Under head coach Sean Payton and rookie quarterback Bo Nix, however, they defied expectations. Now, just a few weeks before the 2025 training camp kicks off, the Broncos are not only looking to build on their surprising postseason appearance. They’re also facing some tough decisions. With a deep, newly reinforced defense and a young offense still developing, Denver is a team on the rise. But keeping the core intact won’t come cheap. That’s where the trade block comes into play. One name stands out as the most obvious candidate: defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers.</p><h2><b>Building Around Bo Nix</b></h2><p>The Broncos surprised many by reaching the playoffs in 2024 behind rookie quarterback Bo Nix. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/broncos-news-unit-earns-endorsement-bo-nix-sophomore-season">He overcame early struggles</a> to lead a solid offensive unit. To support his growth, Denver added rookie RB RJ Harvey, WR Pat Bryant, and veteran TE Evan Engram to complement Courtland Sutton and Devaughn Vele.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Bo-Nix_95cc47.jpg"></figure><p>Yet the true strength remains on defense. The Broncos ranked seventh in total defense and third in points allowed. Patrick Surtain II even earned <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/broncos-news-patrick-surtain-ii-father-reacts-cornerback-2024-dpoy-award">Defensive Player of the Year honors</a>. Denver reinforced that unit by signing Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga and drafting DB Jahdae Barron.</p><p>With heavy investment on defense, <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/den">tough roster decisions loom</a>, though. This is especially true regarding standout lineman John Franklin-Myers.</p><h2><b>Franklin-Myers as a Trade Candidate</b></h2><p>Franklin-Myers is entering the final year of his contract and coming off the best season of his career. Yet, despite his value and production, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/broncos-news-60-1-million-star-courtland-sutton-optimistic-contract-extension">he may be the odd man</a> out in Denver’s evolving long-term plans.</p><p>Note that Franklin-Myers was a no-show at organized team activities (OTAs) this offseason. That sparked speculation that a holdout or contract dispute could be brewing. His agent, Cliff Brady, was quick to downplay any rumors, though. Brady clarified that his client simply has a pattern of skipping OTAs and is training independently.</p><p>“JFM hasn’t been to OTAs for a few years now,” Brady said. “No contract issues. He’ll be there for minicamp. He’s currently working his ass off to have the best season of his career.”</p><h2><b>Financial Drama</b></h2><p>Still, even if there’s no drama behind the scenes, the financial picture says plenty. According to Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker, Denver has already invested heavily in the defensive side of the ball. They shelled out $76.5 million combined for Hufanga and Greenlaw. With others like Nik Bonitto also playing on expiring deals, the money may simply not be there for Franklin-Myers.</p><p>Of course, keep in mind that Franklin-Myers led the Broncos with a 17.8 percent pass-rush win rate and earned an impressive 82.9 PFF pass-rushing grade in 2024. His stat sheet backed up those analytics. He had 40 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, seven sacks, and 18 quarterback hits. That kind of production won’t come cheap. That is especially true if it comes with a long-term price tag Denver isn’t prepared to meet.</p><h2><b>The Writing on the Wall</b></h2><p>Franklin-Myers may be valuable, but Denver appears to be preparing for life without him. The Broncos drafted LSU standout Sai’vion Jones in the third round this year. That’s a move that could signal a shift in priorities. If Jones can contribute right away, then Franklin-Myers becomes more of a luxury than a necessity.</p><p>Now, with defensive line talent always in high demand across the league, the Broncos could likely fetch a solid return by shopping Franklin-Myers ahead of the season. Denver could possibly net some draft capital or rotational talent. That kind of proactive asset management is how good teams stay competitive year after year. Letting Franklin-Myers walk for nothing in 2026 would be far worse than cashing in while his stock is high.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Denver-Broncos-defensive-end-John-Franklin-Myers.jpg"><figcaption>© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>A Necessary Sacrifice</b></h2><p>Trading away a productive veteran like Franklin-Myers won’t be easy. It will also not be a popular move in the locker room. Still, for the Broncos to maintain cap flexibility and re-sign other key players, something has to give. Franklin-Myers may not want out, and he may have earned every bit of a new deal. However, from a roster-building standpoint, Denver would be wise to act now rather than wait until the market dictates terms.</p><p>Don’t be surprised if a contender comes calling in late July or early August, especially one looking for an instant-impact pass rusher to complete its defensive front. And don’t be surprised if the Broncos answer the phone.