After all, this is the team that’s tried to ride the thin line between championship <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/cin">contention and roster preservation</a>. However, as training camp nears for the 2025 NFL season, the Bengals find themselves in murky waters once again. This time, it’s not just about Joe Burrow’s health or the balance between a loaded offense and an improving defense. The biggest plotline involves a rookie edge rusher who hasn’t even signed his deal. Now, while most rookies come in with fanfare and fresh energy, Cincinnati’s latest first-rounder may be headed out before he ever suits up.</p><h2><b>A Strategy That’s Aging Poorly</b></h2><p>There are a few ways to deal with a pressing issue. Some try to cut the problem into smaller pieces and solve the components one at a time. Others ask for help. And then there are people who simply decide to sleep it off and wait it out. Whatever’s wrong will resolve itself.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Cincinnati-Bengals-quarterback-Joe-Burrow-throws-a-pass-during-a-scrimmage.jpg"><figcaption>Frank Bowen IV/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Bengals appear to be adopting that last strategy with their most pressing issue. Though the organization signed wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-rumors-twists-jamarr-chase-tee-higgins-contract-details">to long-term extensions in March</a>, they’ve yet to address the requests of star edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-news-orlando-brown-jr-weighs-in-trey-hendrickson-contract-dispute">He wants a new contract</a> or a trade to another team that will give him one. Cincinnati doesn’t appear to be inclined to do either.</p><p>It was going to be hard for the Bengals to replace Hendrickson in March. However, that possibility has become downright impossible following free agency and the draft. He created an unprecedented 26 sacks for himself and his teammates a year ago, per ESPN’s metrics. The data for this metric dates to 2017, and no other player had topped 20 sacks created in a season.</p><p>Since Hendrickson initially expressed his displeasure about his deal in March, the price of a potential extension has only gone up. Recall that Myles Garrett signed a four-year, $160 million extension to stay with the Browns. That raised the top of the edge rusher market from $34 million per season to $40 million per year. Micah Parsons is expected to up that figure further when he signs his extension with the Cowboys. The best time for the Bengals to get a Hendrickson deal done was March. The next-best time would be now. And then we have their rookie holdout situation.</p><p>Here we’ll try to look at the obvious Cincinnati Bengals trade candidate entering the 2025 NFL training camp.</p><h2><b>The Rookie Who Might Get Dealt Before He Even Plays</b></h2><p>Yes, Hendrickson remains the headline name in the Bengals’ contract drama. That said, there’s another problem brewing that could explode during camp: rookie left defensive end Shemar Stewart. Selected No. 17 overall out of Texas A&amp;M, Stewart is making waves for the wrong reasons. He’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-news-cincy-lineman-very-confident-trey-hendrickson-shemar-stewart-signed">yet to sign his rookie deal</a>, hasn’t practiced with the team, and is refusing to participate in any activities. He wants language regarding injury insurance in his contract amended.</p><p>This type of holdout is nearly unheard of in today’s NFL, particularly under the current CBA. Rookies, especially first-rounders, rarely miss meaningful offseason time over contract language. And yet, here we are. Stewart not only skipped offseason workouts. He even walked out of the facility early during minicamp, underscoring how serious the impasse has become.</p><p>It’s the kind of standoff that could force an unthinkable outcome: a pre-practice trade of a first-round pick.</p><p>No team has ever traded away a first-rounder before signing them. Should Cincinnati entertain that option, it would mark a historical first. It would also likely spark league-wide conversations about rookie contract negotiations. Sure, some front office personnel remain hopeful Stewart will eventually sign. However, others believe the clock is ticking louder each day.</p><h2><b>Potential Suitors</b></h2><p>While Stewart hasn’t taken a snap in Bengals gear, other NFL teams are reportedly monitoring the situation closely. The Panthers, Patriots, and 49ers are believed to be potential landing spots. Each franchise has its own pass-rushing needs. Stewart’s upside—despite an underwhelming college stat sheet—is enticing.