The upcoming draft will mark the first of the new regime, led by first-year general manager James Gladstone and first-year head coach Liam Coen.</p><p>Jacksonville went just 4-13 in 2024, giving them the No. 5 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. The team gained its influx of late-round selections from previous trades but received zero compensatory picks. However, with 10 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Jaguars have the most draft capital in the league over the next two years.</p><p>Since hiring Coen, Gladstone has already gotten the ball rolling in free agency. Like most rebuilding rosters, the Jaguars were active in free agency, both in adding and removing players. Jacksonville notably <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jaguars-news-jacksonville-8-year-cowboys-veteran-highest-paid-nickel-cb-nfl">signed Jourdan Lewis</a>, Eric Murray, Dyami Brown, Patrick Mekari and Nick Mullens. The team also cleansed itself of veterans Evan Engram, Christian Kirk and Josh Reynolds, while center Mitch Morse retired.</p><p>All factors considered, the Jaguars’ roster is still far superior to the record they had in 2024. They are only three years removed from an AFC South title. Regardless, the frustrating inconsistency over the last decade has the restless fan base desperately hoping the Gladstone-Coen era gets off on the right foot in the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><p>Here is the Jaguars’ seven-round mock draft, according to the <a href="https://www.pff.com/draft/nfl-mock-draft-simulator?ref=3d93cdc6-9be2-4012-8571-c55f775a869e&amp;complete=7&amp;draft_grade=A-&amp;multi=false" rel="noopener">Pro Football Focus NFL Draft simulator</a>.</p><h2><b>Round 1, Pick 5: DT Mason Graham (Michigan)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Mason-Graham-with-Michigan.jpg"><figcaption>Eric Seals / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With their first pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, the PFF mock draft simulator has the Jaguars taking Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham. Considering many rank Graham as a top-three prospect, getting him at No. 5 would be fair value. Graham just wrapped up one of the most dominant careers for a defensive tackle in Michigan football history, ending 2024 with 46 tackles and 3.5 sacks.</p><p>Beyond veteran Arik Armstead, the Jaguars do not have much depth in their interior defensive line. Graham would immediately have a chance to alter the landscape of Jacksonville’s defense, which has had a void in the middle for several years. After years of receiving constant double teams at Michigan, Graham’s presence on the Jaguars’ defensive line would create all sorts of mismatches with Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker beside him. Coen and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile would have to be bursting with anticipation on the potential chaos Graham could create for them.</p><h2><b>Round 2, Pick 36: Edge Nic Scourton (Texas A&amp;M)</b></h2><p>The PFF mock draft simulator has the Jaguars investing in their defensive line again with their second pick and taking Texas A&amp;M edge rusher Nic Scourton. A pure pass-rush specialist, Scourton tallied five sacks in 2024 after racking up 10 with Purdue in 2023. While his numbers and overall production dropped, he still has the size and strength to be an immediate contributor.</p><p>With rumors that the Jaguars could potentially trade former No. 1 pick Travon Walker, the team could need to pursue edge rushers in the near future. Drafting a player like Scourton would fill that need and further the Walker trade rumors. Gladstone potentially has other positions to address this early in the process, but taking Scourton would be a solid long-term play.</p><h2><b>Round 3, Pick 70: LB Carson Schwesinger (UCLA)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Carson-Schwesinger.jpg"><figcaption>Robert Hanashiro-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Jaguars stick to defense in the third round of PFF’s mock draft simulator, taking UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger. The California native was one of the top unexpected breakout stars of 2024, going from 27 total tackles in his first two seasons to 136 as a junior. Schwesinger would provide depth to a positional group that currently only consists of four players.</p><p>Going to the Jaguars would be an ideal scenario for Schwesinger. He would develop behind Foyesade Oluokun and Devin Lloyd, two elite tacklers his game emulates. Campanile’s linebacker background would also make for a great destination. The pairing would be great for both sides, making the UCLA star a very reasonable target in the second or third round.