Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After watching <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-rhamondre-stevenson-disappointed-take-fumbling-issues">Rhamondre Stevenson fumbling the ball four times</a> in as many weeks for the New England Patriots in 2024, <i>something</i> had to change in order to keep Jarod Mayo’s team in a few more of their games moving forward, but what?</p><p>Well, on a media appearance Friday night, Mayo gave fans their answer, letting them know that after four straight weeks coughing the ball up, Stevenson <a href="https://africa.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41613200/patriots-stevenson-plagued-fumbles-start-vs-dolphins" rel="noopener">would not be starting</a> for the team in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins.</p><p>“Had a conversation with Rhamondre and he won’t be starting … I’ll be upfront and transparent. But he will play. And he understands he has to protect the football going forward,” Mayo revealed via ESPN.</p><p>“We can’t preach ‘ball security is job security’ and still have him out there the majority of the time,” Mayo said. “I think it sends a stronger message to the players that there are certain things that we just can’t do to win — especially with the team we have today.”</p><p>Facing off against a Miami Dolphins team that is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dolphins-news-tyler-huntley-honest-on-botching-tyreek-hill-td" rel="noopener">noticeably less effective with Tyler Huntley under center</a> than Tua Tagovailoa, the Patriots have a serious chance to make up some ground in the AFC East with a win over Mike McDaniel and company in Week 5. If giving Antonio Gibson the nod and the plurality of the carries in Week 5 proves enough of a difference-maker to get a few more points on the board instead of a few more turnovers on the stat sheet, then who knows, maybe the change will prove permanent moving forward.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Antonio-Gibson-catching-a-pass-for-the-Patriots.jpg"><figcaption>Eric Canha-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>Antonio Gibson has played well for the Patriots in 2024 </b></h2><p>Originally drafted by the Washington Football Team – remember them? – in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Gibson had an up-and-down season in the Nation’s capital. He looked like a true star as a rookie and a sophomore in 2020-21, then fell off in 2022 and 2023 due to the emergence of Brian Robinson Jr. as a true RB1, and ultimately landed in New England this offseason on a <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GibsAn00.htm" rel="noopener">three-year, $11.25 million contract</a> in the hopes of replacing Ezekiel Elliott behind Stevenson.</p><p>Through his first four games in the red, silver, and blue, Gibson has looked great, averaging a career-high 5.3 yards per attempt on 29 runs – 155 yards overall – and has supplemented his efforts with 82 receiving yards on seven catches versus eight targets. And best of all, he hasn’t fumbled the ball once, despite coughing it up 12 times in Washington over four seasons.</p><p>Can Gibson be the answer at running back for the Patriots in 2024? I’m more disappointed in myself than anyone could ever be,” Stevenson told reporters on Wednesday (h/t Mike Reiss of ESPN)</p><p>“It’s very simple – I just have to hold on to the ball and have that mentality to come up with the ball every time. It’s my job to do that and I haven’t been doing it well.”</p><p>While Stevenson has fumbled in all four games, it started to become an issue over the last two games. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-rhamondre-stevensons-blunt-5-word-reaction-fumble-in-jets-loss">The Patriots were able to recover the two fumbles</a> Stevenson had in the first two games, so no harm, no foul. He also rushed for 120 yards in Week 1 and 81 yards in Week 2, with the fumbles in each game coming in the second half.</p><p>Unlike the first two games, the Patriots weren’t able to recover either of Stevenson’s more recent fumbles. It’s also not the first time fumbles have been a concern with Stevenson during his Patriots tenure. He fumbled on his second touch in his NFL debut in 2021, causing him to be benched for the following three games.</p><p>Now as a veteran and one of the key players on the Patriots, Stevenson acknowledged that he could lose his starting job due to fumbling the ball constantly.</p><p>“It’s the elephant in the room,” Stevenson said. “I dropped the ball four times, so whatever the coaching staff has planned, I’m rocking with it. Things haven’t gone very well since then, however.</p><p>While Stevenson is on pace for a career-high in rushing yards — he would eclipse 1,000 yards if things continue the way they’ve gone so far — he is almost certainly going to set a career-high in fumbles as well. Over his first three seasons in the league, Stevenson fumbled the ball seven times, and his 2022 season total of four accounted for more than half of his total.</p><p>If Stevenson keeps fumbling at the same rate he has through four games this year, though, he would be setting a new fumble career-high this weekend. The fourth-year running back has fumbled the ball once in each of the Patriots’ four games, and New England has lost possession the last two times.