In a shocking turn of events, the Indianapolis Colts brought back the 44-year-old veteran for one more game in the wake of their quarterback injuries. Rivers played decently, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-philip-rivers-tosses-first-td-return-josh-downs">definitely way above what many expected from a mid-40s</a> retired player playing in his first game in five years. Unfortunately, the Colts weren’t able to get the win.</p><p>For Rivers, though, this game was more than just the result. Before coming back to the NFL for the Colts, Rivers was coaching at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama. The veteran quarterback <a href="https://x.com/WISHNews8/status/2000370127033020821" rel="noopener">was emotional talking about this game</a> and how it could help inspire not only his players, but other young athletes as well.</p><p>“I was enjoying myself kind of down there being coach in South Alabama, but these kinds of things don’t come up, but obviously this doesn’t come up every day,” Rivers said. “But I think maybe, you know, maybe, maybe it will, I don’t know, inspire or teach, you know, not to run or be scared of what may or may not happen, you know, hopefully, you know, certainly I think of my sons and those ballplayers, you know, that I’m in charge of at the school that they’ll say like, ‘crap, Coach wasn’t scared.'”</p><p>Rivers completed 18 of his 27 passes for 120 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception.<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-philip-rivers-makes-disappointed-confession-improbable-return"> It’s certainly not a gaudy statline for most quarterbacks.</a> Considering the fact that the Colts worked Rivers out just a week ago and he hasn’t played competitively in five years AND he’s 44 years old, and that statline looks impressive. The fact that he was able to stand there and lead Indy down the field is impressive.</p><p>The Colts had the perfect chance to give Rivers the magical return he deserves. He returned to the franchise after starting quarterback Daniel Jones tore his Achilles in Week 14. With the team’s quarterback depth managing through injuries, Rivers made the big decision to come out of retirement and help the team out amid a playoff push.</p><p>The veteran quarterback <a href="https://x.com/WISHNews8/status/2000367572600885324" rel="noopener">reflected on his return to the field</a> after the game, via WISH-TV News. He was grateful to return to the league where he got to be a star for many years but expressed disappointment that the Colts couldn’t come away with the win.</p><p>“Running out for warmups and all that and out there for the anthem and as the game just got going, I was just thankful,” Rivers said. “Grateful that I was out there, and it was a blast. It was a blast, but obviously the emotions now are disappointment, right? This isn’t about me. We had a team that was scrapping like crazy to try to stay alive and get in the postseason. So obviously we’re all disappointed. However, Seattle fought back as its special teams unit was the star of the game down the stretch.</p><p>Rivers was decent in his first game in five years but will have room for improvement in the upcoming weeks. He completed 18 passes out of 27 attempts for 120 yards and a touchdown and an interception.</p><p>Jonathan Taylor led the rushing attack with 25 carries for 87 yards while recording three catches for 14 yards. Josh Downs had three receptions for 13 yards and a touchdown, while Ameer Abdullah caught five passes for 32 yards.</p><p>Indianapolis fell to an 8-6 record on the season, holding the third spot in the AFC South Division standings. They are above the Tennessee Titans while trailing the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. In terms of the AFC standings, they sit at eighth place. He’s also only been sacked once, as the Colts’ offensive line is protecting him rather well against a tenacious Seahawks defense.</p><p>The last time Philip Rivers took the field was in the 2020-21 season. He hadn’t played in an NFL game for nearly five years before Indianapolis signed him to the roster. The Colts were in a tough spot due to the list of injuries in the quarterback room. So, Rivers came in to help the club out in the final stretch of the regular season.</p><p>Luckily, the eight-time Pro Bowler didn’t come into Indy completely blind. It’s said that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-mad-scramble-philip-rivers-high-school-players-learn-about-unretirement" rel="noopener">Philip Rivers was running the same offense</a> the Colts use while coaching his son’s high school football team. So, Philip Rivers is very well adjusted to the system and was able to be a plug-and-play almost immediately.</p><p>This will be Philip Rivers’ 18th season in his career. The Colts are doing everything they can to remain in playoff contention. However, the team is on the outside looking in. Faced with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-injury-timeline-achilles-surgery">season-ending injury to Daniel Jones</a>, the Indianapolis Colts <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-philip-rivers-starting-seahawks">decided to turn to Rivers for their Week 15 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks</a>.