</p><p>John Franklin-Myers is coming off a career year, but he may be a cap casualty in waiting. With a potential replacement already in the building, Denver’s best move might be to sell high before 2025’s kickoff.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His performance helped propel the team to a 10-7 record in a highly competitive division as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-bo-nix-sends-message-after-clinching-playoff-spot">Broncos return to the playoffs</a>, ending an agonizing eight-year drought. While Nix became a sensation in his debut season, Denver’s strong offensive line play deserves a great deal of credit for the team’s success.</p><p>NFL insider Field Yates is a big believer in the Broncos’ offensive line. After a standout 2024 campaign, <a href="https://x.com/ESPNNFL/status/1938713132156821561" rel="noopener">he expects</a> the unit to dominate again in 2025. “The Broncos are about as well positioned as anybody in the entire league at that offensive line spot,” Yates declared, per NFL on ESPN.</p><p>“They were the number one NFL offensive line in not just run-block win rate but also pass-block win rate – and by a lot. They were at 74 percent last year. Only one other team in the league was even above 70,” Yates noted.</p><h2><b>Broncos’ offensive line expected to dominate in 2025</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Broncos-Line.jpg"><figcaption>Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Broncos’ offensive line was the top-ranked unit in football last season. However, there were actually two other teams (the Ravens and the Vikings) that reached at least 70 percent in both run- and pass-block win rate. Still, the Broncos were dominant with a <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/nfl/story/_/id/41040723/2024-nfl-win-rates-top-teams-players-rankings#pbwr" rel="noopener">74 percent</a> win rate in pass blocking and 75 percent on running plays, per ESPN.</p><p>The Broncos invested in the o-line, bringing in right tackle <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-sign-former-49ers-tackle-mike-mcglinchey">Mike McGlinchey on a five-year, $87.5 million contract</a> in 2023. The team added left guard Ben Powers the same year. Denver assembled the rest of the line through the draft, selecting left tackle Garett Bolles in the first round in 2017, right guard Quinn Meinerz in the third round in 2021 and center Luke Wattenberg in the fifth round the following year.</p><p>“They have all five starters expected back this year for that offensive line… To me, a lot of reasons to be optimistic about this Denver team because [they’re strong at] a position that we always find ourselves talking about where teams don’t have enough talent or enough depth,” Yates added.</p><p>All five starters had strong individual seasons as Powers ranked first in run-block win rate among interior lineman and Wattenberg, Meinerz and Powers all placed top-five for interior pass-block win rate. His rookie season put him on the map as one of the top young stars in the game. He led the Broncos to a playoff appearance in his rookie season, and the expectations are through the roof for this franchise.</p><p>Many people have already given him his flowers, while some expect more from the quarterback. Every player goes through criticism, but there wasn’t much Nix did wrong in his rookie season. Considering how well he did last year, even the slightest jump is a big deal for this team. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-denver-named-nfls-most-improved-defense-by-espn-personality">Broncos’ defense is already getting the “most improved”</a> label this offseason.</p><p>Offensive tackle Garett Bolles <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/broncos-lt-garett-bolles-gushes-over-freak-of-nature-bo-nix-after-impressive-rookie-season" rel="noopener">had nothing but great things to say</a> about Nix.</p><p>“Bo’s a tremendous football player,” Bolles said during a Wednesday appearance on NFL Network’s The Insiders. “I’m so grateful I get to protect him and being his blindside protector, giving him all the time in the world. He’s a freak of nature. You look at the numbers that he put up last year, between him and (Jayden) Daniels, those were the two young quarterbacks in the league that’s gonna be very successful, and I have one of them behind me. His demeanor, his composure, his work ethic, just always wanting to get better, his arm talent and just the way he sees it, he has swag, man, he really does.”</p><p>Nix didn’t have many weapons in his rookie year, but was able to make the most of it by making plays himself. When the ball is in his possession, you can expect great things. This is only the beginning for the Broncos for what could be a huge run that could last his entire career. They are led by an elite defense and a young and talented quarterback, which is a recipe for success. ESPN’s Marcus Spears had nothing but <a href="https://x.com/ESPNNFL/status/1937978473672310873" rel="noopener">great praise for the defense</a> on Wednesday’s episode of NFL Live.