The former Cincinnati Bengals running back is already expected to have a big role in the offense as well, even when Williams is healthy again.</p><p>With OTAs starting, head coach Sean Payton spoke out <a href="https://theathletic.com/4532014/2023/05/19/denver-broncos-otas-randy-gregory/" rel="noopener">on how important</a> Perine will be for the Broncos in 2023. Via The Athletic:</p><p>“When we signed Samaje Perine, this is a guy that gave us flexibility,” Payton said. “We signed him because we knew he was durable and reliable. … We felt like we got another solid runner who’s built in a strong way. There are a lot of things he does well. When we signed him, there was still uncertainty (with Williams). I was taught a long time ago to stack them up at that position. It’s a tough position in our league.”</p><p>Remember, Payton is the type of coach who loves to roll with two backs who both have a big workload. That’s great news for Samaje Perine. The 27-year-old was a solid contributor for Cincinnati across the last two seasons, averaging more than four yards per carry. In 2022, he ran for 394 yards on 95 touches.</p><p>While Perine isn’t going to run the ball 175 times as he did in his rookie year with Washington, he figures to be a key piece for Payton, who does a great job of bringing out the best in his offensive weapons. He was only able to finish that game and only registered 20 rushing yards on seven carries. Fortunately for the Bengals, they have one of the most dependable backup running backs in the league, as Perine was able to lead the way, together with Joe Burrow, for Cincinnati, who came away with a 37-30 victory.</p><p>Perine stepped up in lieu of Joe Mixon and exploded for three receiving touchdowns to go with a total of 82 yards from scrimmages on 15 total touches.</p><p>While there is still a chance Joe Mixon manages to clear the concussion protocol before Week 12’s matchup against the Tennessee Titans this coming Sunday on the road, it makes lots of sense for fantasy owners to prioritize getting Perine from the waivers — if he hasn’t been already. For one, concussions can be pretty hard to read in terms of predicting a player’s timeline for return.</p><p>On the season, the Bengals are third in the NFL with 26.5 points per <a href="https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/team/cincinnati-bengals/stats" rel="noopener">game</a>. Their offense is mostly predicated on Burrow and the passing attack, which also boosts their running backs’ PPR value, as evidenced by Perine’s three-touchdown performance against the Steelers.</p><p>If Joe Mixon eventually gets ruled out of Week 12, the soonest he can return will be in Week 13 at home versus the Kansas City Chiefs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
