And <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-marquez-valdes-scantling-suffers-worrisome-neck-injury-vs-steelers">a recent injury didn’t help</a> matters. But Valdes-Scantling got a positive injury update after his scary neck injury.</p><p>“X-rays came back negative for #Bills WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (neck), per source. Status for this week is uncertain but this is a positive after he left last night’s game on a cart,”<br>ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on an X post.</p><p>Valdes-Scantling came to the Bills in May, signing a one-year deal.</p><h2><b>Bills WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling hoping to stick around</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Buffalo-Bills-WR-Marquez-Valdez-Scantling.jpg"><figcaption>© Shawn Dowd/Rochester Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>Valdes-Scantling played the last two season with the Chiefs, starting 10 games and totaling 21 catches for 315 yards and a touchdown. He also had one rather famous drop — even though quarterback Patrick Mahomes magnanimously took the blame for it, according to Sports Illustrated — that <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/11/21/patrick-mahomes-took-blame-costly-incompletion-marquez-valdes-scantling" rel="noopener">played a key role</a> in a late November loss to the Eagles.</p><p>However, Valdes-Scantling came to the Bills with two Super Bowl rings, and a had a touchdown reception in last year’s title game against the 49ers. He started his career with the Packers, playing from 2018-2021. His best season included 690 yards receiving and six scores in 2020.</p><p>It appeared Valdes-Scantling had been turning the corner with the Bills. Josh Allen said he believed a <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/bills/news/buffalo-bills-josh-allen-marquez-valdes-scantling-groove" rel="noopener">chemistry had developed</a> recently with the veteran receiver, according to Sports Illustrated.</p><p>“Obviously a late start with him, coming to OTAs fairly later than most guys, obviously signing him late in the process,” Allen said. “Just getting to know him as a guy and feel his body language on the field, we’ve just been behind with the time.</p><p>“We’ve really gotten into a groove and understand how he’s thinking, he understands how I’m thinking. He’s a very smart player. He’s been on a lot of really good offenses in his past, (and) been around some really good quarterbacks. He knows what he’s talking about, he’s got that experience. It’s good to lean on that.”</p><h2><b>What did Joe Brady say about Marquez Valdes-Scantling?</b></h2><p>Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady agreed with Allen, saying Valdes-Scantling has been looking comfortable in the Bills scheme.</p><p>“If you’ve been in these practices the last few weeks, you can see his comfort level of him being able to make plays both down the field, just intermediate roles, he’s comfortable in the offense now,” Brady said.</p><p>Will this injury will keep Valdes-Scantling off the 53-man roster? He’s currently listed as a second-teamer, behind starters Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, and Curtis Samuel. Mack Hollins and K.J. The Bills won 9-3 but not without receiving a handful of worrisome injury report updates. Most notably, wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling suffered a neck injury that saw him <a href="https://x.com/MySportsUpdate/status/1824973208358900198" rel="noopener">exit the game with no return</a>, per Ari Meirov.</p><p>In addition to Valdes-Scantling, the Bills had three other contributors receive untimely updates. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky (knee), defensive tackle Austin Johnson (calf), and tight end Quintin Morris (shoulder) also did not return to Saturday’s contest.</p><p>Hopefully, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and the rest of those on the Bulls’ injury report undergo speedy recoveries.</p><p>Valdes-Scantling spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, where he set a sound foundation. Valdes-Scantling’s best year in Green Bay came in 2020 when he amassed a career-high 690 and six touchdowns. Two years later, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs and continued his stout production.</p><p>In 2022, Valdes-Scantling accumulated 687 yards and two TDs. He comes off a 2023 season with totals of 315 yards and one TD in 15 games. The 29-year-old looks to help the Bills’ receiving core stay strong after a massive offseason change.</p><h2><b>Can Bills stay afloat after major offensive change? </b></h2><p>In April of 2024, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/texans-news-houston-acquires-stefon-diggs-blockbuster-bills-trade">Bills pulled off a blockbuster trade</a> that sent former star wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. Diggs was an integral part of Buffalo’s offense for several years. He joined the team in 2020 after five years with the Minnesota Vikings and made an immediate impact.</p><p>During the 2020 season, Diggs amassed a career-high 1,535 yards along with eight TDs, amassing his first and Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. He continued to perform stoutly for three more years, earning three more Pro Bowl selections.