</p><h2><b>Round 3, Pick 88: WR Savion Williams (TCU)</b></h2><p>The Jaguars need a receiver, and the PFF NFL mock draft simulator has them addressing that void in the third round with TCU wideout Savion Williams. In his fifth season in Fort Worth, Williams put up a career-high 611 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He added 322 rushing yards and six additional scores on the ground. Williams is one of the most versatile receivers in the draft, with a Deebo Samuel-like ceiling and the skill set to be used in multiple facets.</p><p>By <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jaguars-news-jacksonville-trades-christian-kirk-texans-instead-releasing-him">trading Christian Kirk</a>, the Jaguars are fully handing the offense over to Brian Thomas Jr. Based on his rookie production, that appears to be the right move. Still, Jacksonville needs additional help at the position, and Williams is an acceptable target. He is not the type of player who will likely ever grow into a No. 1 wideout, but that is not who the Jaguars need him to be. Landing Williams should have fans excitedly anticipating the sets Coen can draw up with him on the team.</p><h2><b>Round 4, Pick 107: S Jonas Sanker (Virginia)</b></h2><p>A three-year starter at Virginia, Jonas Sanker fell two tackles shy of a second consecutive 100-tackle season in 2024. As a physical run-stopper, Sanker would provide depth at strong safety behind Eric Murray, who signed with the team in free agency. With Murray turning 31 in January, Gladstone would be wise to add insurance behind him. At this point in the draft, Sanker would be an acceptable target.</p><p>As good as Sanker’s feel for the game is, his physical results may vary at the next level. His Combine results were all over the board, recording impressive broad jump and 10-second split numbers but disappointing bench press and 40-yard dash stats. Sanker seems more like a special teamer early in his career, which may cause Jacksonville to look elsewhere. Still, the Jaguars’ safety needs are prominent, and Sanker is a high-floor option in the middle rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><h2><b>Round 4, Pick 126 WR Tory Horton (Colorado State)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Travis-Hunter_858001.jpg"><figcaption>Cris Tiller / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With their second fourth-round pick, the Jaguars select a more traditional wide receiver in Tory Horton, according to the PFF NFL 2025 mock draft simulator. Though limited by injuries in 2024, Horton has two 1,000-yard seasons to his name in 2022 and 2023. While his 185-pound frame is a concern, several other small receivers have overcome that narrative in recent years to pave the way for players like Horton.</p><p>There is a high chance the Jaguars will end the 2025 NFL Draft with multiple receivers, as this simulator predicts. Jacksonville desperately needs depth at the position, and the draft is the best source at this stage of the offseason. Had Horton not suffered his injury, he could be a second or third-round prospect. His upside gives him tremendous value in round four, particularly for a team like the Jaguars.</p><h2><b>Round 5, Pick 142: WR Kobe Hudson (UCF)</b></h2><p>The PFF simulator has the Jaguars investing in another receiver, taking a third pass-catcher in four picks. This time, Jacksonville selects Kobe Hudson, who spent his final three years at UCF after transferring from Auburn. Hudson ended his collegiate career with 1,670 receiving yards over his final two seasons with the Knights. At 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Hudson has the ideal size for an NFL wideout but does not have the same ceiling as either Horton or Williams.</p><p>The Jaguars assuredly need to add receivers in the 2025 NFL Draft, but Hudson does not exactly fit the mold of what they are looking for. If they were to take Williams and Hudson as the PFF simulator projects, this pick would be better spent on a tight end, assuming Gladstone takes this heavy of an offensive approach. Jacksonville released Evan Engram shortly after trading Kirk, leaving Brenton Strange the top man of the group. Hudson would not be a bad pick, but this one might be better spent elsewhere.</p><h2><b>Round 6, Pick 182: OT Logan Brown (Kansas)</b></h2><p>The Jaguars do not desperately need a tackle, but the opening is there after they traded Cam Robinson to the Minnesota Vikings during the 2024 season. The Robinson trade opened the door for 2023 first-round pick Anton Harrison, who has impressed, but not necessarily excelled, with the additional opportunity. Drafting Kansas’ Logan Brown in the sixth round is not a bad idea.