The Colts’ defense smothered Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and the speedy Dolphins offense. Hill and fellow wideout Jaylen Waddle were held to 70 combined receiving yards. Meanwhile, the Colts’ offense became the first since 1977 to score on every possession.</p><p>This week, they will host a much more physical group, the Denver Broncos. Unfortunately, they will do so without their top cover corner.</p><p>Former Pro Bowler Charvarious Ward <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1966551822752940409" rel="noopener">has been ruled out</a> for Sunday’s game with a concussion he sustained last week, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. He is not the only member of the Colts’ secondary that will be out, either.</p><p>Backup cornerback Jaylon Jones has also been ruled out. Jones is dealing with a hamstring injury he suffered in training camp and is yet to take the field this season.</p><p>The news should excite the Broncos quarterback, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-bo-nix-change-turnovers">Bo Nix, who struggled in Week 1</a>.</p><p>Nix turned the ball over three times against the Tennessee Titans. But Denver’s defense did enough to hold Cam Ward in check during his NFL debut, as the Broncos escaped with a 20-12 victory. In the win, Nix threw for only 176 yards. Courtland Sutton led the team with 61 yards receiving, and he might be licking his chops at this news.</p><p>Colts head coach Shane Steichen was tired of dealing with slow starts. Before last Sunday, the last time the Colts had won a season opener was back in 2013 against the Las Vegas Raiders.</p><p>That prompted the team to take a more physical approach to training camp this year. Sunday will be a great test as to whether it pays dividends against the Broncos.</p><p>With Ward and Jones out Week 2, Indianapolis’ secondary will need Xavien Howard, Mekhi Blackmon, and Johnathan Edwards to step up.</p><p>With a home win on Sunday, the Colts would improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2009. There's a good chance he'll never let you forget the Atlanta Braves won the 2021 World Series.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Denver Broncos</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Week 2 will feature a battle when the Denver Broncos (1-0) go on the road to face their second AFC South opponent to begin the season, the Indianapolis Colts (1-0). <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-denver-week-1-debacle-sean-payton-self-check">The Broncos struggled</a> against the Tennessee Titans in Week 1, while the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-achieve-feat-not-seen-since-1977-in-dolphins-domination">Colts manhandled the Miami Dolphins</a>.</p><p>But that was last week, when teams had been preparing for their openers since the end of last season. Often, the following week produces very different results with less time to prepare.</p><p>Fans of both teams are probably asking whether last week was a fluke. The Broncos, including second-year quarterback Bo Nix, looked sluggish and out of sync offensively. They kept the Titans in the game far longer than they should have, and if not for their strong defense, the result might have been different with No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward threatening a comeback.</p><p>The Colts, meanwhile, dominated in all facets. Daniel Jones, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/3-under-the-radar-plays-that-proved-daniel-jones-was-the-colts-qb1">Indianapolis’ new QB1</a>, looked like a new quarterback in his new digs. It was about as strong an opening performance as Indianapolis could have hoped for, particularly at the quarterback position, which was a major question mark entering the season.</p><p>Whatever the case, one team will be leaving Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday with its first loss of the season. Here are four bold prediction for the AFC tilt.</p><h2><b>Colts fail to get takeaways, Bo Nix has bounce back game</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Denver-Broncos-QB-Bo-Nix.jpg"><figcaption>Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Everyone is still talking about what Indianapolis did to the Dolphins last week, flat-out embarrassing them. The Colts forced three turnovers, all coming from Tua Tagovailoa in Miami’s first five drives of the game.</p><p>Bo Nix, meanwhile, is coming off a sloppy performance of his own with three turnovers. Is it the start of a sophomore slump, or just one bad game? We’ll go with the latter, mainly because Nix has Sean Payton coaching him up. He knows he’s got to stay <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/preview/_/gameId/401772729" rel="noopener">turnover free</a> against the Colts.</p><p>“In the future maybe not be so aggressive, but at the same time that’s what makes us quarterbacks good,” Nix said. “It’s a fine line of being aggressive, but sometimes it just happens, and you just have to move on. I can definitely take a little bit more calculated attempts and that’s what I’ll attempt to do in the future.”</p><p>Could the Colts’ defense still be good? Possibly, but the Miami team they faced last week has plenty of red flags — with Tagovailoa being one of them. He’s long past being veteran, and while every quarterback has bad games, his performance looked like a veteran who may have taken a step back.</p><h2><b>Daniel Jones performs well but reminds Colts fans of Giants days</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Colts-news-Daniel-Jones-completely-aware-hes-not-the-QB-Colts-fans-wanted.