He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Cleveland Browns</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Sunday, the Cleveland Browns will hit the road to take on the New England Patriots in search of their second win of the 2025 NFL season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/browns-news-shedeur-sanders-reason-donovan-mcnabb-feels-bad-dillon-gabriel">Dillon Gabriel has been starting</a> for the Browns at quarterback the last few weeks since the benching and subsequent trade of Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals, with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/why-browns-shedeur-sanders-is-inactive-vs-patriots">Shedeur Sanders occupying</a> the backup position for now (although he will miss this game due to injury).</p><p>Many have been clamoring for Sanders to get an opportunity to start in Cleveland considering Gabriel’s uninspiring start and Sanders’ bankability in the headlines, and recently, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam spoke on a side of Sanders that some fans <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6747218/2025/10/25/nfl-trade-rumors-news-aj-brown-jerry-jones-targets/" rel="noopener">may not get to see.</a></p><p>“Listen, he’s a serious football player, and inside the building, there’s no noise,” Haslam said, via Dianna Russini of The Athletic. “He comes to work every day just like everybody else, and he’s trying to get better as a football player.”</p><p>Still, Haslam continues to extend a long leash to Gabriel as his career develops.</p><p>“Dillon has played three games, and that’s not a great sample (size),” Haslam said. “And one of them was in a monsoon. You could say he played two games. The Browns are listing Shedeur Sanders as inactive for their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/browns-vs-patriots-bold-predictions-for-2025-nfl-week-8-clash">Week 8 tilt against the New England Patriots</a>, per Adam Schefter. “Browns QB Shedeur Sanders, listed as questionable for today due to a back injury, is inactive vs. the Patriots.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/browns-news-shedeur-sanders-back-injury-ahead-patriots-clash">With Sanders out,</a> Bailey Zappe will take over as the backup quarterback for the Browns. Rookie Dillon Gabriel will still get the start against the Patriots after being named the starter in Week 4.</p><p>Sanders was drafted by the Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. At the start of the draft cycle, the Colorado prospect was heralded as one of the best quarterbacks in his draft class. With his ability to extend a play and his accuracy, some scouts even pegged him to be a first-round prospect at one point. There was some smoke that led fans to believe that he could go as high as #2.</p><p>However, come draft night, Sanders slid… and slid, and slid. In a shocking turn of events, the quarterback was passed on by every team in the NFL, including the Browns, multiple times. There’s no definitive answer as to why Sanders dropped so low, but he was eventually picked up by Cleveland along with Gabriel.</p><p>Sanders has yet to suit up for the Browns in a regular-season game this season. When Joe Flacco was benched earlier this season, it was Gabriel, then the QB2, who took over as the starter. They are 2-5 and have had a rotating cast of quarterbacks. They started the year with Joe Flacco as their starter and went into the season with four quarterbacks. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/raiders-news-las-vegas-lands-kenny-pickett-trade-browns" rel="noopener">They traded away Kenny Pickett</a> and Joe Flacco and only have their rookies, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Gabriel is starting, but there is a lot of speculation around Sanders.</p><p>At the team’s press conference, browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told the media that Shedeur Sanders is not getting practice reps with the first-team offense. Sanders is the backup, but Gabriel has been cemented as the starter. Stefanski reasoned that Gabriel is also a rookie, and <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46684384/stefanski-sanders-not-getting-starting-reps-gabriel" rel="noopener">he wants him to get as many reps as possible as a young quarterback</a>, whereas with Joe Flacco, it could be more split.</p><p>“With a young quarterback, with Dillon starting, you want to ensure he gets many reps. It’s different when you have a veteran with Joe,” said Stefanski, who also noted that Sanders is “still getting reps in a bunch of periods.”</p><p>Sanders was upgraded to the backup role for the last two games after being listed as the emergency third quarterback for the first five games.</p><p>Since being upgraded, Sanders has split scout team reps with practice squad quarterback Bailey Zappe. Stefanski noted that Sanders and other young players also get reps in post-practice sessions.</p><p>The Browns are 1-2 since they moved to Dillon Gabriel and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/bengals-news-acquiring-browns-joe-flacco-big-trade" rel="noopener">traded away Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals</a>. He got his first win as a starter this season when they beat the Miami Dolphins 31-6. So far, Gabriel has completed 59.8% of his passes for 546 yards and three touchdowns.</p><p>Stefanski is a great NFL coach known for developing some solid offenses. He seems to be one of the best coaches to try to establish Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders as rookies.</p><p>Shedeur Sanders attracts much attention because of who he is and his dad. There will always be questions about that, and there is the added storyline that Sanders fell so far in the 2025 NFL Draft after being projected as a first-round pick.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Cleveland Browns</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Recently, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/browns-news-how-cleveland-wildcat-quinshon-judkins-destroy-dolphins">Cleveland Browns picked up</a> their second win of the season with a home victory <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/browns-news-ronnie-hickman-crystal-ball-interception-tua-tagovailoa">over the Miami Dolphins</a> in blowout fashion by a score of 31-6. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who recently took over the starting job after the trade of Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals, didn’t perform particularly well in this one, but he wasn’t asked to do a whole lot in the blowout victory.</p><p>Despite the win, some Browns fans <a href="https://x.com/ESPNCleveland/status/1980982344820634059" rel="noopener">are still clamoring</a> for the team to make its second quarterback switch of the season, including radio host Tony Rizzo.</p><p>“If I see that again, I would take the bye and use the two weeks to get Shedeur ready to start against the Jets,” said Rizzo, per ESPN Cleveland on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>The show also spoke on rumors that the Browns could be interested in trading for New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson.</p><p>“I’d drive to New York to get him,” said Rizzo. “We’ll take him in a heartbeat.”</p><h2><b>A strange time for young quarterbacks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Browns-1.jpg"><figcaption>Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>In previous eras, young quarterbacks were typically given at least a full season to prove themselves before a team decided whether or not they saw a future with them.</p><p>However, this is clearly no longer the case in 2025, with Browns fans already clamoring for the team to move on from Gabriel after three starts.</p><p>Shedeur Sanders, whom the team selected in the fifth round of the same draft class as Gabriel, hasn’t played yet this year but has still managed to capture the majority of the headlines due to his high-profile family and the strong showing he put on during preseason, causing some to wonder if he has been the answer to the Browns’ quarterback woes all along.</p><p>Teams are typically careful about inserting new quarterbacks into the fold, waiting to do so until they see a seemingly weaker opponent on the schedule to allow them to hit the ground running. If Rizzo’s scenario turned out to be true, the Jets would seemingly be an ideal opponent for Sanders to get his first start.</p><p>In any case, the Browns and Patriots will kick off on Sunday at 1:00 PM ET.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