</p><p>Brown, a former five-star recruit, did not break into the Jayhawks’ starting lineup until his senior season. The limited sample size is worrisome. Hence, his stock is where it currently is. Yet, with above-average size and respectable athleticism, there is a path to meaningful playing time. Brown will likely spend his rookie season as a functional redshirt year, potentially even on a practice squad. He could gain quality reps behind Walker Little and Harrison with the chance to grow into a potential starter down the line.</p><h2><b>Round 6, Pick 194: DT Junior Tafuna (Utah)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Utah-football.jpg"><figcaption>Jamie Sabau-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>If every coach had a player like Junior Tafuna, they would all be happy. The odds of finding a diamond in the rough this late in the draft are slim to none, and Tafuna will not be that guy. Yet, with two second-team All-Pac 12 recognitions to his name, Tafuna has the motor to produce in a limited capacity. He will not become an every-down player, but he can become a quality backup on any roster.</p><p>Tafuna’s best season at Utah came as a freshman when he tallied 33 tackles and 4.5 sacks. As he gained more respect and double-team coverages from opponents, his numbers slowly declined throughout his career. However, Tafuna’s energy and passion never waned. With seven batted passes and two interceptions in his career, Tafuna is a player who drives off pure grit more than skill. There are many worse players the Jaguars could take with their sixth-round pick.</p><h2><b>Round 7, Pick 221: WR Efton Chism III (Eastern Washington)</b></h2><p>As a 5-foot-11, 200-pound receiver from FCS program Eastern Washington, Efton Chism III is one of the more intriguing prospects of the class. He spent five years with the Eagles, which is unique for a typical FCS prospect, but the decision ended up paying off. In his fifth year, Chism showed out with 1,311 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. Those numbers ranked second in the FCS behind just Tarleton State’s Darius Cooper.</p><p>Chism’s lack of athleticism does not make up for his diminutive stature, making it possible he goes undrafted. But there is still more than enough natural talent and production for a team like the Jaguars to take a shot on him late. He will not be the next Puka Nacua, but players with his similar play style and physique have carved out roles for themselves in the league. Wes Welker, Braxton Berrios, Hunter Renfrow and others have recognized extraordinary success considering their pre-draft expectations. Perhaps Chism can join them in history and carve out a role in the slot between Thomas and Gabe Davis on the Jaguars.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The first phases of NFL free agency have come and gone, and while most teams continue to search for bargain players that fit well on the roster, it’s time for the 32 teams in Roger Goodell’s dominion to concentrate on the NFL Draft. That includes the Jacksonville Jaguars.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/jacksonville-jaguars-5-round-post-free-agency-frenzy-2025-nfl-mock-draft-per-pfn-simulator">The Jaguars</a> hired Liam Coen away from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in order to build a more consistent offense. That’s just what the Jaguars should do according to CBS Sports mock draft issued by writer Kyle Stackpole — but only after they use their initial pick on a defensive stalwart.</p><p>In his latest effort, Stackpole has the Jaguars using the No. 5 pick in the first round to select defensive lineman Mason Graham of Michigan. Graham is considered a do-it-all defensive star who can dominate against the run and also provide significant pressure as an interior pass rusher.</p><p>Once that pick is made, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/texans-news-christian-kirk-trade-jaguars-has-houston-fans-fired-up">the Jaguars</a> can go to work on building an improved receiving crew for quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Stackpole has the Jaguars doing that through a proposed trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for the No. 32 and final pick of the first round. The Jaguars should use that pick to select Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka.</p><h2><b>Jaguars need significant help at the WR position</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Emeka-Egbuka-has-proved-his-skills-at-the-college-level.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Jaguars clearly found a quality wide receiver in last year’s draft when they selected Brian Thomas out of LSU, a program that has become something of a machine when it comes to producing quality wide outs. Thomas caught 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. Outside of Thomas, Lawrence does not have much to work with on the receiving front.