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The most surprising result from the Colts’ Week 1 performance was Daniel Jones. Jones has been heavily criticized since his time with the New York Giants, but in a new setting he looked like a completely different player.</p><p>Against the Dolphins, he completed 22-of-29 passes for 272 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 26 yards and two more scores. Will that be the expectation every week? Shane Steichen and Colts fans are hoping so, but we’re still skeptical.</p><p>Much of what elevated Jones’ play last weekend stemmed from the Dolphins putting themselves in horrible situations and having to play from behind. While Nix could potentially do the same, as he did against the Titans, don’t count on the Broncos to give the Colts the same breaks.</p><p>Jones will do enough to keep his QB1 spot for another week, but he’ll also remind everyone why they still can’t fully trust him as a franchise quarterback. Plus, Denver’s defensive front is going to test the Colts’ new offensive line.</p><h2><b>J.K Dobbins makes it two consecutive weeks with a touchdown</b></h2><p>J.K. Dobbins had a solid start with his new team last weekend. While he fell just short of leading the team in rushing — finishing seven yards behind RJ Harvey (70) — he was the only back to score a touchdown. Dobbins also led the team in carries with 16. There’s no reason he won’t continue to get a steady workload against the Colts.</p><p>Sean Payton might still play it safe if he feels Bo Nix is struggling, but either way, expect Dobbins to score at least one touchdown on a goal-line run.</p><h2><b>Broncos cover spread, win by six points or more</b></h2><p>Maybe it was Daniel Jones’ impressive performance. Maybe it was Bo Nix’s lackluster outing. Or maybe it’s just the usual NFL tendency for close point spreads. Whatever the case, ESPN BET currently lists Sunday’s game with the Broncos <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/game/_/gameId/401772729/broncos-colts" rel="noopener">favored by 1.5 points</a>. It’s one of three games with that exact spread.</p><p>Could this game really be that close? It’s hard to trust this Colts team after just one game, especially considering it came against the Dolphins — a team that could end up being among the worst in the league this season.</p><p>The Broncos are the more talented team and better coached, though they may be a bit overhyped heading into the year. Hill is currently out after sustaining an ACL tear in December, and his return date is unclear. In college, Warren lined up at tight end and wide receiver. He even played a snap or two as a center on some trick plays for the Nittany Lions.</p><p>Tyler Warren played everywhere at Penn State, as he lined up in multiple positions for the Nittany Lions during his five years with the program. The visitors defeated the Colts’ AFC South rivals, the Tennessee Titans, 20-12 in their season opener. Ahead of the two undefeated teams’ clash on Sunday, Indianapolis received an unfortunate injury update on edge rusher Laiatu Latu. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport on X (formerly Twitter), Latu suffered <a href="https://x.com/rapsheet/status/1966230297525252387?s=46" rel="noopener">a hamstring injury yesterday,</a> causing him to miss today’s practice session.</p><p>“A few standout defenders showed up on the injury report: — #Colts edge Laiatu Latu suffered a hamstring injury yesterday and didn’t practice today,” reported Rapoport on Thursday afternoon. “– #Jets CB Sauce Gardner was limited in today’s practice with a groin injury.”</p><p>There’s still time <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-laiatu-latu-gets-positive-injury-update-deforest-buckner-goes-on-ir">for Latu to get back</a> to full health before Sunday’s tilt. The Colts would prefer not to be without one of their starting edge rushers. The former first-round pick had four sacks and three forced fumbles during his 2024 rookie campaign, to go with 32 total tackles. During Sunday’s season-opening victory, Latu had a tackle as well as his first interception in the pros. A sack during Sunday’s win showed that all too well.</p><p>Whether it’s Latu or Ebukam, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-achieve-feat-not-seen-since-1977-in-dolphins-domination">Colts will need to get</a> pressure on Broncos quarterback Bo Nix. The sophomore signal caller was a bit inconsistent in the season-opening win, but he can pick Indianapolis apart if given time. He has had a passion for sports his entire life, and enjoys covering and writing about all sports.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Buffalo Bills</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>It’s time to overreact to Week 1 of the NFL season, and a select few fanbases should be planning parades after their teams’ great performances in their season openers.</p><p>There were also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-week-1-losers-ravens-same-old-ravens-better-worse">plenty of losers in Week 1</a>, including poor showings by the Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans and another collapse in the fourth quarter from the Baltimore Ravens.</p><p>However, there were plenty of winners in the opening week as well, including two teams responsible for some of those losers as well as a Friday night quarterback performance that set the tone for the season. Here are the five biggest winners from Week 1.</p><h2><b>Packers announce themselves as Super Bowl contenders</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Micah-Parsons-on-Sept-7-2025.jpg"><figcaption>© Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The NFC felt wide open after the Philadelphia Eagles coming into the preseason, but the Green Bay Packers cemented themselves as the preseason No. 2 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-reasons-micah-parsons-dc-ready-to-run-through-wall">when they traded for Micah Parsons</a> in a massive deal with the Dallas Cowboys.