If Jones heads for greener pastures this offseason, the 49ers will need to find a new backup for Purdy. And they should have plenty of options.</p><p>The Athletic’s Matt Barrows <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6821760/2025/11/20/mac-jones-trade-brandon-aiyuk-49ers-mailbag/" rel="noopener">suggested a few potential quarterbacks</a> who could become the next reclamation projects in San Francisco.</p><p>“Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell has a lot of Jones-ian qualities, including good anticipation (and not much running ability),” Barrows wrote on Thursday. “The 49ers were sniffing around O’Connell before the 2023 draft. He’s still got one more year on his rookie contract, and the Raiders would have to release him for him to be available. But if they did, he’d make sense for San Francisco.”</p><p>Barrows also noted that San Fran took a long look at Zach Wilson during the pre-draft process in 2021.</p><p>“A bigger fish would be Zach Wilson, who was drafted one pick ahead of Trey Lance in 2021 and who’s scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. The 49ers took a long look at Wilson that year because they were shopping for quarterbacks. He’s currently in Miami under Mike McDaniel, which means he’s already familiar with the Shanahan system.”</p><p>The 49ers could also draft a rookie or pick an entirely unexpected player as their next project.</p><h2><b>Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo reunions not in the cards for 49ers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/garoppolo-on-Rams.jpg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Barrows also noted a few players who certainly do not seem like they’ll be headed back to San Francisco.</p><p>He highlighted Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance as potential fits who likely won’t return to the 49ers.</p><p>“Lance and former 49ers starter Jimmy Garoppolo also will be free agents, but, gee, I don’t see a reunion in the future,” Barrows concluded. “After the recent 49ers-Rams game, I watched Shanahan shake hands with Sean McVay and start heading toward the 49ers’ tunnel. His path took him directly in front of Garoppolo, and I wondered if they’d bro hug or at least shake hands or even acknowledge each other. They did not — it was like two ships passing in the night.”</p><p>49ers GM John Lynch has an excellent track record. With some even saying that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-insider-mac-jones-brock-purdy-quarterback-controversy">49ers had a quarterback controversy with Jones and Purdy,</a> the same could happen with the Minnesota Vikings, as Mike Florio teases the idea of a deal.</p><p>Florio’s latest column focuses on the<a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/mac-jones-could-become-minnesotas-j-j-mccarthy-insurance-policy-in-2026" rel="noopener"> “chatter”</a> he’s hearing that Minnesota could be looking into a trade that sends Jones to them, looking for him to potentially be a Sam Darnold situation from last season. In nine games, Jones has thrown for 2,151 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions, with a 5-3 record.</p><p>“Earlier this year, the Vikings said farewell to Sam Darnold 1.0. Next year, they could be saying hello to Sam Darnold 2.0,” Florio wrote. “There’s already chatter in some circles that, in the 2026 offseason, the Vikings will explore trading for 49ers quarterback Mac Jones.”</p><p>“First, the 49ers have to be certain that Purdy remains their long-term quarterback,” Florio continued. “As it stands, they can keep both Purdy and Jones through 2026 before making a choice between the two…But if the 49ers want to make a clear statement of support for Purdy, they’ll trade Jones and find another backup who can run the Kyle Shanahan system.”</p><h2><b>The Vikings could use Mac Jones to help J.J. While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-brock-purdy-could-be-active-rams-mac-jones-twist">Brock Purdy could be active</a> for the first time since Week 4, Mac Jones will get the start against LA. Jones has gone 5-2 filling in for Purdy, who suffered a turf toe injury that’s limited him to two games this season.</p><p>Jones’ performance has forced some analysts to question what Kyle Shanahan will do if/when Purdy is fully healthy. ESPN insider Peter Schrager finds it <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_ACWnTl28w&amp;t=451s" rel="noopener">hard to believe</a> the veteran coach will move on from Jones if the team is rolling.</p><p>“If they win this weekend and they’re suddenly 7-3 and Mac Jones has [a strong performance], I don’t know a world where Kyle Shanahan just says, ‘Well it’s Brock’s [job].’ So it’s a very interesting conversation. What I would note is this. Brock Purdy is injured. Like, that is a real injury,” Schrager said on <i>Get Up</i>.