Worse still, injuries were piling up in Indianapolis. Quarterback Anthony Richardson was hurt the week prior, giving way to veteran passer Joe Flacco. Running back Jonathan Taylor also got banged up in Week 4 and was forced to miss last Sunday against the Jaguars. And wide receiver <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-michael-pittman-jr-expected-to-miss-multiple-weeks-with-injury">Michael Pittman was expected to miss multiple games</a> after suffering a back injury in Week 5.</p><p>The Colts stopped short of placing Pittman on the injured reserve. And, incredibly, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-michael-pittman-jr-complete-180-amid-injured-reserve-fears">Pittman pulled a complete 180</a> and returned to a full practice on Friday. Instead of missing four or more games, the fifth-year pro is expected to play against the Tennessee Titans in the Colts’ Week 6 matchup.</p><p>Pittman <a href="https://x.com/HolderStephen/status/1845259964245237911" rel="noopener">made the trip</a> to Nashville with the team and his odds of suiting up are good, according to ESPN’s Stephen Holder on X. The receiver is officially questionable but is “<a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1845266847303639074" rel="noopener">tracking to play</a> Sunday,” per Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz. It’s quite an unexpected turnaround as the Colts were anticipating being without Pittman for several weeks.</p><h2><b>Colts wideout Michael Pittman should play in Week 6</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Michael-Pittman.jpg"><figcaption>Marc Lebryk-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The good news continued for Indy as fellow wideout Josh Downs and second-year QB Anthony Richardson are also <a href="https://x.com/HolderStephen/status/1845259964245237911" rel="noopener">expected to play</a> against the Titans, according to Holder.</p><p>Richardson was knocked out of the Colts’ Week 4 game after taking some <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-anthony-richardson-leaves-game-steelers-big-hit">brutal hits from Pittsburgh Steelers defenders</a>. While Flacco filled in admirably, throwing for 359 yards and three touchdowns as he came close to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-joe-flaccos-heroics-catch-eye-kevin-durant">producing a heroic performance</a> against the Jaguars, Colts coach Shane Steichen confirmed that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-shane-steichen-stands-by-anthony-richardson-despite-joe-flaccos-strong-week-5-outing">Richardson would remain the team’s starter</a> when he is healthy enough to play. After making huge strides in his recovery, Richardson could return in Week 6.</p><p>The Colts’ positive injury updates did not extend to Taylor, however. Indy is coming off a tough 37-34 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Michael Pittman Jr. played in the Colts’ Week 5 matchup, but the rise of a serious injury will have him out of the lineup for a while.</p><p>Pittman is dealing with a back injury that is expected to <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1844130304245776841" rel="noopener">sideline him for multiple weeks</a>, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. Indianapolis has the option of moving him to the injured reserve, Schefter added.</p><p>Hopefully, Michael Pittman Jr. will undergo a safe and efficient recovery period during his hiatus.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-michael-pittman-jr-play-week-3-despite-back-calf-injuries">Pittman dealt with back and calf injuries</a> in late September, but he battled through the ailments and suited up for the Colts anyway. It is tough to see his condition progress to such a serious point, but on the bright side, he should be able to be able to come back stronger.</p><p>In Indy’s last game against the Jaguars, Pittman amassed 37 yards on five receptions. On the season, he has totaled 238 yards and one touchdown on 22 receptions.</p><p>In addition to Pittman, the Colts have missed the services of Anthony Richardson. Richardson has not played since Sep. 29 against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to an oblique injury. However, the good news is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-indy-mixed-bag-anthony-richardson-jonathan-taylor-injury-updates">Richardson practiced with the team</a> on Wednesday.</p><p>The Colts have deployed veteran quarterback Joe Flacco in place of the injured Richardson. Flacco amassed an impressive 359 yards and three TDs against the Jaguars on Sunday. Pittman had missed practice on Friday, although it was reported at the time that Indianapolis believed he would still be able to play on Sunday. Sure enough, when the final inactives list rolled out, Pittman wasn’t on it, indicating he’s <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1837878712332702175" rel="noopener">good to go</a> for this one.</p><p>So far this season, Pittman has been targeted a team-high 15 times and has recorded 7 catches for 52 yards. Despite being second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson’s most common target, Pittman has essentially taken a backseat to Alec Pierce through the first two games. Pierce, a third-year receiver out of Cincinnati, has 8 receptions, 181 yards, and 2 touchdowns, including a 60-yard catch off of a ridiculous Richardson throw that went viral.