</p><p>“I think this team is going to make some noise this year,” Spears said. “I know everyone has been talking about them. I absolutely love one move: Dre Greenlaw. For years, you have known how I have felt about Dre Greenlaw. He completely changes how you play football at the second level. And then you get (Talanoa) Hufanga from the San Francisco 49ers as well. The Denver Broncos are something to watch, and I know we get excited about <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-bo-nix-gives-sends-confident-message-learning-sean-payton-offense">Bo Nix and Sean Payton</a>, but that defense, I want to remind everybody, was the stall worth of that football team.”</p><p>The Broncos are going to be very tough to score touchdowns on this season. They have a star at every position, led by Patrick Surtain II, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year winner in 2024-25. Surtain is the top cornerback in the NFL and leads a strong secondary. As noted above, adding Hufanga is a huge deal, as he was a First-Team All-Pro in 2022.</p><p>Greenlaw and Alex Singleton form one of the top inside linebacker cores in the league. Prior to last season, Singleton had four-plus seasons with at least 120 tackles. He enters his fourth season in Denver after playing just three games last season due to an injury. If those two can stay healthy, they could both be 100+ tackle guys. Greenlaw also only played just two games last season.</p><p>Denver plays in a competitive AFC West Division with the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, and Las Vegas Raiders. All four of those teams will be threats to make the playoffs. And they also have a few underrated players <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/2-broncos-underrated-sleepers-break-out-2025-nfl-season">who could shine this season</a>. Furthermore, here is one perfect move the Broncos need to make to fill out their roster before the 2025 training camp.</p><p>The Broncos will break open their camp on July 16 at Broncos Park with the rookies reporting. The veterans will come in on July 22.</p><p>There’s no doubt Denver will have a stout defense in 2025. And they have a dynamic playmaker in quarterback Bo Nix on the other side of the ball. But the Broncos have not addressed the receiver position enough to make the offense a fearful thing for opponents.</p><h2><b>Broncos should sign WR Amari Cooper</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Free-agent-WR-Amari-Cooper.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Yes, we’ve seen the dropoff. Cooper turned in a poor performance in 2024, totaling only 44 catches for 547 yards and four scores. His stats were almost evenly split between the Browns and the Bills, so it can’t all be based on poor quarterback play for the Browns.</p><p>However, Cooper reportedly played through injuries in 2024. If he’s healthier this year, he could provide a spark for the right team. And the Broncos seem to be a good fit.</p><p>With Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., and Devaughn Vale leading the way, the Broncos have a fairly weak <a href="https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2025-roster-rankings-strengths-weaknesses-x-factors" rel="noopener">group of receivers</a>, according to Pro Football Focus.</p><p>“While the Broncos gave quarterback Bo Nix the highest-graded pass-blocking unit in football (83.5), they didn’t provide ample skill-position weapons,” PFF wrote. “The Broncos earned the fifth-worst PFF receiving grade and the fifth-worst PFF rushing grade in 2024. Denver is hoping the following two players will fix that issue.”</p><p>But it’s hard to imagine Evan Engram, a tight end, and RJ Harvey, a running back, solving the issue as PFF suggested.</p><p>“The only major change to the Broncos’ receiving corps is tight end Evan Engram,” PFF wrote. “Over his three years with the Jaguars, Engram ranked fourth among tight ends with 1,163 yards after the catch. That’s even more impressive when considering he played in only nine games in 2024 due to a torn labrum. If he can bounce back, he should be a dangerous weapon in Denver’s offense.”</p><p>Harvey can catch passes out of the backfield, but it’s unlikely to consistently relieve the tension down the field.</p><p>Cooper could land with the 49ers, Saints, or Steelers. Those spots all make sense as well. Also, the Cowboys have pawed around with the idea of adding Cooper. But the Broncos need help more.</p><p>Maybe Pat Bryant will be the answer. Head coach Sean Payton seems to <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/broncos/news/sean-payton-confirms-broncos-pat-bryant-explosiveness-real" rel="noopener">like the rookie</a>, according to SPorts Illustrated.</p><p>“I like bigger receivers. He’s good at the line of scrimmage. I would say he has exceptionally strong hands in traffic,” Payton said of Bryant on Wednesday. “So it’s not that I don’t like smaller receivers, I do, but the bigger receivers that can block and are physical at the line of scrimmage… He showed those traits.</p><p>“(There are) little things we’re coaching up, but you like what you see. I like what I see. He’s tough. There are things where he’s catching one like this (over the shoulder). There are things that you’re immediately on these guys. That’s good to great. That’s coaching.”</p><p>But a veteran like Cooper would help Bryant move into a more prominent role as the season goes along. It makes a lot of sense if the Broncos are serious about trying to make a Super Bowl run.</p><p>Still, Bryant’s passion for the game has Payton giddy.