</p><p>The Packers had a chance to show off exactly why they should be taken seriously in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, who finished with the best record in the NFC in the regular season in 2024. They did exactly that, running Detroit out of Lambeau Field in a 27-13 rout that was even more of a blowout than the final score suggests.</p><p>Offensively, the Packers looked like the same balanced machine that they were last season. Matt LaFleur came in with a masterful gameplan, and new Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard was overwhelmed by the creativity and experience that LaFleur brought to the game.</p><p>10 different Packers caught a pass, and nobody in green caught more than two balls. Green Bay also pounded the rock, controlled the clock with Josh Jacobs and didn’t turn the football over to give the Lions any momentum.</p><p>On defense, the Packers were absolutely flying around against a Lions offense that was struggling to find its footing without Ben Johnson. Jared Goff was pressured 16 times on 43 dropbacks, a middle-of-the-pack rate in Week 1, but he never got comfortable on Sunday. Parsons was especially impactful despite playing limited reps in his Packers debut, notching two pressures and a sack.</p><h2><b>Josh Allen is an alien</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/27032040.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Every now and then in sports, we get to watch a great player morph into an unstoppable superhero that puts their foot down and decides that they are not losing that day. Josh Allen did just that on Sunday night with the whole country watching and got the Bills to 1-0 on the season.</p><p>Make no mistake, Allen was still playing an excellent game even while trailing by 15 points with less than five minutes to go. His throw to set up a Matt Prater field goal at the end of the first half is a play that only a handful of players can make, and he still orchestrated a very productive day against a Ravens defense that should end up being very good, no matter how Sunday night looked.</p><p>In the final five minutes, however, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/bills-news-josh-allen-joins-cam-newton-historic-nfl-club-ravens-clash">Allen ascended to a place that very few are capable</a> of getting to. Every dropback felt like it was going to be a success and the Ravens defense felt helpless as he led the Bills down the field again and again. After a touchdown pass to Keon Coleman, aided by a little luck, found its mark, Allen capitalized on a Derrick Henry fumble with one of the throws of the weekend to set up a rushing touchdown to cut the lead to two.</p><p>When <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/ravens-news-john-harbaugh-doubles-down-4th-down-punt-decision-bills">John Harbaugh elected to punt the ball back to Allen and company</a> on fourth down with less than two minutes remaining, there was only one way the game was going to end. Four completions and a scramble later, it was time to send Prater out and celebrate one of the comebacks of the decade in the NFL.</p><h2><b>Justin Herbert puts the discourse to bed (or not)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Chargers-news-Justin-Herbert-does-best-Flash-impression-with-blazing-fast-run-vs.-Chiefs.jpg"><figcaption>Amanda Perobelli/Reuters via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>People who watch the Chargers religiously have been trying to explain this to people who don’t watch the Chargers for more than five years now: Justin Herbert is an incredible football player.</p><p>Admittedly, the Oregon product’s two playoff starts haven’t been pretty. A blown 27-3 lead in Jacksonville and a four-interception game in Houston, both of which he shares some of the blame for, have lowered the Herbert discourse to incredibly irresponsible levels.</p><p>On Friday night in the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, Herbert took all of that personally in prime time. He shredded Steve Spagnuolo and the Chiefs defense to the tune of 25-of-34 for 318 yards and three touchdowns. He also converted some key third downs and stayed ahead of the sticks with his legs, including a massive third-and-14 conversion that essentially ended the game.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-justin-herbert-earns-major-props-veteran-qb">Herbert was masterful all night</a>, not putting the ball in harm’s way even one time while still pushing the ball down the field throughout the night. He was the best player on the field during a game that featured Patrick Mahomes playing very well, showing off what he is capable of when he is at his best.</p><p>The Herbert discourse will descend outside of watching football and into writing narratives when playoff time comes around again, but until then, just enjoy one of the best in the world doing his thing each and every week.</p><h2><b>Steelers-Jets: The good vibes game nobody saw coming</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Aaron-Rodgers-helped-the-Steelers-gain-a-Week-1-victory-over-the-Jets.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Heading into the Sunday slate, Steelers Jets was the fifth game you throw on a laptop outside of your multiview and check in on the score here and there. However, it quickly became the must-see game of the morning, as Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields traded punches to open the 2025 season (it still sounds weird to say).