</p><p>Despite the relatively slow start — Pittman had 16 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown entering Week 3 last season — the large USC product seems destined for a big game with how often Richardson has looked his way. And if there ever were a day to have a big outing, today would be that day.</p><p>The Colts narrowly fell to the Houston Texans in Week 1 and then the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 despite Green Bay starting a backup quarterback. The back-to-back losses to begin the season is not only a poor start in general, but historically, it has not meant good things for Indy’s playoff chances.</p><p>Of the 22 previous seasons in which the Colts began the season with two losses, the team made the postseason just twice (1987 and 2014). Thankfully, they received some relatively good injury news related to one of their offensive starters.</p><p>Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. <a href="https://x.com/NateAtkins_/status/1837160390637097255" rel="noopener">is not practicing on Friday</a>, per Nate Atkins from IndyStar. Pittman Jr. is <a href="https://x.com/JoelAErickson/status/1837176031662264754" rel="noopener">dealing with both back and calf injuries</a>, per Joel A. Erickson of Indy Star. However, the Colts do not believe Pittman Jr. is in danger of missing Sunday’s clash with the Bears.</p><p>There are a few other Colts injury update from Friday. Braden Smith is dealing with some knee soreness, but he is expected to suit up on Sunday against the Bears.</p><p>Ryan Kelly did not practice on Friday due to a veteran rest day.</p><p>Finally, it appears that rookie <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-laiatu-latu-gets-positive-injury-update-deforest-buckner-goes-on-ir">Laiatu Latu will be a game-time decision after suffering a hip injury</a> in Week 2.</p><h2><b>Colts QB Anthony Richardson reveals how he won over the Colts locker room</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Anthony-Richardson-of-the-Colts.jpg"><figcaption>Tork Mason/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin</figcaption></figure><p>They may be struggling at the start of the season, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-anthony-richardson-reveals-won-over-indianapolis-locker-room">the Colts have not lost faith in QB Anthony Richardson</a>.</p><p>Richardson suffered a handful of early injuries in 2023 that prematurely ended his rookie campaign. That effectively makes this an extension of his rookie season.</p><p>Despite this, faith persists in the young QB. Richardson <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5780271/2024/09/20/anthony-richardson-colts-leader-bears/?source=emp_shared_article" rel="noopener">explained how he won over</a> the Colts locker room in an interview this week.</p><p>“I guess I show the team that I’m going to still be me regardless of what happened,” Richardson said, via The Athletic’s James Boyd. “We have a big play, of course, I’m going to celebrate. But that’s in the past. We gotta keep it pushing. We have a bad play, I have to think about it and recover, but it’s still in the past. You’ve just gotta make it work. Go out there and ball out regardless of what happened. I think (I’ve) showed that to the squad, and I feel like everybody’s rallying behind me.”</p><p>It is good to hear that everyone in Indianapolis already views Richardson as a leader on offense. But things ground to a halt in a loss to the Packers, leading receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to make a rough admission about the Colts’ offense.</p><p>Pittman didn’t exactly <a href="https://x.com/RomeovilleKid/status/1835412715856179495" rel="noopener">pull a punch</a>, according to a post on X by James Boyd of The Athletic.</p><p>“Michael Pittman, asked what the “missing ingredient” to the #Colts’ offense is right now: “I have no idea.”</p><h2>Colts WR Michael Pittman struggling with rest of offense</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Indianapolis-Colts-WR-Michael-Pittman.jpg"></figure><p>The Colts couldn’t get much going against the Packers’ defense in a 16-10 loss. Richardson seemed to be in the middle of the struggles, throwing a pair of bad interceptions. He also got tagged with a third pick when his last-play Hail Mary pass got snagged by the defense.</p><p>Richardson finished 17 of 34 for 204 yards and one touchdown. Making those numbers seem even worse, the supposed dual-threat quarterback carried only four times for 37 yards. None of those numbers will often be good enough for the Colts to make offensive noise this season.</p><p>Pittman said it’s back to <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2024/09/15/colts-packers-disastrous-performance-16-10-loss/75137121007/" rel="noopener">the drawing board</a> for the entire offense, according to indystar.com.</p><p>“We just didn’t execute,” Pittman said. “We’ve got to get our base plays because we can’t always rely on the big shots. We’ve got to find ways to get completions, positive runs, and stay on the field.”