</p><p>That’s why the latest CBS Sports mock draft effort has the Jaguars selecting Egbuka. The former Buckeye superstar has had a remarkable college career that has seen him play four seasons in Columbus.</p><p>Egbuka is known for his consistency, and he was at his best in the 2024 season when he was the senior leader of the receiving crew. Egbuka was a go-to receiver for head coach Ryan Day and he caught 81 passes for 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was healthy throughout the season and played in all 16 games for the national champions.</p><p>Egbuka was limited to 10 games in 2023 when he caught 41-515-4. He had been dominant as a sophomore when he caught 74-1,151-11.</p><p>Egbuka can line up at any wide receiver position and contribute. If the Jaguars have both Allen and Egbuka in the lineup, Lawrence may have one of the most dependable wide receiver duos in the NFL at his disposal.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

ESPN insiders <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/44249852/nfl-free-agency-2025-experts-big-questions-signings-trades-contracts" rel="noopener">are having a field day</a> with the decision.</p><p>“He can play in split-field coverages, and Murray has the demeanor to operate near the line of scrimmage. Plus, he can contribute to all four core special teams units,” Matt Bowen said, per ESPN. “But with only three interceptions in 124 career games, the Jags overpaid for the 31-year-old on a three-year, $22.5 million deal.”</p><p>Bowen isn’t alone in feeling this was the wrong move.</p><p>“The Jags needed to upgrade their defense, especially at secondary after ranking among the league’s worst against the pass in 2024,” national NFL reporter Lindsey Thiry said. “However, this three-year, $22.5 million price tag seems steep given Murray’s lack of production. Perhaps first-year general manager James Gladstone and Coen value Murray’s intangibles and versatility more than his ability to make plays on the ball.”</p><p>NFL analyst Field Yates was a bit easier on the team, but still critiqued that decision.</p><p>“A lower-tier value like this isn’t crippling, but I thought Jacksonville might lean younger under new leadership,” Yates said.</p><p>The Jaguars and their fans certainly hope the move pays off this coming season. Denver finds a talented tight end to help Bo Nix and the offense improve for next season.</p><p>“Former Jaguars TE Evan Engram is signing with the Broncos on a 2-year deal, per agent Mike McCartney.”</p><p>Evan Engram is coming to Denver after <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1899919851751374977" rel="noopener">signing a two-year, $23 million contract</a>, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. $16.5 million is fully guaranteed for the star tight end.</p><p>“Compensation update: The Broncos are signing TE Evan Engram to a two-year, $23 million deal that includes $16.5 million fully guaranteed at signing, per The Insiders. Engram gets a new home, and Sean Payton gets his ‘Joker.'”</p><p>Engram played for the Jaguars for three seasons before the team decided to let him go to free agency. His first two years in Jacksonville were solid, as he provided consistent production. However, the 2024 campaign wasn’t as kind, as Engram missed eight games after suffering a season-ending torn labrum.</p><p>He ended the season with 47 receptions, 385 yards, and a touchdown. When news broke of his release from Jacksonville, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-evan-engram-farewell-goes-viral">Evan Engram sent the fanbase a farewell message</a>. He is expected to be picked in the top 10, with many analysts assuming that he will fall no further than Jacksonville.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/michigan-football-news-mason-graham-predicted-tumble-down-draft-boards-after-disappointing-combine">Graham does not have ideal measurables</a>, but his strong instincts, quickness, and tenacity more than make up for it. He will become a day one starter for the Jaguars.</p><p>The Jaguars invest another premium pick in a defensive tackle, using their second-round pick on Toledo’s Darius Alexander.</p><p>Alexander is a strong defensive tackle who can hold up in run defense and get after the quarterback. There is a lot to like about Alexander, though none of his production or physical traits will blow you away compared to other prospects.</p><p>Most draft analysts view Alexander as a project who could develop into a better player with proper coaching. As a rookie, he projects as a rotational player on the defensive line. Thankfully, the Jaguars have players like DaVon Hamilton and Maason Smith who can start ahead of him.</p><p>Next, the Jaguars add depth at edge rusher with South Carolina’s Kyle Kennard.