</p><h2><b>Do the 49ers have a quarterback controversy?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Jones-and-Purdy.jpg"><figcaption>D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Purdy’s status has been murky of late. Earlier this week, Shanahan said the Pro Bowl passer wasn’t close to returning. Now he has a chance to suit up on Sunday after earning a questionable tag.</p><p>It’s clear that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-what-surgeon-consults-rams-said-brock-purdy-tricky-injury">Purdy’s injury is tricky</a>. But so is the 49ers’ quarterback situation.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-mac-jones-shuts-down-brock-purdy-qb-controversy">Jones tried to prevent a controversy</a> by reaffirming Purdy’s position as the team’s starter. But, as Schrager notes, it will be hard to make a switch if the team continues winning with Jones under center.</p><p>“The other wrinkle to it is, I’ve covered Kyle since he was in Houston and Cleveland. This isn’t someone who is obsessed with, how much are we paying this person? … The best quarterback for this team will play.”</p><p>Schrager also confirmed that Shanahan’s rumored interest in Jones during the 2021 draft was “very real.” San Francisco ultimately selected Trey Lance with the third overall pick and Jones went 15th to the New England Patriots.</p><p>Fans surely remember the 49ers sent the Miami Dolphins three first-round picks and a 2022 third-rounder to move from 12th to third in the draft. Lance started four games for San Francisco before being traded after the 2022 season.</p><p>Shanahan added Jones to the roster over the offseason while signing Purdy to a five-year, $265 million contract. If the 49ers ultimately go with Jones as the full-time starter, it would come at a tremendous cost considering San Francisco could have just drafted him 12th overall in 2021.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But San Francisco faces a major challenge in Week 10 as the team will host the red-hot Los Angeles Rams in a divisional clash Sunday.</p><p>Mac Jones has gone 5-2 while filling in for Brock Purdy. A turf toe injury suffered in Week 1 has limited the 49ers’ starting quarterback to just two games this season.</p><p>However, Purdy could be active against the Rams after returning to a limited practice and earning a questionable tag. But even if Purdy <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1986916645067956678" rel="noopener">suits up on Sunday</a>, head coach Kyle Shanahan says Jones will start in Week 10, per Ian Rapoport.</p><h2><b>Brock Purdy will be 49ers’ QB2 if active in Week 10</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Brock-Purdy-2.jpg"><figcaption>Kyle Terada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Pro Bowl passer’s status has been murky of late. The potential to suit up against the Rams is a positive sign for Purdy’s recovery. Still, the 49ers don’t need to rush him back with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-mac-jones-personal-2025-season-goal-clear">Jones playing well in his place</a>.</p><p>San Francisco has suffered significant injuries on both sides of the ball. But the team has been able to overcome the setbacks, thanks in large part to Jones’ performance. For the past few weeks, backup quarterback Mac Jones has kept San Francisco afloat. Ahead of his next start versus LA in a couple of days, tight end George Kittle <a href="https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/196055-49ers-george-kittle-jokes-toughness/" rel="noopener">had a hilarious theory about</a> Jones he relayed to 49ers Webzone’s David Bonilla.</p><p>“I think he’s doing it intentionally now,” Kittle said jokingly to Bonilla. “I think that’s kind of what it seems like. Mac Jones is slated to make his eighth start of the season in place of Brock Purdy in Week 10. Not this team, though. Against all odds, the 49ers are 6-3 after nine injury-riddled weeks this season. Despite a few stumbles here and there, a division title is well within reach for this team.</p><p>How are they doing this? Well, Mac Jones, who’s been a beneficiary of the 49ers’ injury woes,<a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/week-9-nfl-takeaways-bills-beat-chiefs-different" rel="noopener"> has an answer</a>. The backup quarterback said that Kyle Shanahan’s next-man-up mentality and his commitment to developing the younger players have allowed this team to thrive despite missing multiple key stars.</p><p>“It starts with the culture, for sure,” Jones told Albert Breer. “Kyle [Shanahan], the way he sets the table for the team, he wants to develop everybody—from undrafted rookies to fifth-year quarterbacks on their third team. He wants everyone to be great. That’s what it’s all about. Kyle just does a great job, defense, too, and special teams, everybody has a system. And when you have a system you believe in and it works, these are the results.”