The way that Khalil Herbert and other members of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bears-news-matt-eberflus-eye-opening-take-on-running-back-will-excite-chicago-fans">the Bears are talking</a> in this preseason, Chicago’s rushing attack could be even better this year. After Roschon Johnson’s impressive performance in Chicago’s Week 2 preseason game, Khalil Herbert <a href="https://bearswire.usatoday.com/2023/08/25/khalil-herbert-explains-what-makes-bears-rookie-roschon-johnson-so-impressive/?taid=64e905ed2558570001851b22&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=trueanthem&amp;utm_source=twitter">heaped a ton</a> of praise on the rookie running back</p><p>“He’s just very explosive through the hole but the things he does, everybody was excited,” Herbert said, via Bears Wire. “The physicality, the burst, I feel like he has a combination of everything. Those things and then once he gets a full head of steam and comes down running the ball at you, he’s going to make you pay for trying to tackle him.”</p><p>The Bears <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/roschon-is-a-god-bijan-robinsons-comments-ex-teammate-bears-draft-pick-will-hype-up-chicago-fans" rel="noopener">picked Johnson</a> in the fourth round of this year’s draft. Bijan Robinson led the Texas backfield last year, but Johnson ran for 554 yards on 6.0 yards per carry.</p><p>Chicago added more talent in the running back room by signing D’onta Foreman in free agency. Foreman fell just short of 1,000 yards with the Carolina Panthers last season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/khalil-herberts-fantasy-football-outlook-for-the-2023-season" rel="noopener">Herbert averaged</a> 5.7 yards per carry for the Bears.</p><p>“I feel like any of us in that room, it’s no dropoff,” Herbert said. “We got a bunch of guys that get their ball in their hands, take it the distance, make big plays. I feel bad for defenses having to defend. When one of us gets tired and the other goes in, and it’s the same thing. One gets tired, another goes in, it’s the same thing. However, <a href="https://www.sportsmockery.com/chicago-bears/roschon-johnson-thinks-he-has-one-big-advantage-over-other-rbs/" rel="noopener">he believes one specific quality</a> will allow him to become an instant difference maker for Chicago.</p><p>“Ultimately, from a character standpoint, I feel like you’re going to get a leader at the position who has played quarterback,” Johnson told Under Center podcast, via Sports Mockery’s Erik Lambert. “So, it’s kind of like that element of leadership that comes from a quarterback but at the running back spot that you normally don’t get from other guys.”</p><p>The 22-year-old was a star high school quarterback at Port Neches-Groves in Texas before converting to running back for the Longhorns. Justin Fields will surely appreciate having another player with a signal-caller’s mindset and vision. That type of versatility can do wonders for the Bears next season, as head coach Matt Eberflus continues to figure out how best to utilize his offensive talent.</p><p>Roschon Johnson could make his job easier, especially if he is operating with a QB’s high sense of urgency and attention to detail. Anticipating the defense’s movements is always crucial when running out of the backfield, but he has a complete perspective to use to his advantage.</p><p>“Running backs aren’t necessarily trained to look at defenses like that,” he said. “It’s like OK, you look at what front you got, where the linebackers are and you can kind of get pigeonholed if you’re not used to looking at safeties and kind of just the big picture. I still look at defenses like that.”</p><p>Johnson totaled 554 rushing yards and six touchdowns in a secondary role with Texas last season.