</p><p>Kennard’s biggest weapon is his speed. Keenard is also a project, though he boasts enough speed and pass rush acumen to earn a role as a third-down specialist as a rookie. He does not need to do much in 2025 thanks to Joshua Hines-Allen and Travon Walker.</p><p>The Jaguars address the offensive line with Marcus Mbow.</p><p>Mbow boasts positional versatility, giving the Jaguars options on where to play him. He <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/marcus-mbow/32004d42-4f41-5291-1b18-972b1a1ef9ec" rel="noopener">played two seasons at right guard before kicking over to right tackle</a> for the 2024 season. Mbow is an athletic offensive lineman who has great instincts and the speed to get where he needs to be ASAP. He projects as an intriguing swing tackle at worst with some impressive upside. I think Jacksonville got him at a bargain in the third round.</p><p>The Jaguars also add Kansas running back Devin Neal. One of the best parts of Neal’s resume is his steady level of production throughout his collegiate career. Neal has never put up fewer than 700 rushing yards per season.</p><p>He does not boast impressive measurables, but Neal is a smart running back who will take whatever an opposing defense gives him. As such, he projects as a backup running back who could work well as part of a committee.</p><p>The Jaguars pick up a pair of depth players with their final selections of this five-round mock.</p><p>Kiser will enter the NFL at 25 years old and projects as primarily a special teamer. He comes from a football family and has strong instincts, but is not an exceptional athlete.</p><p>The Jaguars also take a chance at an older rookie in Tyler Batty. He has impressive character and is a solid athlete. The versatile lineman is capable of playing tackle, guard and even center. First, the Jaguars signed defensive back Eric Murray <a href="https://x.com/MJD/status/1899165923262840955" rel="noopener">to a three-year contract</a> worth $22.5 million, according to Maurice Jones-Drew of NFL Network.</p><p>Shortly after that deal was announced, the Jaguars <a href="https://x.com/MikeGarafolo/status/1899174025038897170" rel="noopener">agreed to a deal</a> with free agent wide receiver Dyami Brown that is worth $10 million, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.</p><p>Murray is an intriguing piece that can do a lot of different things in the secondary and should immediately be a contributor to the back end of the Jaguars’ defense. He played in all 17 games for the Houston Texans last season and put together one of the best years of his career with 75 tackles, a career-high 10 pass breakups and an interception.</p><p>Murray primarily plays safety, but can bump down and play in the box as more of a nickel player as well. He also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns during his career.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/3-commanders-cut-candidates-entering-2025-offseason">Brown is an intriguing piece</a> who will be extra motivated to show out next season on a one-year “prove-it” contract. Brown is getting a substantial raise from his rookie deal last year after the best season of his young career.</p><p>During the regular season, Brown set career-highs in catches (30), yards (308) and first downs (13). The lineman in question comes from the Baltimore Ravens, where he served as a starter to protect Lamar Jackson up front.</p><p>On Monday, it was announced that the Jaguars <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1899179364236906520" rel="noopener">reached an agreement</a> with offensive lineman Patrick Mekari, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 27-year-old former Raven is set to sign a three-year $37.5 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.</p><p>“Source: Jaguars reached agreement with former Ravens OL Patrick Mekari.”</p><p>Mekari is an incredibly diverse lineman, as he played all five positions for the Ravens during his six seasons with the franchise. He mainly served as a right tackle, however, he played as a starter at each position in five or more games except for right guard.</p><p>The newly acquired Jaguar played well for the Ravens last season. He played 998 offensive snaps and only allowed one sack. However, he drew 14 penalties, which was tied for the most in the league. Jacksonville will want to clean up Mekari’s penalty issues if they hope to get the most out of him.</p><p>The Jaguars allowed 32 sacks last season, which tied them for seventh least in the league with the Indianapolis Colts. Jacksonville adds a solid player to the offensive line in the hopes of maintaining success up front to protect Lawrence.</p><p>Ultimately, the franchise is retooling the team to fit new head coach Liam Coen’s scheme. Coen comes in as the replacement for Doug Pederson, as the Jaguars finished the 2024 campaign with a 4-13 record. Jacksonville also found a new general manager in James Gladstone, who replaced Trent Baalke.