What made his preseason breakout even more notable was his insistence that the credit belonged elsewhere. The <a href="https://x.com/NFLSTROUD/status/1956935231392399620" rel="noopener">veteran quarterback pointed</a> to offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, who helped design a simplified game plan that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-news-teddy-bridgewater-shows-hes-still-got-it-with-preseason-td">Bridgewater could execute</a> against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He connected with running back Bucky Irving on a corner route for the opening score, then found rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka on a sliding grab in the back of the end zone.</p><p>“Earlier in the drive, it might have been the previous drive, they had a similar concept and I was telling (quarterbacks coach) Thad (Lewis), ‘I can throw this corner route, but I haven’t thrown corner routes to these guys so I don’t know the timing and their body language and everything like that,” Bridgewater said. “So I missed that opportunity, and I saw the opportunity came up again in man coverage, and I said, ‘You know what? His timing with receivers was not perfect, but he managed the offense with poise and showed why he has remained a valued veteran presence across multiple franchises.</p><p>Head coach Todd Bowles was noncommittal on whether Bridgewater has overtaken Kyle Trask as the primary backup to Baker Mayfield. Trask struggled in Pittsburgh, completing only 3 of 10 passes for 30 yards.</p><p>“We wanted to see (Bridgewater) play,” Bowles said. “We didn’t want to see him playing mop-up time. So we wanted to put him out there, take a look at him, and see where he is. The second year running back is set to take over as the Bucs’ lead back and will certainly be used in both the running and passing games. Mayfield already has a good rapport with Irving. It’s a good thing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buccaneers-news-todd-bowles-lays-out-teddy-bridgewater-preseason-plan">to see Bridgewater’s relationship</a> with the young tailback and other targets grow as well. If Mayfield does go down, will the Buccaneers turn to Bridgewater? He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/teddy-bridgewater-sounds-off-high-school-coaching-suspension-covering-player-expenses">clarified the situation in a Facebook post</a> earlier last month, stating that Miami Northwestern issued the suspension despite him not being officially employed by the school.</p><p>“The suspension came from MNW and it’s impossible to suspend someone who doesn’t work for you,” Bridgewater wrote. “So if I’m suspended from MNW I’m free to go to another school of my choice but I’M NOT GOING ANYWHERE.”</p><p>Bridgewater also added, “If it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.”</p><h2><b>Teddy Bridgewater hopes Buccaneers return inspires former Miami Northwestern players</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Teddy-Bridgewater.jpg"><figcaption>Chet Peterman / Special to The Post / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>In Wednesday’s media session, he elaborated on the difficult nature of stepping away from a team he had bonded with deeply.</p><p>“It was very, it was difficult. I have so many relationships with those young men down in South Florida at Miami Northwestern,” Bridgewater said. “The bonds, the establishment – Leon Strawder, Calvin Russell, Nicholas Lennear, Nicsaint Joseph – just the list goes on and on. It’s a great group of kids, man… you know, they see so much hope when they look at me.”</p><p>Bridgewater said that returning to the NFL serves as a form of inspiration for his players.</p><p>“I think now that I’m back in the league it’s actually going to be motivation for them as well,” he said. “They’ll get to play again on Friday night and probably get to drive across the state and come watch the Bucs play and see coach on the sideline.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-news-teddy-bridgewater-comeback-controversial-high-school-suspension">Bridgewater led Miami Northwestern to a Class 3A state championship</a> in 2024 during his first season as head coach. Colin is also a three-time NYSBA award winner and a proud graduate of Fordham University.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>A player’s NFL journey can include a plethora of twists and turns. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-news-teddy-bridgewater-baker-mayfield-backup">Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater knows this all too well,</a> and he recently opened up about his path to Tampa Bay.</p><p>The 32-year-old signal caller thought he was going to sign with the Buccaneers <a href="https://x.com/NFLSTROUD/status/1953121876173373646" rel="noopener">prior to the 2020 season.</a> But, the franchise ultimately inked former New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady.</p><p>“In 2020, you know, I thought that it was a lock…,” Bridgewater told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “But they got the G.O.A.T., Tom Brady.”</p><p>The Buccaneers won the second Super Bowl in franchise history during Brady’s first season with the team. Across his three seasons in Tampa Bay, Brady totaled 108 touchdowns and 14,643 passing yards.</p><p>Bridgewater signed a three-year, $63 million contract with the Carolina Panthers that offseason, and has made stops with the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, and Detroit Lions since then.</p><p>He recently inked a one-year deal to join Tampa Bay, and Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said that the team’s interest in Bridgewater <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/08/05/sports/teddy-bridgewater-joins-bucs-years-after-he-was-their-tom-brady-plan-b/" rel="noopener">dates back to the 2014 NFL draft.</a></p><p>While the Louisville product was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-news-gm-jason-licht-drops-teddy-bridgewater-tom-brady-revelation"> the Buccaneers were certainly interested.</a></p><p>“We had him in here in 2014 before the draft, there might’ve been a situation where we would’ve taken him if he had fell a little further,” Licht told the New York Post.</p><p>Bridgewater will join <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45906262/qb-teddy-bridgewater-expected-sign-buccaneers" rel="noopener">a relatively young quarterback room</a> that includes Kyle Trask, Michael Pratt, Connor<br>Bazelak, and starter Baker Mayfield.</p><p>“He brings us a wealth of experience at that spot,” Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles told ESPN. “Obviously, we don’t have it. Kyle [Trask] has been here a few years, but he hasn’t really played. Obviously, we have the new guy (Connor Bazelak) just coming in. So, we need the extra arm.