</p><p>Diggs totaled 1,183 yards and eight TDS during the 2023 season. He and the Bills hoped to make a deep playoff run, but the team lost in the second round to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.</p><p>With Diggs no longer on the roster, star QB Josh Allen will have to use other weapons in the offense. Allen looks to continue being one of the best offensive players in the league in 2024 as he and Buffalo aspire to remain competitive in the AFC East.</p><p>The Bills’ win over the Steelers moved their NFL Preseason record to 1-1. However, they’ve been hard at work revamping the position for Josh Allen under center, and they added another weapon to the offense for him on Tuesday morning.</p><p>The Bills still have pass-catchers in Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid, and Dawson Knox at their disposal, and they went out and signed Curtis Samuel in free agency while also picking Keon Coleman in the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s not a number one wideout by any stretch of the imagination, but when he works alongside a crop of other talented playmakers, he can make his mark on games when the ball comes his way.</p><p>The 2023 campaign wasn’t all that great for Valdes-Scantling (21 REC, 315 YDS, 1 TD), as he struggled to make an impact as one of the bigger threats in their offense. He was much better in the postseason, though, (8 REC, 128 YDS, 1 TD), and he played a big role in helping Kansas City win their second straight title, as his lone playoff touchdown came in their 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58.</p><p>Now, Valdes-Scantling will be tasked with coming in and helping out Allen in this new-look offense. There are certainly going to be some bumps that this unit endures along the way given how productive Diggs and Davis were for Allen, so adding a veteran presence with a Super Bowl winning pedigree should help the team out at least a little bit in 2024 and beyond.</p><p>It’s been quite a career for Valdes-Scantling, as he’s gone from catching passes from Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers to doing the same thing with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Now, he will be joining another elite quarterback in Allen, with the hope being that he can stretch the field for him and connect on a few big plays throughout the season.</p><p>While MVS lands with the Bills here, they weren’t the only team interested in adding him to their offense. First, he can spread the field with his speed, opening things up for New York’s stud receiver Garrett Wilson. Valdez-Scantling has averaged 17.0 yards per reception in six NFL seasons and has 16 TD catches.</p><p>Second, he’s a much cheaper option in free agency than top-tier targets like Mike Evans and Calvin Ridley. That would allow the Jets the financial breadth to pursue another receiver, like Travis Boyd or Josh Reynolds. It’s imperative the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jets-new-york-sneaky-free-agents-sign" rel="noopener">Jets fill multiple holes</a> behind Wilson at wide receiver, as opposed to adding another star. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/biggest-needs-jets-must-address-2024-nfl-offseason" rel="noopener">Jets also have</a> a myriad of other issues to address on offense, notably their line.</p><p>Finally, Valdes-Scantling played four seasons with the Green Bay Packers and was a teammate with Aaron Rodgers. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-travis-kelce-chris-jones-join-patrick-mahomes-in-helping-free-up-cap-space" rel="noopener">Chiefs will save</a> $12 million of cap space.</p><p>With Chris Jones becoming a free agent, Kansas City seems determined to signing him to a long-term contract extension. Kansas City also used their franchise tag on L’Jarius Sneed and could trade him if the cornerback becomes too pricey in long-term contract negotiations. The Chiefs might need wide receivers, but Valdes-Scantling’s $12 million contract was too much for the team to stomach.</p><p>Especially considering the WR’s play throughout the 2023 season. Over 16 games, Scantling caught 21 passes for 315 yards and a touchdown. He was ninth on the team in receptions. While his yardage ranked fourth, it certainly isn’t the production Kansas City is hoping for from a $12 million player.</p><p>After Scantling’s release, the Chiefs now rank 17th in the league with almost $29 million available in cap space. However, signing Chris Jones to an extension would take a massive bite out of whatever is available. The defensive tackle’s play in their run to the Super Bowl may give Kansas City no choice.</p><p>Marquez Valdes-Scantling will walk away from the Chiefs with a championship ring of his own. He’ll now search free agency for another team that could offer him that opportunity. After Sunday’s road win over the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round, Mahomes’ playoff career numbers looked like this: 13-3 record, 4,561 yards, 38 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 443 rushing yards, and 5 rushing touchdowns, but this game in chilly Buffalo, New York was the first time Mahomes went into a hostile environment in the postseason. Those other fifteen games, Mahomes was playing in the friendly confines of Arrowhead Stadium or at the neutral site location of the Super Bowl. But heading into Sunday, Mahomes was chomping at the bit for the chance to experience the pressure and stakes of a road playoff game.