</p><p>Standing at 6’5 and weighing nearly 290 pounds, Stewart boasts an NFL-ready frame and rare athleticism. Scouts praised his raw potential leading up to the draft. That’s even if his sack totals at Texas A&amp;M didn’t turn heads. For a team looking for a long-term developmental project with a high ceiling, he’s an appealing gamble.</p><p>However, that’s exactly the problem for Cincinnati. This is not a team in rebuild mode. They’re contending for a Super Bowl. Trading away their top pick before he even plays potentially signals organizational dysfunction. Ifthey lose Hendrickson as well, the defensive line would go from strength to liability overnight.</p><h2><b>A Trade Might Still Be the Right Call</b></h2><p>Despite the risk of bad optics, the Bengals might be wise to seriously consider trading Stewart if contract talks don’t progress soon. Distractions are the enemy of teams with Super Bowl aspirations. Cincinnati has enough on its plate trying to keep Joe Burrow healthy and the offense humming.</p><p>Hendrickson’s situation already looms large. Adding Stewart’s stalemate to the mix creates unnecessary tension heading into camp. That return could be more beneficial than letting the situation deteriorate further and watching Stewart’s trade value crater.</p><h2><b>The Bottom Line</b></h2><p>The Bengals entered this offseason with a clear mandate: retool without regressing. Extending Chase and Higgins was a major win. But the mishandling of Hendrickson’s contract and Stewart’s rookie impasse threaten to undermine what could be a special season in Cincinnati.</p><p>The Shemar Stewart saga is bizarre, unpredictable, and unprecedented. But if the Bengals don’t resolve it soon, they may have no choice but to become the first team in NFL history to trade away a first-round pick before he even signs.</p><p>If that’s the path they take, it will go down as a cautionary tale—and the most obvious trade of 2025 training camp.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Cincinnati missed the playoffs for the second straight year in 2024, putting the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/bengals-news-joe-burrow-takes-l-vs-3-fans-qb-skills-challenge-fanatics-fest">pressure on Joe Burrow</a> and company to rally this season.</p><p>There has been some doubt in recent months as to what the future holds for the Bengals’ home field of Paycor Stadium and whether it would be tenable for the long term of the franchise.</p><p>However, recently, Adam Schefter of ESPN took to X, formerly Twitter, with <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1938290237911773485" rel="noopener">a positive update</a> in that department.</p><p>“Bengals and Hamilton County have agreed to a new deal to modernize Paycor Stadium and keep the Bengals in downtown Cincinnati through June 2036,” reported Schefter.</p><p>Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn also released a statement in response to the news.</p><p>“This is a significant day for the Bengals and Hamilton County as we secure the team’s future in Cincinnati,” said Blackburn, per Schefter. “We thank the Hamilton County Commissioners for supporting this agreement to ensure Paycor Stadium remains an excellent venue and a focal point for Cincinnati’s riverfront. We are proud to call Paycor Stadium our home and to keep our future here in Cincinnati, where it belongs.”</p><p>The Bengals are looking to make some better memories at Paycor Stadium in 2025 than they did the last couple of years.</p><p>The biggest problem for the Bengals throughout the Joe Burrow era has been their tendency to get off to slow starts, which continued last year with a shocking home loss to the New England Patriots to open the season, a loss from which they never fully recovered.</p><p>The pressure will be on Burrow and his teammates to come out of the gates swinging for their first game of 2025–on the road vs the Cleveland Browns on September 7.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It promises more behind-the-scenes access and lots of on-field highlights.</p><p>Of course, Cousins is the first signal-caller to return for a second season. He previously headlined the first season, which also featured <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/chiefs-news-teams-bold-patrick-mahomes-post-will-fire-fans-up">Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes</a> and Marcus Mariota.</p><p>Burrow and Goff will appear on the show for the first time. They are featured heavily in the first trailer, which we will break down completely.