</p><p>“Interview him,” Payton said. “Be around him. It’s so important to him. I would say that’s probably the case with so many of these young guys. It’s not like an accident. There’s a profile we’re looking for. It’s not easy always. Sometimes that requires more trips and visits. But we’re looking for a certain profile.”</p><p>So Cooper may not be on the Broncos’ radar. That’s especially true with Payton’s assessment of what he expects from Troy Franklin, according to a post on X by Luca Evans.</p><p>Sean Payton on Marvin Mims’ leap last year:</p><p>“I think you’re going to see those type of ascensions with players like Troy (Franklin).”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But one of the hot takes came from behind Bo Nix, as the Broncos have an exciting mix of running backs on their roster.</p><p>Currently sitting in the starter’s box is rookie R.J. Harvey. But he will likely be pushed hard by free-agent signee J.K. Dobbins.</p><h2><b>RB J.K. Dobbins adding to Broncos mix</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/full-1.jpg"><figcaption>David Butler II-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he’s not sure <a href="https://www.denverbroncos.com/news/it-s-going-to-help-the-competition-broncos-add-another-good-football-player-to-running-back-corps-in-j-k-dobbins" rel="noopener">how things will play</a> out, according to denverbroncos.com.</p><p>“We’ll see how training camp goes, see how all the carries go,” Payton said. “You know what? When that time comes, you guys are going to know just like I’m going to know. You’re going to see it.”</p><p>And Dobbins figures prominently in the team’s plans. He scored nine touchdowns last season for the Chargers and passed the 1,000-yard mark from scrimmage.</p><p>“(Dobbins is) another good football player,” Payton said. “We’re interested in those guys.</p><p>“When a play’s blocked, you want to see that yardage and some (extra),” Payton said. “The good runners, they have a little spaghetti sauce to the recipe that’s important. I don’t want to make comparisons to him because I haven’t been with him long enough, but when you see the consistency, it’s not an accident.”</p><p>Dobbins caught the eye of Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph last year.</p><p>“He’s a real runner,” Joseph said. “Playing him last year, I thought he was one of the best backs we saw. His quickness, his power he plays with, his intelligence on third down — he’s a three-down back. That makes it difficult. One-on-one, he was a tough tackle for us. So, I’m happy he’s a Bronco.”</p><p>But Harvey is also <a href="https://broncoswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/broncos/2025/06/18/nfl-jk-dobbins-rj-harvey-broncos-rotation/84246072007/" rel="noopener">a key element</a>. Dobbins acknowledged Harvey’s youth, according to broncoswire.com.</p><p>“I’ll bring those skills, but I know this room is also young,” Dobbins said. “I want to bring some leadership to them. (I want to) help them grow as NFL players, because it can be tough. Especially the young rookie, RJ, he’s going to be really good.</p><p>“It’s my job as a six-year (veteran) now — going on six years — I’m still 26, though, I’m young. It’s my job to help him grow and pass the game along to him. Hopefully, he has a great career. He’s going to be really good. I see a special player in him. He’s going to help me out, and I’m going to help him out. He’s going to be great.”</p><h2><b>Safety Brandon Jones looking to shine</b></h2><p>A six-year veteran, Jones said he wants to <a href="https://www.denverbroncos.com/news/mile-high-morning-after-impactful-first-season-in-denver-s-brandon-jones-looking-for-continued-growth-in-year-2-with-broncos" rel="noopener">build on the success</a> he had in his first year in Denver, according to denverbroncos.com.</p><p>“Overall, I want to grow in every aspect,” Jones said Tuesday. “I don’t think you can ever be too good at one thing. I was glad I was able to show that I can be more versatile, especially being labeled early on in my career as one thing. I’m just excited to continue to do what I can do and be a great teammate and leader for this defense.”</p><p>Jones totaled three interceptions and a team-high 115 tackles last season. And he should get help from newcomer Talanoa Hufanga.</p><p>“I would say both of us are really good at multitasking,” Jones said. “We can do a lot of different things. Whatever is asked of us. We can just have a lot of freedom and feel comfortable with whoever goes down in certain situations. We have a lot of faith and trust in each other. The Steelers refrained from signing a starting quarterback during free agency.</p><p>Then they held off on taking a passer in the draft until the sixth round. Finally, that patience paid off, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-aaron-rodgers-officially-signs-1-year-contract">Rodgers agreed to a one-year deal</a> with the team. But the addition of the four-time MVP doesn’t impress Dan Orlovsky.</p><p>The former player turned talking head was discussing which teams boast the most offensive talent in the AFC on the Pat McAfee Show and concluded that the Steelers <a href="https://x.com/ESPNNFL/status/1935408818835300848" rel="noopener">fall short</a>.</p><p>“As far as Pittsburgh goes, you’ve got two guys in the pass game that you really have to focus on. And then everyone else is like, OK, we’re gonna make you beat us,” Orlovsky said per NFL on ESPN.