He also had one rather famous drop — even though quarterback Patrick Mahomes magnanimously took the blame for it, according to Sports Illustrated — that <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/11/21/patrick-mahomes-took-blame-costly-incompletion-marquez-valdes-scantling" rel="noopener">played a key role</a> in a late November loss to the Eagles.</p><p>However, Valdes-Scantling came to the Bills with two Super Bowl rings, and a had a touchdown reception in last year’s title game against the 49ers. He started his career with the Packers, playing from 2018-2021. His best season included 690 yards receiving and six scores in 2020.</p><p>It appeared Valdes-Scantling had been turning the corner with the Bills. Josh Allen said he believed a <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/bills/news/buffalo-bills-josh-allen-marquez-valdes-scantling-groove" rel="noopener">chemistry had developed</a> recently with the veteran receiver, according to Sports Illustrated.</p><p>“Obviously a late start with him, coming to OTAs fairly later than most guys, obviously signing him late in the process,” Allen said. “Just getting to know him as a guy and feel his body language on the field, we’ve just been behind with the time.</p><p>“We’ve really gotten into a groove and understand how he’s thinking, he understands how I’m thinking. He’s a very smart player. He’s been on a lot of really good offenses in his past, (and) been around some really good quarterbacks. He knows what he’s talking about, he’s got that experience. It’s good to lean on that.”</p><h2><b>What did Joe Brady say about Marquez Valdes-Scantling?</b></h2><p>Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady agreed with Allen, saying Valdes-Scantling has been looking comfortable in the Bills scheme.</p><p>“If you’ve been in these practices the last few weeks, you can see his comfort level of him being able to make plays both down the field, just intermediate roles, he’s comfortable in the offense now,” Brady said.</p><p>Will this injury will keep Valdes-Scantling off the 53-man roster? Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky (knee), defensive tackle Austin Johnson (calf), and tight end Quintin Morris (shoulder) also did not return to Saturday’s contest.</p><p>Hopefully, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and the rest of those on the Bulls’ injury report undergo speedy recoveries.</p><p>Valdes-Scantling spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, where he set a sound foundation. Valdes-Scantling’s best year in Green Bay came in 2020 when he amassed a career-high 690 and six touchdowns. Two years later, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs and continued his stout production.</p><p>In 2022, Valdes-Scantling accumulated 687 yards and two TDs. He comes off a 2023 season with totals of 315 yards and one TD in 15 games. The 29-year-old looks to help the Bills’ receiving core stay strong after a massive offseason change.</p><h2><b>Can Bills stay afloat after major offensive change? </b></h2><p>In April of 2024, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/texans-news-houston-acquires-stefon-diggs-blockbuster-bills-trade">Bills pulled off a blockbuster trade</a> that sent former star wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. Diggs was an integral part of Buffalo’s offense for several years. He joined the team in 2020 after five years with the Minnesota Vikings and made an immediate impact.</p><p>During the 2020 season, Diggs amassed a career-high 1,535 yards along with eight TDs, amassing his first and Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. He continued to perform stoutly for three more years, earning three more Pro Bowl selections.</p><p>Diggs totaled 1,183 yards and eight TDS during the 2023 season. He and the Bills hoped to make a deep playoff run, but the team lost in the second round to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.</p><p>With Diggs no longer on the roster, star QB Josh Allen will have to use other weapons in the offense. However, they’ve been hard at work revamping the position for Josh Allen under center, and they added another weapon to the offense for him on Tuesday morning.</p><p>The Bills still have pass-catchers in Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid, and Dawson Knox at their disposal, and they went out and signed Curtis Samuel in free agency while also picking Keon Coleman in the 2024 NFL Draft. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Valdes-Scantling has made a career out of being a speedy big-play threat who can create separation down the field on deep routes. He’s not a number one wideout by any stretch of the imagination, but when he works alongside a crop of other talented playmakers, he can make his mark on games when the ball comes his way.</p><p>The 2023 campaign wasn’t all that great for Valdes-Scantling (21 REC, 315 YDS, 1 TD), as he struggled to make an impact as one of the bigger threats in their offense. He was much better in the postseason, though, (8 REC, 128 YDS, 1 TD), and he played a big role in helping Kansas City win their second straight title, as his lone playoff touchdown came in their 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58.</p><p>Now, Valdes-Scantling will be tasked with coming in and helping out Allen in this new-look offense. There are certainly going to be some bumps that this unit endures along the way given how productive Diggs and Davis were for Allen, so adding a veteran presence with a Super Bowl winning pedigree should help the team out at least a little bit in 2024 and beyond.</p><p>It’s been quite a career for Valdes-Scantling, as he’s gone from catching passes from Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers to doing the same thing with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Now, he will be joining another elite quarterback in Allen, with the hope being that he can stretch the field for him and connect on a few big plays throughout the season.</p><p>While MVS lands with the Bills here, they weren’t the only team interested in adding him to their offense. So, a certain transaction by the Kanas City Chiefs on Wednesday should have caught New York’s attention.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-kansas-city-12-million-marquez-valdes-scantling-contract-decision" rel="noopener">Chiefs released</a> two-time Super Bowl champion Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who was due a $12 million salary cap hit next season. The 29-year-old is coming off a down season, when he had only 21 catches and one touchdown. First, he can spread the field with his speed, opening things up for New York’s stud receiver Garrett Wilson. Valdez-Scantling has averaged 17.0 yards per reception in six NFL seasons and has 16 TD catches.</p><p>Second, he’s a much cheaper option in free agency than top-tier targets like Mike Evans and Calvin Ridley. That would allow the Jets the financial breadth to pursue another receiver, like Travis Boyd or Josh Reynolds. It’s imperative the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jets-new-york-sneaky-free-agents-sign" rel="noopener">Jets fill multiple holes</a> behind Wilson at wide receiver, as opposed to adding another star. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/biggest-needs-jets-must-address-2024-nfl-offseason" rel="noopener">Jets also have</a> a myriad of other issues to address on offense, notably their line.</p><p>Finally, Valdes-Scantling played four seasons with the Green Bay Packers and was a teammate with Aaron Rodgers. That familiarity doesn’t guarantee success – just see how Randall Cobb failed last season in New York – but having a connection to Rodgers is a plus.</p><p>Valdes-Scantling’s best season was with Green Bay in 2020 when he caught six TD passes and averaged a whopping 20.2 yards on 33 receptions.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Aaron Rodgers is on a mission. 45-yard TD to Marquez Valdes-Scantling with time running out in the first-half. His drop rate was 12.5 percent in 2023 and an unacceptable 17.5 percent in 2020. That said, he didn’t have a single drop on 49 targets with the Packers in 2021.</p><p>He can be a bit maddening with his inconsistency. But if the Jets seek multiple receivers, Valdes-Scantling should be on their short list of options this offseason.</p><p>A day after Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jets-news-mecole-hardman-throws-shade-nathaniel-hackett-failed-new-york-stint" rel="noopener">trashed the Jets</a> and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett for his brief, failed tenure in New York, they have a shot at another former Chiefs wideout. They must be hoping Hardman hasn’t gotten in Valdez-Scantiling’s ear about the Jets or else all bets could be off about his availability to play for them.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