</p><h2><b>Joe Burrow faces quarterback mortality</b></h2><p>Burrow, who is heading into his sixth season in the league, opens the trailer by discussing a quarterback’s longevity. He knows you don’t play forever, and his first few years flew by.</p><p>“You only have so many of these seasons. [When] you start out your career, you’re like, ‘I’m gonna be playing for 15, 20 years.’ It seems like a lot,” Burrow explains, “And then you blink your eye, and you’re in year five. Next time I blink, it’s gonna be year 10. Now, where [are we] at? The great ones make it work.”</p><p>His fifth year in the league may have been his best. Burrow led all quarterbacks in the NFL with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns. It was a major turnaround from his injury-riddled 2023 campaign. With one of the most explosive passing attacks in football and a generational quarterback in Joe Burrow, the Bengals can’t afford to waste another year on the fringe of contention. Sure, they made headlines by securing their star receivers. However, glaring holes remain on both sides of the ball. One move could be the difference between another playoff miss and a return to AFC supremacy: locking down their most productive defensive player to a long-term extension.</p><h2><b>Offseason Recap</b></h2><p>The Bengals did pretty well in the offseason, even though they did little to actually improve their roster. Cincinnati took care of some much-needed business by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-rumors-twists-jamarr-chase-tee-higgins-contract-details">extending standout wide receivers</a> Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.</p><p>Now, the Bengals probably should have gotten deals with both receivers done a year ago. Still, it’s better late than never. The extensions should appease quarterback Burrow. He lobbied hard for the Bengals to bring back both of his two favorite targets.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Joe-Burrows-moment-with-JaMarr-Chase-Tee-Higgins-sparks-intense-buzz-.jpg"></figure><p>Unfortunately, Cincinnati didn’t extend every key contributor who was due a new deal this offseason. Pass-rusher and reigning NFL sacks leader Trey Hendrickson is entering a contract year. His lack of a new deal has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-news-adam-schefter-reveals-trey-hendrickson-bengals-offer-falls-way-short">seemingly created a strained relationship</a>.</p><p>Yes, making Burrow happy and keeping one of the league’s best passing attacks intact is good for business. That said, Cincinnati’s unwillingness to invest heavily in its defense is problematic. The team’s 25th-ranked defense prevented the Bengals from making the playoffs last season. Their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-news-lou-anarumo-4-coaches-fired-zac-taylor-staff">solution was to fire coordinator</a> Lou Anarumo and replace him with Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden.</p><p>The Bengals did use their top two draft selections on defenders. That said, first-round pick Shemar Stewart is an unpolished boom-or-bust prospect. He may not contribute right away. Adding Lucas Patrick and rookie third-round pick Dylan Fairchild isn’t enough to give Burrow top-tier protection, too.</p><p>Here we’ll try to look at the perfect Cincinnati Bengals move to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/cin">fill out their roster</a> before the 2025 training camp.</p><h2><b>Extend Hendrickson Already</b></h2><p>The single best move Cincinnati can make before training camp is simple: sign Hendrickson to an extension. It’s the move that can stabilize the defense and restore organizational momentum.</p><p>The urgency here is amplified by the retirement of veteran Sam Hubbard and the ongoing absence of top pick Stewart. He has yet to join the team due to a dispute over training camp bonuses. That leaves the Bengals perilously thin on the edge. Hendrickson knows that, and he also knows his value.</p><p>Hendrickson led the NFL in sacks last season. He earned All-Pro honors in the process. He’s at the peak of his powers. As such, this is not a situation that calls for cold math. It calls for decisive action.</p><p>Yes, Hendrickson has been vocal about the lack of communication from the front office. That friction has raised questions about whether a deal can even get done. However, recent developments suggest the door is still open.