</p><p>He then added a painful declaration for Pittsburgh fans. “The Broncos are gonna be better than the Steelers.”</p><h2><b>Can Aaron Rodgers deliver a vintage season for the Steelers?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Aaron-Rodgers_6facde.jpg"><figcaption>Philip G. And neither team has had any postseason success this decade as the Steelers last won a playoff game in 2016, while the Broncos’ last victory came a year earlier, in 2015.</p><p>Yet while Denver is building around a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-bo-nix-earns-rave-review-from-key-offensive-lineman-ahead-2025">young franchise quarterback in Bo Nix</a>, who’s received rave reviews heading into his second season, the Steelers are hoping Rodgers has gas left in the tank as he embarks on his 21st NFL campaign.</p><p>Opinions on the Rodgers signing vary greatly as some believe the veteran QB <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-aaron-rodgers-super-bowl-contenders-ex-qb-says">makes the Steelers a Super Bowl contender</a>, while others <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-chris-long-doubts-aaron-rodgers-russell-wilson-upgrade">don’t believe he’s a significant upgrade</a> over Russell Wilson.</p><p>Pittsburgh jettisoned both Wilson and Justin Fields after they combined to lead the team to a 10-7 record. The Steelers also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-dallas-trade-george-pickens-steelers-deal">moved on from George Pickens</a>, trading the mercurial wideout to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.</p><p>So presumably, the “two guys in the pass game” Orlovsky believes warrant attention are DK Metcalf, who arrived through a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, and… Pat Freiermuth? The other options are Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek. Not exactly an intimidating receivers room.</p><p>Still, Rodgers has been able to elevate the play of his wideouts in the past. Denver closed mandatory minicamp on June 12, and we look at the three players who could potentially be cut after their 2025 minicamp.</p><p>Denver has already made some major offseason moves. First,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-denver-stole-dre-greenlaw-49ers-last-ditch-effort"> the Broncos signed Dre Greenlaw</a>, while also bringing back Jarrett Stidham and adding Sam Ehlinger. Still, the biggest move may be the one they just made. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-denver-poaches-j-k-dobbins-chargers-5-25-million-contract">Broncos recently signed J.K. Dobbins</a>, who played last season for the Los Angeles Chargers. Meanwhile, they just closed their mandatory minicamp. The Broncos will open training camp in July.</p><p>Between now and then, Sean Payton and the front office will be making moves. They will certainly bring in some more players, but in the process, these are the players that could unexpectedly find themselves as free agents soon.</p><h2><b>J.K. Dobbins takes a roster spot</b></h2><p>The Broncos’ running game struggled last season. They were 16th in the NFL in rushing yards per game, and nearly a quarter of their rushing yards last year came from Bo Nix. The Broncos were also tied for 22nd in the NFL in rushing touchdowns last season, with four of their 12 rushing touchdowns coming from Nix.  It became a clear need that Denver had to address this offseason.</p><p>First, Javonte Williams was allowed to leave in free agency. He was the leading rusher last year with 513 yards. He also scored four times last season. Meanwhile, Audric Estime ran for 310 yards and two scores as a rookie last season. The Broncos also made other moves at running back this offseason. RJ Harvey was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft this past year by the Denver Broncos. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/1-broncos-rookie-who-stood-out-2025-minicamp">Harvey has already stood out in rookie minicamp</a> for the Broncos. In his last two years at UCF, he ran for just under 3,000 yards while also scoring 38 times on the ground.</p><p>Denver also just recently brought in Dobbins. Dobbins had a great season for the Chargers last year, playing in 13 games and running for 905 yards with nine scores. His 905 yards were the most of his career, while his nine touchdowns tied a career high. With Dobbins and Harvey now in the backfield, Jaleel McLaughlin may be the odd man out. McLaughlin went undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft out of Youngstown State. He has run for 906 yards in his two seasons with the Broncos, but has scored just twice. With Dobbins expecting to take the starting role and Harvey as the second back, McLaughlin could find himself looking for new work soon.</p><h2><b>The Broncos cut a 2022 draft pick</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Preseason-Denver-Broncos-at-San-Francisco-49ers.jpg"><figcaption>Kyle Terada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>One of the major moves for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-sign-talanoa-hufanga-45-million-contract">Broncos this offseason was the signing of Talanoa Hufanga</a>. When healthy, he has been great in his career. In 2022, Hufanga had 97 tackles, with nine pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two sacks, and four interceptions. He was having another great year in 2023 before tearing his ACL and missing the rest of the season. Last season, he was starting to come back into form before a wrist injury placed him on injured reserve again. Still, he is clearly slated to be the starting safety in Denver, along with Brandon Jones.