</p><p>Richardson said things didn’t go well from the get-go.</p><p>“We just started slow,” Richardson said. “It’s frustrating when you have a decent week of practice. You game plan a certain way. And then you get to the game, and some things are switched up and you adjust too late. We started off slow as a group and we definitely can’t do that, especially as an offense. We know we’re better than that, and it just hurts. Just losing, bro.”</p><p>Colts head coach Shane Steichen didn’t mince words. He said the buck stops with him, but all facets of the team need to improve.</p><p>“We got to get it fixed,” Steichen said. “It starts with myself. I’m the head coach. This not only gives Wayne a unique set of bragging rights among all Colts franchise legends, but given his status as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-bringing-back-reggie-wayne-in-his-first-coaching-role">wide receivers coach in Indianapolis</a>, it also means that he has a perspective on sustained excellence that every player on the Colts roster should be flocking toward him for.</p><p>One player specifically that Reggie Wayne has his eye on ahead of this season is Michael Pittman Jr., who overtook Wayne’s longtime teammate Marvin Harrison last year for the Colts record for most receptions by a player in their first four seasons with the team. Pittman also has 115 more receptions and over 500 more receiving yards than Reggie Wayne did during his first four seasons in Indianapolis. But the 26-year-old still has a long way to go before he catches either Wayne (14,345 yards) or Harrison (14,580 yards) atop the Colts all-time receiving yardage list. And in Reggie Wayne’s mind, he still has quite a ways to go before he proves himself to his teammates.</p><p>“We know you can play. We know you can ball. Let’s elevate our game to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5677183/2024/08/03/indianapolis-colts-receivers-pittman-mitchell-reggie-wayne/?source=user_shared_article" rel="noopener">a whole different stratosphere</a>,” Wayne said, per James Boyd of The Athletic. “Let’s get a ‘C’ on our chest. … I ain’t never seen someone making $25 million and they ain’t even captain. How does that work?”</p><p>It’s reasonable to believe that after four seasons with Indianapolis and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-michael-pittman-jr-agree-3-year-deal-71-million">a fresh new contract extension</a> that came in back in March, Michael Pittman Jr. <i>should </i>be one of the Colts captains in 2024. Wayne noted that Josh Downs, who set the Colts rookie record with 68 receptions last year, looks to “add something to his repertoire,” this season. He called rookie wideout Adonai Mitchell “an alpha” and “a dog.” He also noted that he believe Alec Pierce is the player he’s most excited about.</p><p>“The excitement that I’m feeling for Alec right now in this camp is like no other because, honestly, Alec ain’t never really had to compete,” Wayne said. “The guy has really never really hit his stride. I think this is his time.”</p><p>The X-factor for the Indianapolis Colts will be Anthony Richardson, their 2nd-year quarterback who saw a promising rookie season <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-anthony-richardson-final-decision-season-ending-shoulder-surgery">cut short last year</a>. He will make $70 million over those three years.</p><p>Before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-michael-pittman-jr-parris-campbells-immediate-reactions-71-5-million-deal" rel="noopener">Michael Pittman Jr. was</a> a star with the Colts, he was a star for the USC football team. Pittman Jr. had some big years with the Trojans, but none were bigger than his senior season. Pittman Jr. got better every season, and as a senior, he finished the year with 101 receptions for 1,275 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was one of the best WRs in college football.</p><p>Pittman Jr. was picked by the Colts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft and he has been in Indianapolis for his entire career. In year two, Pittman Jr. finished with over 1,000 yards receiving and he scored six touchdowns.</p><p>Pittman Jr. has now finished with over 1,000 yards receiving in two out of his four seasons with the Colts. He is a key WR on the team, and that was big for Indianapolis to lock him in with a new contract.</p><p>The Colts are going to be a fun team to watch next season. Re-signing Pittman was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-michael-pittman-jr-parris-campbells-immediate-reactions-71-5-million-deal" rel="noopener">pivotal for the Colts</a>, as he has become the team’s top wideout.</p><p>The 26-year-old hauled in 109 receptions for 1,152 yards and four touchdowns in 2023. At six-foot-four, Pittman is a physical receiver and a quality route runner, making him a quarterback-friendly target.</p><p>Indianapolis has a young quarterback in Anthony Richardson, who they need to build around. They selected him with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL  Draft as a quarterback with high potential.