</p><p>The front office will have to find a new weapon for Lawrence as well, after trading Christian Kirk to the Houston Texans. They also moved on from star tight end Evan Engram after releasing him from the roster. Then, in a surprise move, Jacksonville continued cleaning house by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-shockingly-release-evan-engram">releasing tight end Evan Engram</a>.</p><p>While the decision to cut the two-time Pro Bowler caught many NFL fans off guard, Engram appears to be <a href="https://x.com/eazyengram/status/1897823425428672570" rel="noopener">embracing the change</a>.</p><p>“It’s all love Jax. But they just let a mf dog loose! Excited for what’s next! #BeEazy,” Engram wrote on his official X account.</p><p>Engram was entering the final, non-guaranteed year of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-editorials/grading-evan-engrams-3-year-41-million-extension-jaguars">three-year, $41.25 million deal</a> he signed with the team prior to the 2023 season. Then they finally fired Baalke and hired head coach Liam Coen <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-liam-coen-buccaneers-face-jacksonville-contract-agreement">out from under the Buccaneers</a>, who thought he’d be back as the highest-paid offensive coordinator in football.</p><p>Next, Jacksonville hired Woody Johnson’s teenage son <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-james-gladstone-on-parallels-jaguars-rams">34-year-old James Gladstone</a>, the youngest GM in the NFL (who seems to be shadowbanned by Wikipedia for some reason). Gladstone has taken a scalpel – or maybe a hatchet – to the Jaguars’ roster, <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/jaguars-to-cut-te-evan-engram-wr-josh-reynolds-wr-devin-duvernay-cb-ronald-darby" rel="noopener">cutting</a> Engram, Devin Duvernay, Josh Reynolds and Ronald Darby in addition to moving on from Kirk, per ProFootballTalk.</p><p>While some of these moves appear to be counterintuitive to surrounding potential franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence with talent, the Jaguars did manage to hit big on 2024 first-round pick Brian Thomas Jr., who exploded on the scene in his rookie year with 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns.</p><p>As for Engram, it’s possible the team simply believes 2023 second-rounder Brenton Strange is ready to take over as Jacksonville’s top tight end. He’s certainly the cheaper option of the two. And he had a reasonably successful sophomore season with 40 receptions for 411 yards and two scores.</p><p>It can honestly be difficult to tell when things are going well or badly in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-liam-coen-clowned-online-duval-fail">dooo-Vhaaaal</a>. But the bottom line is, Coen and Gladstone let Engram off his leash and, as you’d expect from a “mf dog,” he’s excited.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His in-depth knowledge of two of the most passionate and raucous fan bases in the country gives him a truly unique writing voice.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Houston Texans</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars are on two different trajectories coming out of the 2024-25 NFL campaign, with the former snagging their second straight AFC South title and the latter winning just four games. But they are each in the midst of a pivotal offseason. The Texans need to build the most balanced roster possible before beginning contract talks with C.J. Stroud next year, while the Jags must find a new identity around Trevor Lawrence.</p><p>Thursday’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-jacksonville-trades-christian-kirk-texans-instead-releasing-him">Christian Kirk trade</a> might help both teams accomplish those respective goals. Jacksonville traded the seven-year wide receiver to Houston for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick, which originally belonged to the Los Angeles Rams. The Jaguars planned to release him but secured a deal with their divisional rival instead, as they enter free agency with a ton of financial flexibility.</p><p>Although Kirk has missed a combined 14 games the last two seasons and is set to carry a $24 million cap hit into 2025-26, he is still a solid slot WR who can potentially become a key safety net for Stroud. The former Texas A&amp;M standout is only 28 years of age and averaged 14.0 yards per reception in eight 2024 games, so there is always a chance he enjoys a resurgence in Space City.</p><p>As stated before, these two franchises are in different spots at the moment, making it difficult to assign grades to this trade. We will do so, anyway, though. It is important to consider the possible short-term and long-term effects of the Kirk move, something that is of interest to both fan bases in the always busy month of March. Let’s get started.