</p><p>Him stepping foot on the gridiron made for one of the most improbable returns in NFL history. But for however unlikely his return to starting quarterback may be, Rivers <a href="https://x.com/zkeefer/status/2000316350791586110" rel="noopener">isn’t giving up his opportunity</a>, via Zeefer of The Athletic.</p><p>“I love the game,” Rivers said. “I got an opportunity. And that’s just how I remember it. I’m excited to be a teammate again.”</p><p>At 8-5, the Colts are still in the thick of the playoff hunt. They decided that their best option for success was getting Rivers out of retirement. He did spend that 2020 season with Indianapolis an he has a long history playing for head coach Shane Steichen. It has been a long layoff, but the franchise at least feels confident in Rivers’ ability to come back.</p><p>By playing football again, the quarterback has set back his Hall of Fame eligibility by five years. However, he clearly isn’t done with the sport. When the Colts called, Rivers couldn’t turn down the opportunity.</p><p>He’ll now be entering his 18th season in the NFL. He enters his time with the Colts having thrown for 63,440 yards and 421 touchdowns. Furthermore, he is a eight-time Pro Bowler and the 2013 Comeback Player of the Year.</p><p>Rivers still has plenty of prove to stay the Colts starting quarterback. The big news for this game is the fact that the Colts are expected to start 44 year-old <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-mad-scramble-philip-rivers-high-school-players-learn-about-unretirement">quarterback Philip Rivers</a>, per Stephen Holder of ESPN, after sigining him to their practice squad earlier this week.</p><p>Many fans were shocked when it was announced that Rivers would be joining the team this week, five years after his retirement, and now, <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/philip-rivers-hs-football-team-excited-for-qb-s-start-going-to-be-awesome-to-watch?campaign=Twitter_atn" rel="noopener">more is being revealed</a> about how exactly that initial workout came to be.</p><p>“When Rivers learned he had to work out for Indy, he needed cleats. So he reached into his trophy case (literally) and grabbed his old Reeboks from more than 10 years ago,” reported NFL insider Ian Rapoport on NFL.com.</p><p>The Colts were in dire need of a quarterback last week when it was announced that starting quarterback Daniel Jones would be out for the season due to a torn Achilles injury he suffered last Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Meanwhile, backup Riley Leonard was also dealing with an injury of his own, and former first round pick Anthony Richardson had already been ruled out for the season, so it was no surprise that the Colts took desperate measures to make sure they had someone on the field for Sunday’s game against Seattle.</p><p>Still, even then, few could have seen a Rivers comeback on the horizon, five years after he placed his last game, also for the Colts, during the 2020-21 season.</p><p>The Seahawks’ defense doesn’t exactly present a welcoming opportunity for Rivers to reintroduce himself on the NFL stage, but it will certainly be interesting, if nothing else, to see how it goes.</p><p>The Colts and Seahawks are slated to kick things off on Sunday at 4:25 pm ET.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Indianapolis <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-indianapolis-makes-philip-rivers-signing-official">signed veteran QB Philip Rivers out of retirement</a> to replace <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-tore-achilles-in-loss-to-jaguars">Daniel Jones after his season-ending Achilles injury</a>. The 44-year-old quarterback is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-philip-rivers-starting-seahawks">set to start for the Colts during Week 15</a> and nobody is more excited about it than his high school players.</p><p>Rivers has been the <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/philip-rivers-hs-football-team-excited-for-qb-s-start-going-to-be-awesome-to-watch" rel="noopener">head football coach at St. Michael Catholic</a> in Alabama. Some of Rivers’ high school players spoke with NFL.com this week about the excitement surrounding their coach’s NFL return.</p><p>One student described the mad scramble that students made to their in-school computers as they waited to hear if Rivers would sign with the Colts.</p><p>“We were checking updates all day in school, going on Google, just typing in his name about every 10 minutes,” Tucker Tomlinson, a senior receiver for the St. Michael Catholic Cardinals, told NFL.com. “That was the worst part. Having to refresh all the news pages to see what we can find.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-what-happened-at-philip-rivers-workout">Rivers worked out with the Colts</a> on Monday night, leading to strong speculation heading into Tuesday that he would join the team. Then the news finally broke on Tuesday afternoon.