Brock Purdy and Skylar Thompson, both of whom were selected in the seventh round in 2022, drew starts for their teams in the Wild Card Round, and they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-brock-purdy-makes-nfl-playoff-history-vs-seahawks-with-never-before-seen-qb-feat" rel="noopener">made history</a> with their impressive performances. While only Purdy and the Niners will be advancing to the Divisional Round, the two quarterbacks are now the <a href="https://twitter.com/NFLResearch/status/1614747347682201600" rel="noopener">highest-scoring rookie QBs</a> in NFL Playoff history.</p><p>Via NFL Research on Twitter:</p><p>“The only rookie starting QB in NFL history to lead his team to more points in a playoff game than Skylar Thompson (31) was Brock Purdy (41) in yesterday’s NFC Wild Card Game.”</p><p>Purdy and the 49ers ran up the score against the Seattle Seahawks, brushing aside Geno Smith and Co. 41-23. The 41 points scored by the Niners were the most by a team with a rookie starting quarterback in NFL Playoff history.</p><p>While Skylar Thompson and the Dolphins were defeated 34-31 by the Buffalo Bills, their scoring output was the second most behind Purdy for a rookie QB. The fact that both were seventh-rounders, including Mr. Irrelevant, the final pick of the draft, adds to the impressive nature of their performances.</p><p>In his playoff debut, Brock Purdy completed 60 percent of his pass attempts for 332 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He rushed for another TD, too, bringing his tally to four for the game.</p><p>As for Thompson, he didn’t fare quite as well. Thompson completed just 18-of-45 pass attempts for 220 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Despite that, the Dolphins kept things close against the Bills, even taking a late lead before falling by three points after entering as 14-point underdogs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Thompson was forced into starting duty after Tua Tagovailoa’s head injury. While he helped the Dolphins score 31 points, Thompson struggled at times, completing 18-of-45 passes for 220 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Even in defeat, Thompson <a href="https://twitter.com/DavidFurones_/status/1614747893683949571" rel="noopener">didn’t shy away</a> from those struggles and spoke about Miami’s mentality moving forward, via David Furones of the Sun Sentinel.</p><p>“We struggled at times. I take full responsibility for it,” Thompson said. It was a loud environment, but we knew that going into it. There were things that I could’ve done better. Those experiences are great learning experiences for me. I take full responsibility for those miscues and not being clean. It’s something you learn from and take into next time.”</p><p>“We’re hurt right now. Nobody in that locker room wanted to lose, Thompson continued. “Those guys gave us every chance to win.”</p><p>When he speaks of, “those guys,” Thompson is talking about the Dolphins’ defense. Miami forced three turnovers on the day, intercepting Josh Allen twice and returning an Allen fumble <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dolphins-news-zach-sieler-wife-frenzy-scoop-and-score-josh-allen-bills" rel="noopener">for a touchdown</a>. The Dolphins were able to stay level with the Bills due mainly in part to their ferocious defense.</p><p>Skylar Thompson was making his first career postseason start. It’s just the third start in his short NFL career. While the Dolphins were eliminated from the playoffs, Thompson is hoping this loss will keep him prepared if he gets another postseason opportunity.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The good news? At least now there’s a better chance Skylar Thompson will have the pass protection needed to pull off a major upset.</p><p>Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead is officially active for the Wild Card round despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dolphins-get-a-concerning-terron-armstead-injury-update-ahead-of-afc-wild-card-clash-vs-bills">missing multiple practices this week</a> with toe, pectoral, knee and hip issues. If he starts, expect coach Mike McDaniel to go with Greg Little, Robert Hunt or Geron Christian on the other side, with Little—who filled in for Armstrong during last’s regular season finale—likely having a leg up on his teammates.</p><p>Armstead was named to his fourth Pro Bowl this season after missing out on the honor in 2021. He made three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2018 to 2020, also garnering Second Team All-Pro honors in 2018.</p><p>Thompson started two games during the regular season, going 1-1, and appeared in five others in relief for injured starter Tua Tagovailoa. The former Kansas State Wildcats star threw for 534 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions while completing 57.1% of his throws as a rookie. With Tua Tagovailoa continuing to recover from his head injuries, the team is down to… Teddy Bridgewater and Skylar Thompson. With Bridgewater also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dolphins-news-teddy-bridgewater-finger-injury-gets-massive-update-ahead-of-crucial-jets-game" rel="noopener">nursing an injury</a>, fans were wondering about the QB situation. Now, the Dolphins have <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1613946868379127817" rel="noopener">announced their starting QB</a> for the Wild Card Round: Skylar Thompson, per Ian Rapoport.</p><p>“#Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel tells reporters that QB Skylar Thompson is the starter vs. the #Bills.”</p><p>While Thompson is starting for the Dolphins, Teddy Bridgewater will <a href="https://twitter.com/DavidFurones_/status/1613945325261324289" rel="noopener">continue to prepare in case</a> of an “emergency”. They barely made it to the playoffs, and now face a familiar foe in the Bills with their third-string QB Skylar Thompson.</p><p>Miami is considered the underdog for this game, and for good reason. The Bills came into the season as Super Bowl favorites. And while the Dolphins gave them a run for their money, Buffalo just completely dominated their way to a Wild Card match with them.</p><p>The Dolphins have lost their last two games against the Bills in the regular season. The final play of the game was ruled a safety for the Dolphins when Garrett Wilson of the Jets recovered a late pitch in the New York end zone.</p><p>McDaniel was <a href="https://twitter.com/gunnerhal/status/1612202996783366144" rel="noopener">more relieved</a> than celebratory when the game came to an end. “You don’t want it to be this hard through the game and through this season,” McDaniel said.</p><p>By virtue of the victory, the Dolphins will play the No. 2 seed Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round of the AFC playoffs. The Bills clinched that position by beating the New England Patriots 35-23 in Buffalo.</p><p>The Dolphins split their two games with the Bills during the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dolphins-news-tyreek-hill-injury-update-in-week-18-vs-jets" rel="noopener">regular season</a>. Miami won the Week 3 game at home by a 21-19 margin, but the Dolphins dropped a 32-29 decision in Week 15 at Buffalo.</p><p>Skylar Thompson was under center for the Dolphins as injuries prevented Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater from playing. Thompson completed 20 of 31 passes for 152 yards, and while he did not have a TD pass, he did not throw <a href="https://twitter.com/gunnerhal/status/1612198933777813507" rel="noopener">any interceptions</a>.</p><p>“Nobody was telling me that I had to be a hero,’ Thompson said. “It may not have been pretty, but we got the job done.”</p><p> </p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