</p><p>Richardson <a href="https://www.colts.com/news/anthony-richardson-season-ending-shoulder-surgery-injury-update-2023" rel="noopener">appeared in only four games</a> as a rookie, completing 59.1 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and one interception. The 21-year-old also rushed for 136 yards and four touchdowns.</p><p>The dual-threat quarterback has a ton of potential with excellent arm strength and rushing ability. He needs to improve his accuracy so he can become a more efficient passer. When he makes that jump, it will unlock the offense’s full potential. Keeping Pittman in the long term will help maximize the development of Richardson.</p><p>With that said, let’s grade Pittman’s extension with the Colts.</p><h2><b>Colts’ Michael Pittman Jr. contract Grade: A-</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Colts-Michael-Pittman.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Pittman’s contract is WR1 money, and he has proven he can produce at a high level. While it’s a lot of dough, the Colts still have cap flexibility to add at other positions.</p><p>The contract structure is also incentive-based, meaning he could earn more by playing at a high level. Although Pittman isn’t a top-ten receiver in the league, he has the potential to become one. This is a very fair deal for both Indianapolis and Pittman.</p><p>Pittman has had many different quarterbacks during his tenure as a Colt. Pittman can finally grow a long-term connection with Richardson as the franchise QB. Richardson has the arm strength to get the ball downfield but struggles with accuracy.</p><p>Pittman has consistently produced throughout his four-year career with totals of 336 receptions for 3,662 yards and 15 touchdowns.</p><p>With the Pittman deal done, Indianapolis now needs to make some moves to improve its roster. Adding a talented <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-perfect-nfl-trade-indianapolis-must-complete-in-2024-offseason">wide receiver opposite of Pittman</a>, whether it’s via the draft, free agency, or a trade, would help their offense improve. This is a strong wide receiver draft class, which benefits the Colts.</p><p>Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze are the top three wideouts on the draft board, and Indianapolis could benefit from drafting one of them. A second receiver alongside Pittman could unlock Richardson’s full potential and allow Pittman and Jonathan Taylor to play at an even higher level.</p><p>At midseason, Taylor inked a three-year $42 million extension with the Colts.</p><p>The 25-year-old rushed for 741 yards and seven touchdowns in ten games. He hauled in 19 receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown. He will be a key part of their offensive core moving forward.</p><p>A second receiver alongside Pittman could unlock Richardson’s full potential and allow Pittman and Taylor to play at an even higher level.</p><p>The Colts are off to a great start <a href="https://coltswire.usatoday.com/lists/colts-2024-nfl-free-agency-tracker-key-signings-live-updates/">in free agency</a> by extending their star wideout. It will be crucial to make more moves as the AFC is a very competitive conference. After the news dropped, Pittman quote tweeted <a href="https://twitter.com/Schultz_Report/status/1767213742817783965" rel="noopener">with two words</a>: ‘Staying Home.’</p><p>Pittman is fresh off a 1,152-yard season with four touchdowns on 109 receptions (a career-high) and has two 1,000-yard campaigns in four seasons in the NFL. After being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft after a productive career with the USC Trojans, Pittman has become the go-to wide receiver for the Colts.</p><p>He now remains opposite Josh Downs, so this looks to be a dangerous offense for the Colts. Now guaranteed to be on the roster for at least the 2024 season, the franchise tag gives the Colts a bit more time to find a deal that works with all parties.</p><p>After the 2023 campaign, the Colts’ franchise decision makes clear sense. Pittman set new career-highs in receptions (109) and receiving yards (1,152) while bringing in four touchdown grabs. When Richardson returns from injury, he will be looking for Pittman and early and often down field.</p><p>While Pittman burst onto the scene in 2023, he has been a reliable weapon for the Colts since entering the league in 2020. Over 62 career games, Pittman has caught 336 passes for 3,662 yards and 15 touchdowns.</p><p>The franchise tag does not eliminate Michael Pittman from remaining with the Colts for the foreseeable future. It simply guarantees his contract and spot on the roster for the 2024 season. However, at the NFL Combine, Colts general manager Chris Ballard gave a <a href="https://twitter.com/NateAtkins_/status/1762910295243039089" rel="noopener">big update</a> on the status surrounding wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., per Nate Atkins of The Indy Star.</p><p>‘Colts GM Chris Ballard said he’s in talks with Michael Pittman Jr. on a long-term deal, but he said it’s possible they could use the franchise tag if they’re not able to reach a deal.’</p><p>That’s certainly good news for the Colts as Pittman is a huge part of the offense and a terrific weapon for Anthony Richardson. When the franchise tag window opened, the Colts didn’t use it on him, which brought a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-micahael-pittman-jr-shares-wholesome-post-first-day-franchise-tag-eligibility" rel="noopener">reaction from Pittman.