</p><p>“When we finally saw it, we’re like, ‘Oh my God, this is real,'” Tomlinson said by phone this week. “That’s something I would never expect. … Reports like that come out all the time, you know, it’s just crap. You see it, you’re just like, that’s funny. Let me joke with (his son) Gunner about it. This time seemed different, and it really came into fruition.”</p><p>Rivers’ son Gunner is the starting quarterback for St. Michael Catholic, and one of the nation’s top prospects.</p><p>He tried to keep his father’s fate a secret, but his classmates could easily tell that something was up.</p><p>“He definitely tried to keep it pretty close to the chest,” Tomlinson said. “But he’s got a tell. His face gets all red and he didn’t know how to handle it. It was pretty funny.”</p><p>It will be fascinating to see how well Rivers can play against a tough Seahawks defense. Adam Schefter <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/2000212209704522173" rel="noopener">poured cold water</a> on that talk, reporting on X that Ward has no intention of retiring despite being shut down and placed on IR.</p><p>According to Schefter, Ward actually wanted to keep playing and hoped to avoid the injured reserve move altogether, but the organization stepped in and overruled him out of caution.</p><p>It’s a revealing split between a player who clearly still loves competing and a front office that has to think long term about both health and liability. Three concussions in one year is serious territory, and the Colts were never going to let a veteran cornerback rush himself back just because the depth chart looks thin.</p><p>And also, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-injury-timeline-achilles-surgery">Jones injury still looms large over everything</a>. The team went all-in on the 2025 season, trading two first-round picks for All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. But the Colts’ lost three straight games following their Week 11 bye. And the team’s playoff hopes took a massive hit when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-tore-achilles-in-loss-to-jaguars">Daniel Jones tore his Achilles</a> last Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.</p><p>While the Colts haven’t committed to Jones beyond this season, the Gardner trade signaled that the team believed it had found its long-term starter. But Jones’ injury has historically come with a lengthy recovery time, jeopardizing not just this season but the 2026 campaign as well.</p><p>However, the Colts’ <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1999954291013153204" rel="noopener">received some positive news</a> following Jones’ surgery earlier this week. The veteran quarterback was given a 6-8 month recovery timeline, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. That would allow Jones to be medically cleared for training camp next year.</p><h2><b>Daniel Jones could return for the start of next season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Daniel-Jones-2_fcce5f.jpg"><figcaption>Robert Goddin-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Jones’ post-surgery update is the best-case scenario for the Colts. Can the team hang its hopes on a speedy recovery? And, if Jones can return to the field in time for the start of next season, will he play well? Achilles tears are notorious for sapping quarterbacks’ mobility post recovery. Many passers have struggled to return to form after the injury. And Jones is a quarterback whose mobility, at least in part, is tied to his effectiveness.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-rumors-daniel-jones-injury-franchise-changing-contract-decision">Colts could franchise tag Jones</a> next season. But the price for 2026 is expected to reach $46 million, which is steep for a QB less than a year removed from such a devastating injury.</p><p>The problem is, the team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/daniel-jones-injury-spells-doom-colts-sauce-gardner-gamble">mortgaged its future with the Gardner trade</a>. The Colts gave up their first-round picks for 2026 and 2027. The transaction was shocking to say the least, and to accommodate the 17-year veteran, the Colts made a <a href="https://x.com/mchappell51/status/1999903999055852018?s=20" rel="noopener">plethora of roster moves</a> ahead of a pivotal Week 15 matchup vs. the Seattle Seahawks. </p><p>On Saturday, Indianapolis officially announced the signing of Rivers to the active roster, according to Mike Chappell of Fox59. The team also placed right tackle Braden Smith on injured reserve and elevated wide receiver Coleman Owen and defensive tackle Chris Wormley from the practice squad.</p><p>While the Rivers signing was expected, Smith’s placement on injured reserve is a big blow to the Colts offense, especially with Rivers lack of mobility plaguing the pocket. </p><p>Smith has been a mainstay in the Colts’ lineup since being drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. In 13 games, Smith <a href="https://premium.pff.com/nfl/positions/2025/REGPO/offense-blocking?position=T,G,C&amp;team=14" rel="noopener">posted a well-above-average 71.9 pass-blocking grade</a>, per Pro Football Focus.
