Johnston brings experience from 96 career games with the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans, carrying a 47.3-yard career average with 183 punts placed inside the 20-yard line.