</p><p>Gibson, the Patriots’ backup who has not fumbled yet this season, could potentially solve some of the turnover issues, but Gibson’s past would seem to indicate that will not be the case. Everyone seemed to be playing poorly on Thursday night, including starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson.</p><p>Stevenson had his third fumble of the season, but this time the Patriots did not recover it. He <a href="https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/09/20/patriots-rb-rhamondre-stevenson-reacts-to-fumbling-in-third-straight-game/" rel="noopener">had a blunt response for reporters</a> who asked him about the fumble.</p><p>“I gotta hold the ball,” Stevenson said.</p><p>Stevenson rushed for a season-low 23 yards on just six carries on Thursday night.</p><p>Stevenson’s fumble came on the first play of the team’s seventh drive. He did not take another snap during the game, instead surrendering the final 14 minutes of the fourth quarter to Antonio Gibson and JaMycal Hasty.</p><p>“We just gotta look at the film, just go back to the drawing board and figure it out,” Stevenson said. “Figure out how to win.”</p><p>Stevenson believes there was little to gain from New England’s embarrassing performance.</p><p>“I didn’t really learn anything, to be honest,” he said. “Just another loss.”</p><h2><b>Jacoby Brissett gets real on potential Patriots QB change</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Jacoby-Brissett-1.jpg"></figure><p>Jacoby Brissett’s situation may be much worse than Rhamondre Stevenson’s.</p><p>Brissett had a lackluster performance against the Jets, only completing 12 passes for 98 yards but getting sacked five times for 46 yards. There is no way to have a functional offense when your QB cannot consistently move the chains, let alone get 100 yards in a game.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-jacoby-brissett-gets-100-real-potential-qb-change">This caused the Patriots to bench Brissett in favor of rookie Drake Maye</a> for their final drive of the game.</p><p>Head coach Jerod Mayo was non-committal when asked who would be the Patriots starting QB in Week 4. As a result, it is an open question of whether or not Brissett still has a job as the starting QB in New England.</p><p>“I’m not going to overreact to something I didn’t hear,” Brissett told reporters <a href="https://x.com/PhilAPerry/status/1836975866129023232" rel="noopener">when asked about Mayo’s answer</a>. “So, yeah.”</p><p>Brissett also said <a href="https://x.com/PhilAPerry/status/1836975866129023232" rel="noopener">“I don’t know”</a> when asked if there will be a change at QB moving forward.</p><p>“We talk about it every single week, you’re competing for a job,” Mayo said. He also added that “we’ll get together as a coaching staff” on whether he’d make a change at quarterback following Thursday’s loss.</p><p>The Patriots are in rough shape right now, but they will have a long weekend after playing on Thursday night.</p><p>New England better get themselves in order quickly. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/schedule/upcoming">The Patriots face the 49ers in Week 4</a> in a game that San Francisco will likely be very determined to win.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Seismic shifts in the departures of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have hollowed out the long-held iconic identity of the franchise.</p><p>Perhaps still feeling the regime changes in the wake of Belichick’s departure and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-robert-kraft-compares-hiring-jerod-mayo-bill-belichick">the hiring of Jerod Mayo</a> in January, running back Rhamondre Stevenson mistakenly answered a sideline question thinking his old head coach was the subject. Awkward!</p><p>It was an honest mistake. How much are they gonna miss him? And who’s gonna step up in his place?”</p><p>Stevenson didn’t miss a beat.</p><p>“Oh yeah, I miss Bill [Belichick]. That was one of my favorite coaches,” Stevenson said. “But Mayo is a great leader, he knows what he’s doing with us and I’m excited for Mayo. I think we can get it done with him.”</p><p>Burton then tried to salvage the interview but still didn’t say Matthew Judon’s name.</p><p>“I wasn’t talking about Mayo, I was about your defensive teammate.”</p><p>Then it dawned on Stevenson, “Oh, Judon.”</p><p>Burton kept the weirdness going, saying, “[Judon’s] moving on to better places.” A statement usually reserved for those who have passed, not teammates traded elsewhere.</p><p>Yet, Stevenson bullied forward.</p><p>“I’m excited for [Judon]. I know he has a couple more years in him. So I’m excited for him.”</p><h2>How a hard-to-watch Rhamondre Stevenson sideline interview could foreshadow this Patriots season</h2><p>In this second preseason game, the Patriots eventually lost to the Eagles, 14-13. No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye, fared well. He threw for 140 yards on 15-of-19 passing and called his own number in the red zone to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-drake-mayes-first-preseason-td-fans-going-bonkers">convert a four-yard touchdown rush</a>.</p><p>That positive performance could tamp down the hype backup QB Joe Milton  III received in the Patriots’ preseason opener by extending plays with his legs and showing off his big arm. How will new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt split the backfield touches between Stevenson and Antonio Gibson?