</p><p>Rodgers turned back the clock and the Steelers got some explosive plays after the catch from DK Metcalf in his debut with the team. The veteran quarterback finished the game with four touchdown passes and marched the Pittsburgh offense up and down the field all day.</p><p>Rodgers’ athleticism has dwindled, but he can still get the ball just about anywhere on the field and got the ball out quicker than almost every other quarterback in the NFL in Week 1. It remains to be seen whether that keeps up when he is a little less fresh, but this was a great start either way.</p><p>On the other side, the Jets offense with Fields at the helm was one of the surprises of the weekend. The offensive line looked great even after losing Alijah Vera-Tucker and Fields was an asset in the running game. He wasn’t asked to do a ton as a passer, but he made some nice throws downfield, played on time and didn’t put the ball in harm’s way.</p><p>Overall, this was a nice blueprint for how this Jets offense can have success this season, and it showed in a week where they finished fifth in EPA per play. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-jets/jets-news-justin-fields-start-remarkable-stats">Fields actually finished at the top of the league</a> in EPA per dropback despite facing a 50% pressure rate, according to Next Gen Stats.</p><p>There’s still a world where both of these teams crash and burn over the next 17 weeks. For now, however, let’s enjoy that they gave us one of the most surprisingly entertaining games of the weekend.</p><h2><b>Daniel Jones, Colts destroy the Dolphins</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Colts-quarterback-Daniel-Jones-17-throws.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Colts’ decision to start Daniel Jones over Anthony Richardson got a lot of heat in the preseason, but all of the haters shut their mouths quickly on Sunday. In Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins, Daniel Jones stayed at home and Danny Dimes showed up to get the Colts to 1-0.</p><p>Jones finished with the fifth-best EPA per dropback in the NFL in Week 1, completing 22-of-29 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked just once as the Colts ran away with a dominant 33-8 win over a helpless Dolphins squad.</p><p>Jonathan Taylor and rookie DJ Giddens shared the rushing load in the run-heavy attack under Shane Steichen, and that helped suffocate a Miami defense that had no answers all night long. Defensively, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/dolphins-news-tua-tagovailoa-wild-retort-turnover-allegations">Colts forced three turnovers</a> and held an offense that has a lot of weapons down all day long.</p><p>This type of performance, if Indianapolis can replicate it over the course of the season, gives them a roadmap to competitiveness in an AFC South that doesn’t look overly challenging with the Texans struggling to protect C.J. Stroud once again. Whether Jones and company continue to do that is another story, but the vibes are high in Indy after one game.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Manning called Irsay “incredibly generous and passionate,” and promised he “will not be forgotten.”</p><p>“I am heartbroken to hear about Jim Irsay’s passing,” Manning wrote. “He was an incredibly generous and passionate owner and I will always be indebted to him for giving me my start in the NFL. His love for the Colts and the city of Indy was unmatched. His impact on the players who played for him will not be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone in the Colts community. He will be missed. Jim, rest in peace my friend.”</p><p>Manning played 14 seasons with the Colts. They released him in 2012 after he missed 2011 with a neck injury. Manning then played four years with the Denver Broncos, smashing NFL records and winning a Super Bowl with them.</p><p>Irsay passed away on May 21, 2025, at 65 years old. He died in his sleep at his Beverly Hills home. They inducted him into the Ring of Honor during the 2025 season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, September 7.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They seem to have made the right decision when they named quarterback Daniel Jones, who seemed to be on the outs in the NFL after flaming out with the New York Giants, their starting QB — bumping incumbent Anthony Richardson in the process.</p><p>With the Colts’ decision-making seemingly on a heater, it is best for fans to just trust the front office’s judgment for now. Following their Week 1 triumph, they decided to make a small tweak to their roster, changing up the running back rotation for their practice squad. As per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Colts released Khalil Herbert to make room for Ameer Abdullah.</p><p>On March, the Colts signed Herbert to be a part of their full squad, although the 27-year-old running back failed to make it to the final roster. But now, he needs to find a new home, with Indianapolis cutting him in favor of Abdullah, who played 16 games and even started three of those last year for the Las Vegas Raiders.</p><p>Abdullah is the more veteran option, with him being well-traveled at 32 years of age. He was part of the San Francisco 49ers’ roster during preseason, but the 49ers decided to place him on the season-ending injury list and cut him after he sustained a rib injury.</p><p>But clearly, Abdullah is healthy enough to be of value for the Colts, even though he would just be a member of the practice squad. It remains to be seen if he will see field time for the Colts this year. An injury or two to the Colts’ running back corps (knock on wood) could potentially open up a spot for him.