</p><h2><b>Encouraging Signs Behind the Scenes</b></h2><p>In a recent social media post, Hendrickson was spotted training with Patrick Coyne at Black Sheep Performance in Blue Ash. That’s just outside Cincinnati. It’s the same gym frequented by Burrow, Drew Sample, and other Bengals players. This isn’t just about staying in shape; it’s a signal.</p><p>Hendrickson’s presence in the tri-state area ahead of camp shows a level of professionalism that contradicts any narrative of a player trying to force his way out. More importantly, reports indicate that communication between the Bengals and Hendrickson’s camp has resumed. It may not mean a deal is imminent. However, it’s a step in the right direction.</p><p>This is an opportunity Cincinnati simply can’t fumble. Hendrickson isn’t just a sack artist. The guy is a tone-setter. He brings a relentless motor and accountability that every elite defense needs. They’ve done the hard work of securing their offensive nucleus, but now it’s time to balance the ledger. Signing Trey Hendrickson to a well-deserved extension is the perfect move to solidify this roster before training camp. Cincinnati solved one issue by signing Chase and Higgins to record extensions, but it continues to drag its feet with Hendrickson. One NFL insider revealed that one of those situations is far from over.</p><p>Adam Schefter revealed on The Pat McAfee Show that Trey Hendrickson and the Bengals <a href="https://x.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1935382266026537280" rel="noopener">are still not close to a deal</a>.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/bengals-news-trey-hendrickson-talking-with-cincinnati-again-new-contract">Hendrickson and the Bengals resumed communication</a> on Sunday, which gave many fans hope of a quick resolution. Unfortunately, Schefter suggests both sides are not close on compensation and duration of a new contract.</p><p>“They’re talking again, but they’re not any further along. They’re talking, it doesn’t mean a whole lot right now,” Schefter said on Wednesday. “It will mean something if and when they can figure a way to get a deal done, which they have been unable to do. I think there is a disagreement over value and I think most important, there’s a disagreement on length here. Length of deal, I think that’s also an issue here. The Bengals would like a shorter deal, Hendrickson would like a longer deal. And they can’t even find common ground on the length of the deal right now.”</p><p>The length of the contract seems like it could be the biggest consideration.</p><p>McAfee asked if Schefter thinks that Hendrickson wants a contract longer than three years. However, that seems like a bet for the future, with Logan Wilson still in the building.</p><p>Cincinnati boasts an elite offense that can score with anyone, but their ability to compete in the AFC will hinge on whether or not they can take a step forward defensively in 2025. Unfortunately, they haven’t done much to silence those concerns.</p><p>Here we’ll try to look at the two Cincinnati Bengals players who may be in danger of getting cut after their 2025 minicamp.</p><h2><b>1. The Cap Casualty Waiting to Happen?</b></h2><p>When the Bengals signed Zack Moss, it was seen as a solid depth move. The 27-year-old has experience, reliability, and over 3,000 career scrimmage yards to his name. That said, NFL careers can turn quickly. Moss is coming off a season-ending neck injury. In a room that now includes Chase Brown, Samaje Perine, and rookie Tahj Brooks, Moss is running out of runway.</p><p>Brown already <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-news-chase-brown-needs-get-through-pre-game-workout-order-play-steelers">looks like the present and future</a> of the Bengals backfield. The second-year standout rushed for 990 yards in 2024. He averged 4.3 yards per carry and punched in seven rushing touchdowns. He also proved to be a threat in the passing game. Brown is explosive, durable, and still on a rookie contract.</p><p>To bolster that backfield further, the Bengals brought back Perine and used a sixth-round pick on Texas Tech’s Brooks. The latter exited college as the Red Raiders’ all-time leading rusher. Brooks is a physical, downhill runner who brings fresh legs and upside.</p><p>Moss finds himself in a lose-lose scenario. The team has a crowded room and an unforgiving salary cap. The Bengals have already restructured his contract to open up cap space. However, cutting him would free up an additional $2.7 million. With other financial battles looming, Cincinnati may choose flexibility over sentiment.