</p><p>With Jones and Hufanga in the starting role, and Devon Key and P.J. Locke returning as the backups at the safety position, there is a logjam at safety for the Broncos. Further, Denver brought in Sam Franklin this offseason. Franklin was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Carolina Panthers out of Temple. He has not established himself as a starting-level safety, but has established himself as a solid special-teams player, and someone who stays on rosters for those skills.</p><p>With that, the odd man out will be Delarrin Turner-Yell. Turner-Yell was drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma. In 2022 and 2023, he would appear in 30 games, but had just 42 tackles and one fumble recovery. He also had just one pass breakup. He would tear his ACL at the end of the 2023 season and then miss the entire 2024 season while recovering. Turner-Yell has not met expectations so far, and he could be on his way out this year.</p><h2><b>A rookie pushes a veteran out</b></h2><p>Safety is not the only secondary position that could see someone find their way to free agency this offseason. The battle at corner is also prevalent for the Broncos this offseason. They have two established starting corners currently. Patrick Surtain II has become one of the best defensive backs in the NFL. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-patrick-surtain-ii-father-reacts-cornerback-2024-dpoy-award">Surtain is coming off being named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year</a> this past season. Meanwhile, Riley Moss has become a solid corner on the other side. Last year, he had 86 tackles and one interception.</p><p>In the first round of the NFL draft, the Broncos drafted Jahdae Barron with the 20th overall pick. Barron was a great player at Texas, capping his career with being named an All-American and winning the Jim Thorpe Award. Barron has already shown that he is ready for the NFL game and looks to be the starting nickel corner for the Broncos this upcoming season. With the Broncos also having Damarri Mathis and Kris Abrams-Draine on the roster, Ja’Quan McMillian could be the odd man out thanks to Barron joining the team.</p><p>McMillian was signed as an undrafted free agent in the 2022 offseason out of East Carolina. He was a second-team All-American and a two-time Second-Team All-AAC player in college. He did not play much as a rookie, not playing until week 18. Still, he became the primary nickel corner in his second season. He has now been the primary nickel corner for the last two seasons, having four interceptions and 119 tackles in the two years. Still, McMillian has not logged many snaps outside of the nickel spot, and with Barron now on the roster, he would be the sixth cornerback. But it is the defensive side of the football where two underrated Broncos sleepers could break out in the 2025 NFL season.</p><p>It’s beginning to look like it could be a special season in Denver. Head coach Sean Payton and his team could even challenge the Chiefs’ supremacy in the AFC West. But for that to happen, some behind-the-scenes guys will need to step up and have good seasons.</p><p>Included in that mix are a pair of players who hope to make big impacts in 2025. First up is a second-year player.</p><h2><b>Broncos LB Dondrea Tillman looking to shine</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Denver-Broncos-LB-Dondrea-Tillman.jpg"><figcaption>Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Broncos signed Tillman out of the USFL, and he played in 12 games last season. The good news is he racked up five sacks in limited action. That shows he has the ability to get things done.</p><p>Broncos defensive coordinator said he <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2025/01/03/broncos-journal-dondrea-tillman-suprising-impact-defense/" rel="noopener">didn’t know a lot</a> about Tillman at first, according to denverpost.com.</p><p>“I knew he was a big guy who can run,” Joseph said, adding that Tillman is the perfect fourth outside linebacker for the Broncos in 2025. “You have young guys who can rush the passer (but) can’t finish. (Tillman) is a finisher.”</p><p>Payton said he didn’t expect Tillman to put up solid numbers right off the bat.</p><p>“He’s certainly been a big plus,” Payton said. “He’s given us physicality. He works his tail off, and he works at it. When you can get a player like that, maybe you weren’t counting on, that’s a good sign.”</p><p>Included in Payton’s surprise was Tillman’s two-sack game last September, according to Sports Illustrated.</p><p>“We weren’t going to just let the other three play 60 snaps or 50 snaps,” Payton said. “A guy like that was coming up; he’s got to be playing in the kicking game and then getting snaps on defense. I was pleased with his effort. He’s strong. We’ve seen a lot from him. I was excited to see him take advantage of the opportunity.”</p><p>Tillman said he believes in himself.</p><p>“I knew what my soul told me,” he said. “I just had to work for it. I’m good enough to play here.”