It was a decision that led Carr away from a $30 million salary. On Thursday, he finally opened up about why he chose to retire from the league.</p><p>During a guest appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” the 34-year-old former quarterback admitted that it <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOHoIJ7FPYY&amp;t=3s" rel="noopener">wasn’t an easy decision</a>. However, it appears that his wife, Heather Neel, played a key part in helping Derek Carr choose to retire. Carr claimed that she would have to help him out of bed on Monday mornings because he couldn’t walk after games.</p><p>“It wasn’t easy, I promise,” said Derek Carr. “It’s easy to make a comment and just say, ‘Yeah, it is what it is.’ But it wasn’t. It was hard. It was really hard. When I talked to my wife, you know, she was ready for me to be done whenever I was ready, you know, she’s amazing. She saw, honestly, things that no one else saw. You know, waking up on Monday mornings, and I can’t walk. You know, waking up on Monday mornings, and I have to call her to come in the room to help me get out of bed, you know. So she was done. She was like, ‘I’m good.’ You know, 11 years is enough.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>In the interview, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-derek-carr-reason-turning-down-30-million">Derek Carr also claims that his shoulder injury</a> made it easier to walk away from a $30 million salary, which is something he admitted back in June. Although it is a ton of money, the four-time Pro Bowler just knew that he wasn’t going to be ready to go for the Saints in the 2025-26 season.</p><p>“To say no to the money part of it, I had to die to myself on that one,” admitted Carr. “You know, I had to be like, ‘What is the right thing to do?’ because on the inside, you’re like, ‘It’s easy. ‘I’ll just make that money and go.’ But it just wasn’t right because I wasn’t ready.”</p><p>Derek Carr played 11 seasons in the NFL. Nine of those were with the Las Vegas Raiders franchise, and his final two years were with the Saints. The Saints got off to a slow start against the Arizona Cardinals, but they did stage a late comeback before falling short 20-13.</p><p>Despite the loss, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-spencer-rattler-kellen-moore-endorsement">Spencer Rattler looked like a competent NFL quarterback</a> at the very least, which can give fans optimism that New Orleans can at least be better than a dumpster fire this season. His top weapon, wide receiver Chris Olave, is also healthy to start this season, which is something that hasn’t always been the case during his career.</p><p>Olave did have an injury scare in Week 1 after taking a hard hit after the catch, where he was sent off to the medical tent. He played in just eight games in 2024 after a very productive first two seasons, so his health will be something to watch for in New Orleans all season long.</p><p>When Olave is healthy, he is one of the top young wide receivers in the NFL. In his first two seasons, he caught 159 balls and scored nine touchdowns while eclipsing 1,000 in each of those seasons. Despite a late rally led by Spencer Rattler, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-most-to-blame-for-underwhelming-week-1-loss-to-cardinals">Saints couldn’t quite get in the end zone</a> at the end of the game and now sit at 0-1 heading into Week 2.</p><p>Now, the Saints will try to get into the win column on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, who are a little beat up coming off of their season-opening win against the Seattle Seahawks. The Niners recently placed star tight end George Kittle on injured reserve, and now quarterback <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-declares-brock-purdy-long-shot-vs-saints">Brock Purdy is dealing with a pair of injuries that make him a “long-shot”</a> to play in Week 2.</p><p>The Saints are <a href="https://x.com/DMRussini/status/1965875074428456983" rel="noopener">well aware of that</a> and have been preparing for backup quarterback Mac Jones all week long, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.</p><p>“Per source, the Saints have been preparing all week for Mac Jones to be the 49ers’ starter Sunday in New Orleans,” Russini reported on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Jones doesn’t provide the same ability to play off-script or create plays out of structure that Purdy does, but he absolutely has the skillset to run Kyle Shanahan’s offense for a week or two if needed. Shanahan excels at scheming players open, which should play into Jones’ hands as someone who can get the ball out on time.</p><p>Still, this should open up opportunities for the New Orleans pass rush to get home against a 49ers offensive line that struggled at times against the Seahawks’ front in Week 1. Seattle has more talent on the defensive line than New Orleans does, but Jones will not be able to escape the pocket in the same way Purdy can.</p><p>New Orleans will also now have a new sense of focus on slowing down Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers running game. If that happens, that could very well change things for the Niners. What once was a game many predicted would be a blowout could be closer than people thought.</p><p>These 49ers-Saints bold predictions will go over the status of these injuries, as well as others who benefit from them. Additionally, it will discuss past results and how they relate to this 49ers vs. Saints game. It’s time for a 49ers-Saints Week 2 preview, featuring three bold predictions that could come true this weekend.</p><h2><b>Jauan Jennings has eight receptions for 100 yards</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-jauan-jennings-shoulder-positive-update-week-2-saints">Jennings got positive injury news</a> after sustaining a shoulder injury. Because of this, it opens up the chance for Jennings to play this weekend. Ricky Pearsall was the top receiver not named Christian McCaffrey in Week 1, garnering four receptions on seven targets for 108 yards. Conversely, Jennings only had two catches on five targets for 16 yards. But that could be an aberration, and this could be a chance for Jennings to make his mark.</p><p>The New Orleans defense was decent against the Arizona Cardinals’ receivers in Week 1. But with Kittle out, the Niners will likely lean more on their receivers. That means that Jennings could get his chance. If New Orleans does everything it can to contain McCaffrey and Pearsall, it could help Jennings. San Francisco will want to get him involved, especially as a way to give Jones a possible target to throw to.</p><p>Jennings has proven in the past that he can carry the Niners, as he did when he had 11 receptions for 175 yards against the Los Angeles Rams last season. He also had three games of 90 or more yards. This could be the week he hits 100 for the second time.