</p><h2><b>Colts: a 2025 sleeper pick for playoff contention?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Colts-news-Daniel-Jones-completely-aware-hes-not-the-QB-Colts-fans-wanted.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Last year, the Colts went 8-9 and were right in the playoff hunt until the final weeks of the regular season. This year, they are looking to make the leap to playoff contention — with their incredible win over the Dolphins in Week 1 of the season suggesting that they might be ready to do so.</p><p>As for the Colts’ running back core, they have Jonathan Taylor, a former First Team All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, leading the way. He has been labeled a turnover-prone project by some and a misunderstood talent by others. Before the 2025 season, his career had been a rollercoaster defined by flashes of brilliance and stretches of mediocrity. In his first game with the Indianapolis Colts, though, Jones delivered the kind of performance that forces even his harshest critics to reconsider. The question, of course, is whether this was a one-week mirage or the beginning of something real. A closer look suggests it’s far more than a fluke.</p><h2><b>Colts dominate Dolphins in Week 1</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Colts-news-Daniel-Jones-completely-aware-hes-not-the-QB-Colts-fans-wanted.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Colts became one of the biggest storylines of NFL Week 1 after dismantling the Miami Dolphins, <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401772719">33-8</a>. The win snapped an 11-year drought in season openers. It was Indy’s first Week 1 victory since 2013 after going 0-10-1 from 2014 to 2024. In his debut with the Colts, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-indianapolis-fans-daniel-jones-bandwagon-hot-start-dolphins">Jones was the catalyst</a>. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown, while adding 26 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. More impressively, Jones guided the offense to points on every single possession. That made Indianapolis the first team since at least 2000 to score on every drive in a game.</p><p>The dominance was comprehensive. Indianapolis piled up 418 yards of offense against Miami’s 211. The Colts won the turnover battle 3-0 and converted 27 first downs compared to the Dolphins’ 12. By halftime, the Colts had built a 20-point lead, while Miami was shut out in the first half of a season opener for the first time since 2009. From start to finish, it was less a game and more a statement. The Colts, with Jones at the helm, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-end-brutal-streak-4400-days">might be far more dangerous</a> than anyone anticipated.</p><p>Here we’ll try to look at and discuss the reasons why Daniel Jones’ Week 1 explosion wasn’t a fluke with the Indianapolis Colts.</p><h2><b>Efficient scoring mastery drives Colts’ dominance</b></h2><p>The first reason Jones’ Week 1 explosion <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-next-sam-darnold-after-hot-start-vs-dolphins">can’t be written off as a fluke</a> is the sheer efficiency with which the Colts offense operated under his direction. Scoring on seven consecutive drives isn’t just rare. It’s practically unheard of in the modern NFL. That level of consistency requires precise execution, unshakable poise, and unwavering command of the game plan.</p><p>Jones didn’t just put up gaudy numbers. He averaged 9.4 yards per attempt, which is the third-best mark of his career. He also finished with a passer rating of 115.9. Perhaps most tellingly, Jones was sacked only once. That was a testament to both his ability to adjust protections pre-snap and his decisiveness with the football. He didn’t let Miami dictate the flow; instead, he dictated it to them.</p><p>This wasn’t about one or two broken plays or a couple of deep shots connecting. It was a methodical dismantling of a defense, built on sharp reads, smart throws, and opportunistic runs. Sustaining drives at that clip takes more than luck.</p><h2><b>Commanding the offense with poise and precision</b></h2><p>The second reason this performance feels sustainable is Jones’ evolution as a field general. Long criticized as a quarterback who relied too much on his legs or who crumbled in big moments, Jones instead looked like a poised, polished veteran. He ran the Colts offense with surgical precision.</p><p>He completed nearly 76 percent of his passes and displayed elite situational awareness. His pre-snap reads were crisp, and his ability to use his mobility selectively (rather than recklessly) was on full display with his two rushing scores.</p><p>Head coach Shane Steichen and the Colts staff trusted Jones enough to hand him the reins over Anthony Richardson, and Week 1 justified that decision. He looked less like a stopgap and more like a quarterback who could legitimately anchor a playoff push.</p><h2><b>Perfect fit with a supportive system and team</b></h2><p>Finally, context matters. Jones appears to have landed in the perfect environment to succeed. With the New York Giants, he was often tasked with carrying a sputtering offense behind a porous line. In Indianapolis, he’s working with one of the league’s more balanced supporting casts. The results are already obvious.</p><p>Michael Pittman Jr remains a reliable No. 1 option. He hauled in a 27-yard touchdown to highlight their early chemistry. Jonathan Taylor continues to command defensive respect as one of the league’s premier backs. This prevented opponents from simply teeing off on Jones.