</p><p>“He was the biggest advocate of anyone to go on the road and play. He was all for it. He wanted it,” Mahomes’ teammate Marquez Valdes-Scantling <a href="https://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/sam-mcdowell/article284502720.html" rel="noopener">said after the game</a>, per Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star. “He’s been the good guy of the league for awhile now, but he plays it’s cool — he loved being the villain.”</p><h2>“You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” <i><br>–</i>Harvey Dent<i>, The Dark Knight</i></h2><p>It was not too long ago when it had become clear that Patrick Mahomes had overtaken Tom Brady and become the undisputed face of the National Football League. The Chiefs quarterback represented everything that the league could’ve wanted out of its marquee star: Mahomes was young, exciting, innovative, and hyper-competitive. He managed to stay out of trouble of any sort off the field and on the field he was making the game fun for the younger fanbase that the league was trying to attract in the era where attention spans are diminishing thanks to a social media epidemic that nobody is talking enough about. Mahomes had everything, and in his first five seasons as the Chiefs starting QB, Kansas City made the AFC Championship Game five times, made three trips to the Super Bowl, and hoisted the Lombardi Trophy twice.</p><p>It was at that point, when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl last February in a thriller over the Philadelphia Eagles, Patrick Mahomes had lived too long as the hero. He was now The Villain.</p><p>It’s understandable that Mahomes would be the villain while playing in Buffalo. Just about any great player who is in the prime of their career is bound to be serenaded by a chorus of boos when they’re playing a road game, and I know from first hand experience as someone who has gone to Buffalo rooting for a Bills opponent, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-patrick-mahomes-drilled-snowballs-dejected-bills-fans-epic-win">those fans are <i>not kind</i></a> — even if you’re a twelve year old kid who was wearing Bears apparel hoping to see Chicago get a win. But Mahomes’ villainy is not exclusive to road venues.</p><p>Patrick Mahomes is treated differently than he once was. While analysts still marvel at Mahomes’ uncanny ability to make throws from impossible angles and extend plays, now there’s pushback on that sentiment. Every time a non-Mahomes quarterback makes a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-patrick-mahomes-ridiculous-underhand-touchdown">“Mahomes-esque” throw</a> — you know the kind I’m talking about — and doesn’t get the proper credit for it in the moment, you’re bound to see someone complaining on Twitter about how if it were Patrick Mahomes who made that throw, the announcers would be losing their minds in the aftermath of the play.</p><p>There’s also plenty of potentially warranted pushback regarding how Mahomes is officiated differently than most other quarterbacks in the league. As a fan of the Chicago Bears who has watched Justin Fields play an entire season without drawing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bears-qb-justin-fields-victim-of-yet-another-missed-call-after-getting-crushed-late-by-2-falcons">a single personal foul penalty</a>, I know firsthand how frustrating this could be. But this isn’t Patrick Mahomes’ fault. I’ll continue to blame the incompetent officials until they start getting it right.</p><p>It’s also not Patrick Mahomes’ fault that all of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/taylor-swift-hilarious-reaction-pissing-off-fans-by-attending-travis-kelce-chiefs-games">Dads, Brads and Chads</a> out there decided that Taylor Swift’s presence at Kansas City Chiefs games was the worst thing to happen to professional football in the 21st century. I don’t even blame Mahomes for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-patrick-mahomes-andy-reid-fined-150000-combined-after-fiasco-vs-bills">losing his mind</a> earlier in the season when the Chiefs (rightfully) were penalized on a potential game-winning play against Buffalo because <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-image-kadarius-toney-offside-travis-kelce-lateral-td">Kadarius Toney was lined up offsides</a>. I played both football and basketball growing up, and I’d be a stone cold liar if I said I never got caught up in the moment and freaked the F out in the aftermath of a loss.</p><p>The only thing Patrick Mahomes is guilty of is being so damn good that nearly every non-Chiefs fanbase decided that from here on out that this team is public enemy number one. Kansas City is the modern-day NFL equivalent of the 90’s New York Yankees, 00’s Duke Basketball, or 2010-14 Miami Heat, and Mahomes is the poster boy of this perceived “evil,” like Derek Jeter, J.J. Redick, and LeBron James once were.</p><p>My advice to Mahomes would be to embrace the villain role a little more. You lived the life of the hero, now you can make a serious killing as the NFL’s primary villain — no pun intended. To say that he had a forgettable night would be a huge understatement. Justin Watson paced the Chiefs with 53 receiving yards and a touchdown on five receptions and 11 targets, while Travis Kelce had 44 receiving yards and a score on seven catches and nine targets.</p><p>Nevertheless, the Chiefs don’t have to sound the alarm.