</p><p>The 49ers have missed multiple key players on both sides of the ball. Jones has only gotten multiple starts this season due to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-not-close-brock-purdy-injury-bad-sign">Brock Purdy’s injury issues</a>. Jones is also working with a depleted cast: Brandon Aiyuk is yet to make his return from his ACL tear, Jauan Jennings has missed some time this season, Ricky Pearsall has been out since Week 4, and George Kittle has only recently made his return to the field.</p><p>On defense, the losses have been far more devastating. They first lost star pass rusher Nick Bosa early in the season with an ACL tear. Later on, they lost star linebacker Fred Warner, this time to an Achilles tear. Coupled with the various injuries the other players have sustained, you have a recipe for disaster. Instead, Shanahan has reinvented this recipe to turn the 49ers into a contender this season.</p><p>The 49ers are coming off a dominant win against the New York Giants. I think Adrian was going to go in either way, and they wanted him to get in there. But when they scored, you know, you just got to get the first down with offense. He’s a good friend of mine. Just gotten to know him. He’s been a great voice in that room, along with Brock and Rourke as well. Jones didn’t need to exit the game, but he recognized an opportunity to get Martinez his debut.</p><p>Jones started hot against New York, opening the game 14-for-14 before finishing with efficient numbers across the board. He connected on a 21-yard dart to Kendrick Bourne in a tight window and found Jauan Jennings for a red-zone touchdown.</p><p>While Jones managed the passing game, Christian McCaffrey was the engine behind San Francisco’s offense. He totaled 173 yards from scrimmage with two touchdowns, rushing for 106 yards on 28 carries and adding 67 receiving yards. The former New England Patriots quarterback is doing a decent job under center, as San Francisco is 4-2 when he starts at quarterback. Through six games played, Mac Jones has accumulated 1,597 passing yards and eight touchdowns while completing 65.9% of his pass attempts. However, he has thrown five interceptions as well.</p><p>The last time Brock Purdy took the field was in Week 4 when the 49ers fell 26-21 to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Purdy ended that game with 309 passing yards and two touchdowns while throwing a 57.8% completion percentage. He also threw two interceptions on the day.</p><p>With the Nov. 4 trade deadline right around the corner, we could see San Francisco attempt to find ways to improve. He’s led San Francisco to an improbable 5-2 record despite the many injuries to their lineup this season.</p><p>Jones will most likely be rewarded with a big contract to be another team’s backup after this season. He might even get rewarded with a starter’s contract if things break the right way. That being said, Jones<a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1980233326947635400" rel="noopener"> has already been rewarded for his solid play this season</a>, solely based on how his contract works.</p><p>“With the #49ers beating the #Falcons on Sunday night, QB Mac Jones unlocked a $400K incentive with his fourth win as a starter,” Ian Rapoport reported. “Now that he’s reached the four-win threshold, he gets $100K for each W.”</p><p>Jones probably never expected to be in a position to even have a chance to win four games. Purdy has been a force to be reckoned with for the 49ers over the last few years. It was impossible to foresee Purdy getting benched… unless of course he was injured. After Purdy injured his toe earlier this season, though, Jones got a chance to be the starter for a playoff-caliber team (albeit one dealing with injuries).</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-injury-report-aligns-ian-rapoport-mac-jones-brock-purdy-prediction">Jones has gotten the starting nod in five of the 49ers’ games this season</a>. He’s lost just one game, his first start against the then-undefeated Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3. During those five games, amassing a 67% completion rate. He’s thrown six touchdowns and four interceptions in that time period, which isn’t a pretty number. However, he’s done enough in the Kyle Shanahan system to keep everything moving.</p><p>With Purdy set to make his return to the 49ers soon, the Cinderella story of Jones might come to an end. Still, his story has been quite the feel-good story this season, and he’s piloted the team to a stellar record without their usual starter.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