</p><h2><b>The 49ers’ defense stuffs Alvin Kamara</b></h2><p>The Niners did everything they could to improve their run defense in the offseason. So far, the results look good, as they held Zach Charbonnet to 12 rushes for 47 yards and Kenneth Walker III to 10 rushes for 20 yards. This Niners’ defense looks legitimate once again.</p><p>Kamara has not had much success against the Niners. Remarkably, he has rushed 28 times for only 53 yards, averaging 1.9 yards per carry in the collective games. Although Kamara has had more success through the air (17 receptions for 138 yards in his career), it is not enough to warrant consideration.</p><p>Kamara rushed 11 times for 45 yards and a touchdown while catching both targets for 12 yards in Week 1 against the Cards. Yet, the Niners’ defense will close the gaps and force quarterback Spencer Rattler to look for other options. This is going to be a tough week for Kamara on the ground, and he will likely try to make up for it through the air.</p><h2><b>The 49ers-Saints game is low scoring and close</b></h2><p>As noted before, San Francisco is the favorite. Yet, this game feels like the ultimate trap. With all the injuries and the game being in New Orleans, nothing is set in stone. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-san-francisco-eddy-pineiro-replace-jake-moody">Niners just signed Eddy Pineiro to be their new kicker</a> after releasing Jake Moody. The good news is that this game will be in a dome, so the weather will have zero effect.</p><p>The Niners might struggle to get into the end zone if Jones ends up starting. While Jones is a serviceable backup, it’s difficult to generate any offense in the NFL if you are missing most of your starters. Yes, McCaffrey is still there, but the Niners don’t have many other reliable options at the moment, at least not proven ones. All the injuries and ailments point to this game becoming a defensive slugfest. Significantly, there is a chance that the San Francisco defense might score more than the offense.</p><p>The Niners won 17-13 in Week 1 with many of their starters out, but with Purdy and Kittle playing. If both are out, this showdown in Week 2 could be similar, if not worse, offensively. The Niners might be able to score a touchdown. However, they will have a hard time consistently generating any offense unless their wide receivers step up, and San Francisco can move the chains consistently. This team is going to have more downs than ups, and their Week 1 matchup at home against the Arizona Cardinals could take a turn for the worse.</p><p>Edge rusher <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-chase-young-leaves-saints-practice-with-calf-injury-before-week-1">Chase Young left practice with a calf injury</a> and has now been <a href="https://x.com/MikeGarafolo/status/1964032362213253273" rel="noopener">reported as OUT</a> against the Cardinals, according to Moore.</p><p>Young was one of the most prized defensive prospects entering the NFL of all time. His career at Ohio State was legendary, and his size and skill anticipated him being one of the league’s best players. That is why he was drafted second overall by the Washington Commanders (Football Team at the time).</p><p>Unfortunately, that has not been the case since he entered the league. He has never gotten more than 7.5 sacks in a season, which was his rookie season and between two teams in 2023. In 2024, Young played in all 17 games for the first time in his career. He registered 5.5 sacks and 31 total tackles. If Young can build upon that season, he can get right back into the conversation as one of the best young edge rushers. He is only 26 years old.</p><p>The hope is that the calf injury is not serious and he is back at practice next week.</p><p>Kellen Moore is the former offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles and was a big reason for their success last season, winning the Super Bowl. Because of what happened before the first snap of the game between Eagles defensive star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-rumors-why-jalen-carter-not-suspended-spitting-dak-prescott">Jalen Carter and Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott</a>, Moore addressed the situation to the Saints about unsportsmanlike conduct.</p><p>“That was certainly one of the things we had to address.”</p><p>The Cardinals and Saints meet in New Orleans on Sunday. Some believe that Dart will eventually supplant Wilson at some point in the 2025 season. However, neither Rattler nor Shough comes even close to comparing to either Wilson or Dart.</p><p>Carr’s retirement forced the Saints into what appears to be an obvious rebuild year. The injury is not considered serious,” Schultz said.</p><p>The Saints dodge a significant loss here. As Young established himself as a reliable starter on the defensive line. But he’s already playing for his second NFL team after hearing his name called during April’s NFL Draft.</p><p>“Drafted in the sixth round by the Las Vegas Raiders, Mellott was waived last week after practicing at receiver in camp. Now, the versatile playmaker heads to the home of Taysom Hill,” Pelissero posted on X (formerly Twitter). </p><p>The day three choice could now be inserted as the “Hill” for Kellen Moore ahead of Sunday’s opener.</p><h2><b>Saints’ new potential ‘Taysom Hill’ brings own versatility </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Hill-at-practice.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Mellott entered the league as a Football Bowl Subdivision (FCS) star out of Montana State.</p><p>He rose as a beloved talent in Bozeman. He claimed 33 total victories (<a href="https://msubobcats.com/sports/football/roster/tommy-mellott/6500" rel="noopener">second most in school history</a>). Plus became the school’s first-ever Walter Payton Award winner — which honors the best player at the FCS level.</p><p>Mellott went off in the Bobcats offense — tallying 5,810 passing yards with 3,523 rushing. He combined for 96 total touchdowns running and throwing. <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/tommy-mellott/32004d45-4c42-1666-4887-888399e883b8" rel="noopener">The conversation pre-draft centered on</a> Mellott giving another position to try.</p><p>“There have been quarterback-to-receiver conversions in the NFL before and Mellott might be the next in line. He’s been a winner and an extremely productive dual-threat quarterback, but he doesn’t have the size or arm talent needed to continue at that position in the NFL,” wrote NFL Network draft analyst Lance Zierlein.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/raiders-news-tom-brady-selects-college-qb-julian-edelman-comp">Tom Brady witnessed a lot of Julian Edelman in scouting Mellott</a>.