</p><h2><b>Safety Brandon Jones ready to soar</b></h2><p>After four years in Miami, Jones showed quite a bit in his first year with the Broncos. He started 15 games, totaled 115 tackles, and defended an impressive 10 passes.</p><p>Pro Football Focus said Jones is the Broncos’ <a href="https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-most-underrated-players-all-32-nfl-teams-2025" rel="noopener">most underrated player.</a></p><p>“2024 was a massive season for Jones, who signed a three-year free-agent contract despite not having played more than 644 defensive snaps in a year while dealing with several injuries,” Jonathan Macri wrote. “Jones not only proved the Broncos right in signing him, but also exceeded expectations by finishing as one of the five highest-graded safeties overall (84.8) and in coverage (89.8) in 2024. He played a career-high 1,042 defensive snaps — almost double his previous career high — and looked more comfortable than he ever has in Vance Joseph’s defense, putting him in the conversation as one of the league’s best heading into 2025.”</p><p>And Jones said he <a href="https://www.denverbroncos.com/news/mile-high-morning-after-impactful-first-season-in-denver-s-brandon-jones-looking-for-continued-growth-in-year-2-with-broncos#:~:text=%22%5BHe's%20a%5D%20communicator%2C,presence%20and%20someone%20who's%20smart.%22" rel="noopener">wants to get better</a>, according to denverbroncos.com.</p><p>“Overall, I want to grow in every aspect,” Jones said. “I don’t think you can ever be too good at one thing. I was glad I was able to show that I can be more versatile, especially being labeled early on in my career as one thing. I’m just excited to continue to do what I can do and be a great teammate and leader for this defense.</p><p>“You get in trouble as soon as you get complacent. I think we are going to be as good as we want to be, and the sky is the limit. We know what we did last year, and that feeds us going into this year with super big goals for us individually and as a unit. We just have to make the most of it.”</p><p>Payton praised Jones as a good communicator.</p><p>“Very important and an important guy for us a year ago when we signed him,” Payton said. “A veteran presence and someone who’s smart.”</p><p>And his efforts combine with the Broncos’ approach to give the team <a href="https://www.denverbroncos.com/news/we-re-just-going-to-keep-striving-for-greatness-broncos-continuing-to-put-in-work-embracing-expectations-as-2025-offseason-program-nears-end" rel="noopener">high hopes for 2025</a>, according to denverbroncos.com.</p><p>“I think we’re handling it really well,” safety Brandon Jones said. “We’re still a young team. I think that just kind of brings that juice and energy and kind of that overall dog mentality that we all have. We never want to get comfortable; [you] never can get comfortable in this league. So I think we’re just going to keep striving for greatness and continue to do what we can do.”</p><p>The Broncos could have one of the NFL’s top defensive units. Aside from football, Kawada is an avid combat sports and basketball bettor.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Denver Broncos</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After making the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/broncos-get-message-from-matthew-mcconaughey-after-drafting-texas-star">Denver Broncos carried their momentum</a> into 2025 with an encouraging incoming rookie class. Now, with the most optimism they have had since winning Super Bowl 50, the Broncos have an intriguing offseason ahead of Sean Payton’s third season.</p><p>Without much cap space, the Broncos made just a couple of notable signings in free agency. Denver added defensive stars Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw, but could not afford to make any other meaningful moves until <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/broncos-news-denver-poaches-j-k-dobbins-chargers-5-25-million-contract">signing veteran running back J.K. Dobbins</a> in early June. Instead, general manager George Paton spent the majority of his focus on the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><p>Denver added seven players from the draft, including four on the first two days. Like free agency, the team did not have enough capital to draft as many rookies as others. Regardless, the Broncos’ quality over quantity approach in the 2025 offseason set up several compelling positional battles in the coming months.</p><p>Coming off their first double-digit win season since 2015 — their most recent Super Bowl season — expectations for the Broncos are high. Despite rifling through six head coaches and eight starting quarterbacks in the last 10 years, Denver seemingly found its ideal combination moving forward. The hopeful franchise has a lot to work with in the 2025 offseason, giving almost no player on its current roster any guarantees.</p><h2><b>WR Marvin Mims Jr.</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Broncos-WR-Marvin-Mims.jpg"><figcaption>Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Broncos had high hopes for Marvin Mims when they drafted him in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He improved his production in his second season, but it just has not been enough. The team expected Mims to elevate the offense as a complementary deep threat to Courtland Sutton, but his inconsistency has yet to even make him a full-time starter.