</a></p><p>Pittman was a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL raft and caught just 40 passes for 503 yards in his rookie season. After that, he posted 1,000-yard campaigns in two of the next three years, with the 2022 season the only one without 1,000 yards (he had 925 on 99 receptions). In 2023, Pittman had a career-high 109 catches for 1,152 yards and four scores as he became the go-to wide receiver for the Colts.</p><p>If the Colts can keep Pittman in town on a long-term deal, it would give them a dangerous 1-2 punch at WR with Josh Downs emerging in his rookie year this past season. The Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs have the second-best odds at +600, while the New York Jets slot in at +900.</p><p>Landing Pittman Jr. would<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/best-players-colts-must-re-sign-in-2024-nfl-free-agency" rel="noopener"> be a coup</a> for the Titans. He did not make a Pro Bowl or an All-Pro team, but there were not many wide receivers who played better than Pittman Jr. did this season. He finished fourth among wide receivers in receptions and fifth in the entire NFL with 109 of them. Only CeeDee Lamb (135), Tyreek Hill (119), Amon-Ra St. Brown (119), and Evan Engram (114) caught more balls than Pittman did this season.</p><p>With or without Pittman Jr., the Titans are looking to revamp their offense this season. After letting Mike Vrabel go, the team hired for Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their new head coach.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/titans-news-brian-callahan-reveals-coaching-philosophy-could-unlock-will-levis" rel="noopener">Part of Callahan’s coaching career</a> was being an offensive assistant with the Denver Broncos from 2010-2015 where he was around Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. As they prepare for their Week 17 clash against the Las Vegas Raiders, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-michael-pittman-jr-braden-smith-positive-practice-updates-week-17" rel="noopener">Colts received a mixed bag</a> injury update on offense.</p><p>Star wide receiver Michael Pittman <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1740796534554595637" rel="noopener">has been cleared</a> from his concussion and will play in Week 17. He leads the team in receptions (99), yards (1,062) and touchdowns (4). Moss was key for the Colts while Jonathan Taylor worked through injury/contract problems. He still leads the team with 764 rushing yards and is tied with Taylor in scoring five touchdowns.</p><p>With Moss out, the Colts will be relying on Taylor to handle the rock in the run game. Now fully cleared from concussion, Pittman will return to his active role as Indianapolis’ WR1.</p><p>The Colts have been led by backup quarterback Gardner Minshew for most of the season. Rookie Anthony Richardson suffered a devastating shoulder injury after just four games. They’ve held their own even with Minshew, ranking 15th in the league in total offense, averaging 334.4 yards per game.</p><p>Players like Michael Pittman and Zack Moss have been crucial in keeping the Colts afloat during their rocky season. While Pittman will be able to suit up, Moss will be watching from the sidelines. You can catch all of his sports-related musings on Twitter at @twcrean.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>As the Indianapolis Colts head into a crucial Week 17 showdown with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raiders-news-davante-adams-antonio-pierce-after-chiefs-win" rel="noopener">the Las Vegas Raiders</a>, the team got injury updates on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-michael-pittman-zack-moss-injury-updates">wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.</a> and offensive tackle Braden Smith, who both seem like they are trending toward playing on Sunday.</p><p>“This is not a declarative statement about their statuses for Sunday, but WR Michael Pittman Jr. (concussion) and RT Braden Smith (knee) were very active in today’s practice,” ESPN Colts reporter Stephen Holder <a href="https://twitter.com/HolderStephen/status/1740442519987703917" rel="noopener">shared on Thursday</a>. “Smith looked like a guy ready to play IMO.”</p><p>These Colts injury updates are huge for the team, as Pittman is the team’s leading pass-catcher with 99 grabs for 1,062 yards on the season, and Smith is a key piece of the offense, starting all eight games he’s been healthy for this season.</p><p>The Colts need to win in Week 17 against the Raiders to keep pace or even surpass their AFC South competition, as Indianapolis, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Houston Texans all have matching 8-7 records heading into the final two games of the regular season.</p><h2><b>Colts playoff scenarios</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Jonathan_Taylor_Michael_Pittman_Jr._set_to_play_Week_16_vs._Falcons.webp"></figure><p>The Colts, Texans, and Jaguars may have the same records now, but the season won’t finish that way.