</p><h2><b>Texans Trade Grade: B</b></h2><p>Houston general manager Nick Caserio traded a seventh-round draft pick for Joe Mixon last offseason in an effort to upgrade the backfield, and now he is shipping out the same trade value with the purpose of fortifying the team’s wide receiver depth. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/houston-texans/texans-news-gm-opens-door-stefon-diggs-return-free-agency">Stefon Diggs is a free agent</a> and coming off a torn ACL, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/houston-texans/texans-tank-dell-gets-encouraging-injury-update-but-theres-a-catch">Tank Dell has an even longer road to recovery</a> after suffering a gruesome knee injury last season. Simply put, the Texans need pass-catchers.</p><p>Kirk’s 2024-25 campaign also ended prematurely after he underwent surgery in October to repair a broken collarbone, but when healthy, the veteran is a reliable complimentary receiver. He recorded 84 catches for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns in a career-best 2022-23 season and would have likely eclipsed 1,000 yards the following year if he stayed on the field.</p><p>Superb rookie Brian Thomas Jr. pushed Kirk out of a prominent role in the first half of 2024-25, and the aforementioned collarbone injury denied him a chance at a fall and winter surge. Consequently, his stock declined precipitously heading into this offseason. Houston was just offensively-depleted enough to make Jacksonville an offer, however.</p><p>The organization had only $14.4 million in cap space to start the day, limiting its ability to add a superior talent like DK Metcalf, who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/seattle-seahawks/seahawks-news-dk-metcalf-hits-seattle-trade-request">requested a trade from the Seattle Seahawks</a> earlier this week. The Texans went a cheaper route with Kirk, but the deal is still potentially costly.</p><p>And that is why I am only stamping a B on Caserio’s report card. While the fifth-year GM opted not to engage in a bidding war for the 2018 second-rounder, the current contract is presumably more expensive than the one Kirk would have commanded in free agency. Moving with haste can be both shrewd and desperate, and that seems to be the case here.</p><p>Nevertheless, C.J. Stroud now has a solid No. 2 target behind Pro Bowler Nico Collins. If management negotiates a restructured deal to lower the cap hit, fans will have even more reason to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/houston-texans/texans-news-christian-kirk-trade-jaguars-has-houston-fans-fired-up">feel good about the trade</a>.</p><h2><b>Jaguars Trade Grade: B<br></b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Jaguars-GM-James-Gladstone-speaks-at-the-Scouting-Combine.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Jags were active on Thursday, to say the least. In addition to moving Christian Kirk, they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-shockingly-release-evan-engram">released tight end Evan Engram</a>, return specialist Devin Duvernay and wide receiver Josh Reynolds. The new regime, led by general manager James Gladstone, now has $60 million in cap space. Finding a way to get draft compensation for Kirk should be a welcome bonus during this cost-cutting-a-Palooza.</p><p>But Jacksonville is taking a risk by handing Kirk over to an AFC South foe, one that boasts a 9-3 divisional record over the last two years. While the front office’s primary focus is to obtain anything possible for a player it is going to release, it is less than ideal to help Houston fill a glaring hole.</p><p>The football gods perk up when such a scenario presents itself, and that is a concerning thought given that they have not been too keen on the Jaguars of late. Fans will groan if a healthy Kirk thrives with the Texans and punishes their squad twice next season. If you remove that hypothetical malaise out of the equation, however, it is reasonable to be optimistic about Jacksonville’s future.</p><p>Gladstone has the means to build a formidable roster around quarterback Trevor Lawrence, which could possibly include Metcalf as a Kirk replacement. If he uses the team’s resources wisely, this franchise should compete for an AFC South crown in 2025-26.</p><p>I know it seems like a cop-out to give the Jaguars and Texans the same trade grade, but it just feels right. Depending on how Houston rectifies Kirk’s big cap number and the Jaguars fill his slot, this transaction could look much better for either or both sides. As of now, though, they each get solid marks for making a fairly rational gamble less than a week before free agency begins.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