</p><p>After a semi-promising rookie campaign, Mims entered 2024 as one of Denver’s top breakout candidates. However, he failed to make a lasting impact, starting just two games for the Broncos all season – five fewer than he did as a rookie. Mims ended the year as Bo Nix’s second-leading receiver with 503 receiving yards, but played just <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/den/2024-snap-counts.htm" rel="noopener">27 percent of the offensive snaps</a> on the year.</p><p>Of Mims’ 503 receiving yards, 341 of them came in the final five games of the year. His strong finish is an encouraging sign moving forward. One just has to wonder how long the Broncos will keep buying into his potential and overlooking his frustrating inconsistency. With Denver drafting Pat Bryant in the third round, Mims’ window might already be closing.</p><p>Bryant’s 6-foot-2, 204-pound frame is already where the Broncos want it to be. Bryant nabbed 10 touchdowns in his final season at Illinois, showing off his lanky physique and contested catch ability. Payton and Nix seem to already like him, with the rookie developing an early rapport with his quarterback.</p><p>Even if it is not Bryant, Mims’ job is far from safe. Second-year wideout Troy Franklin, Nix’s college teammate, is reportedly having an excellent offseason and pushing all three starters. Mims is the weakest link of the trio, even with his strong finish to 2024. Unless he takes a leap of his own, either Bryant or Franklin could realistically surpass him on the depth chart.</p><h2><b>DL John Franklin-Myers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Broncos-DE-John-Franklin-Myers.jpg"><figcaption>Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>In his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-pick-up-john-franklin-myers-draft-day-trade-with-jets">first season with the team, John Franklin-Myers</a> gave the Broncos what they wanted out of him. He recorded a career-high seven sacks, doubling his 2023 output. He was difficult to notice in Denver’s elite defensive front, but Franklin-Myers was quietly one of the most efficient players on the team.</p><p>Unfortunately, Franklin-Myers appears to be a victim of the circumstances. There is nothing wrong with him in the starting lineup, but he is forced to compete with third-round pick Saivion Jones. A true defensive end, Jones fits the mold of Vance Joseph’s defense.</p><p>Joseph bases his defense on speed on his defensive line, both outside and the interior. Jones, an athletic and powerful defensive end, fits the type of player Joseph wants up front. Jones is also a plus run defender, amassing eight tackles for loss in 2024.</p><p>The Broncos’ 3-4 defense supports many edge-rushers, but Franklin-Myers is the most vulnerable. No matter how good an offseason Jones has, he will not supplant Zach Allen, Nik Bonitto or Jonathon Cooper. Bonitto led the way with 13.5 sacks in 2024, while Allen and Cooper perfectly supplemented him with their own career years.</p><p>Despite playing for three teams in six years, Franklin-Myers has become a staple of the Broncos’ defense and will not get brushed over by a rookie in the 2025 offseason. But Jones, who was practically hand-picked for Joseph’s defense, will push him all summer.</p><h2><b>RB Jaleel McLaughlin</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Broncos-RB-Jaleel-McLaughlin.jpg"><figcaption>Katie Stratman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Broncos entered the 2025 offseason with a clear need to address their backfield. They did so by letting Javonte Williams walk and drafting RJ Harvey in the second round before signing Dobbins one month later. Denver’s run game, which was one of the worst in 2024, should look much different in 2025.</p><p>Harvey and Dobbins are the latest additions to a crowded backfield that already included Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime and Tyler Badie. McLaughlin, who had 496 rushing yards in 2024, is the top returning rusher, though Estime and Badie shone brighter in their limited opportunities. None of the Broncos’ returning running backs have impressed anybody, putting all three of them on the roster bubble.</p><p>As the oldest of the three, McLaughlin has the shortest leash. Though he is entering just his third season in the league, the Broncos already seem over McLaughlin. Payton expressed frustration with his inefficiency throughout the 2024 season, before making his position with the team crystal clear in the offseason. It seems unlikely Denver lets Estime or Badie go after just one season, putting McLaughlin the furthest on the edge.</p><p>Even after signing Dobbins, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/rising-denver-broncos-rookie-rj-harvey-turning-heads-2025-otas">Harvey still seems to be the Broncos’ preferred starter</a>. At 26, the injury-prone Dobbins would typically be the odd man out, but his late inclusion suggests Denver prefers him to McLaughlin. Estime and Badie are not safe either, but McLaughlin is suddenly forced to pray for a roster spot after Harvey and Dobbins suddenly shucked him down the depth chart.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