</p><h2><b>2. Flashy, but Floundering</b></h2><p>Wide receiver Jermaine Burton entered the NFL with a resume packed with highlights and expectations. A third-round pick in 2024, Burton brought speed, agility, and big-play potential. As the 2025 season nears, though, his role in Cincinnati’s offense looks less like a contributor and more like an afterthought.</p><p>The writing was already on the wall last season when Burton was a healthy scratch for the season finale. Yes, his rookie struggles might have been forgivable in most cases. That said, his exclusion from a meaningless Week 18 game signaled deeper concerns about consistency, maturity, or both.</p><p>Meanwhile, 2023 sixth-round pick Andrei Iosivas has surged up the depth chart. He has entrenched himself as WR3 behind Chase and Higgins. Tight end Mike Gesicki also commands targets in the short and intermediate zones. The Bengals have built a roster with young talent ready to push veterans out the door. For Zack Moss and Jermaine Burton, that reality is fast approaching. With younger, cheaper, and more dynamic players already climbing the depth chart, these two could become high-profile casualties in Cincinnati’s pursuit of a Super Bowl window.</p><p>The next few weeks of training camp could be make-or-break for both. Thankfully, there are some signs of optimism that one of those situations could be improving.</p><p>The Bengals and Trey Hendrickson <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45517916/sources-bengals-trey-hendrickson-resume-talks-contract" rel="noopener">have resumed communication</a> about his contract and future with the team, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.</p><p>Hendrickson is still determined to get himself a long-term contract extension with the Bengals. He has even <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/bengals-rumors-how-serious-is-trey-hendrickson-about-sitting-out-season">threatened to sit out the 2025 season</a> if his demands are not met.</p><p>This is unquestionably a positive development for the Bengals. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/bengals-rumors-trey-hendrickson-contract-hope-dashed-minicamp-begins">Hendrickson did not participate in the team’s mandatory minicamp</a> this past week. He was subject to nearly $105,000 in fines because of skipping mandatory minicamp.</p><p>Hendrickson made it clear back in May that he was frustrated with the team’s lack of communication surrounding his contract situation.</p><p>“When there’s a lack of communication in any relationship, where it’s a business or personal relationship, lack of communication leads to animosity, and that leaves my narrative only to me with no clear direction,” Hendrickson said in May about his future with the Bengals.</p><p>Perhaps the two sides can work out a deal before training camp after all.</p><h2><b>NFL insider claimed Trey Hendrickson is a priority for the Bengals</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Trey-Hendrickson-to-the-Packers.jpg"><figcaption>© Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It is great that Bengals fans have reason for optimism surrounding Trey Hendrickson.</p><p>NFL insider Peter Schrager <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/bengals-news-trey-hendrickson-not-priority-insider">scolded the Bengals for not prioritizing Hendrickson</a> in a recent interview.</p><p>“I can tell you the Bengals this offseason with two priorities: somehow, some way getting Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase to remain with the Cincinnati Bengals in their free agent contract years,” Schrager said. “And guess what, they did it. Then they get this bomb dropped on them during the combine that Trey Hendrickson wants to be paid $30-40 million. They didn’t budget for that. They didn’t prepare for that.”</p><p>The financial situation could certainly be difficult for the organization to manage. Regardless, Schrager explained that Hendrickson’s situation is difficult because he is truly a fan favorite.</p><p>“This one is sticky because he’s beloved,” Schrager added. “And he’s beloved in the locker room. And the team really likes him. He met his wife in Cincinnati. He had his kid in Cincinnati. He’s saying, look at the market. It doesn’t make sense for what I’m being paid.”</p><p>It would be huge if the Bengals could extend Hendrickson and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/bengals-news-shemar-stewart-leaves-mandatory-minicamp-contract-dispute">sign first-round rookie Shemar Stewart</a> before training camp.</p><p>The front office has about one month to make it happen.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
