It was the perfect tune-up for Underwood, as the five-star signal caller looks to be the next great Michigan football quarterback. While the New Mexico was an easier opener for Underwood and his teammates, Oklahoma waits for them this coming Saturday. Ahead of the <a href="https://x.com/CSayf23/status/1962949792553910300" rel="noopener">massive Week 2 tilt,</a> Sooners head coach Brent Venables compared Underwood to former Clemson star Trevor Lawrence. On3’s Clayton Sayfie revealed Venables’ take via X (formerly Twitter).</p><p>“He’s a guy that, man, he’s a little different.,” Venables said to press, including Sayfie, Tuesday. “He reminds me a lot of Trevor Lawrence — just quick, decisive, accurate, poised, tough, consistent. There’s a reason he was the No. 1 player in America, and he’s got a maturity and a work ethic and leadership ability to go along with that.”</p><p>The praise from Venables is certainly warranted, as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/michigan-football-news-sherrone-moore-makes-hilarious-bryce-underwood-request-after-debut">Underwood showed plenty of flashes</a> during the season opening win to cause concern for the Oklahoma head coach. The former Clemson defensive coordinator had a front row seat to just how good Lawrence was. Even as a freshman with the Tigers, it was clear that the former No.1 recruit (as well as NFL Draft top pick) would be a star. It looks as if Underwood is on his way towards that level as well. After winning the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship, the Michigan football program backslid in Moore’s first season. Jacksonville followed that hire with a series of bold offseason moves that has the team looking frisky ahead of the 2025 season. If Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence takes another step forward this fall, the Jaguars could become a problem in the AFC.</p><p>Coen has been working with Lawrence on his footwork all offseason. He <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46096920/jacksonville-jaguars-quarterback-trevor-lawrence-travis-hunter-coach-liam-coen" rel="noopener">explained how improved footwork</a> could fix Lawrence’s game during a recent interview.</p><p>“The drop of a quarterback is very similar to a dance, and so each song, right, has a different rhythm,” Coen said. “Each play has a different rhythm. Each system has different rhythms.”</p><p>As Coen describes it, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-key-trevor-lawrence-adjustment-liam-coen-made">Lawrence’s footwork has been the main focus</a> ahead of the 2025 season. Jacksonville’s coaching staff believes Lawrence’s feet were often out of position earlier in his career.</p><p>“The footwork, that repetitive delivery, the guys who consistently make the plays have the base footwork, delivery, motion and it’s reliable,” said one of Lawrence’s former coaches, who requested anonymity…. When [Lawrence has] had trouble, it’s when it’s a combo of not making quick decisions and then he tries to deliver the ball late with inconsistent footwork. But [there’s] so much talent there he’s been able to make it work at times.”</p><p>Jacksonville is hopeful that Coen can work his magic on Lawrence and turn his career around. Just like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/bucs-news-how-tampa-bay-revitalized-baker-mayfield-career-playoff-run-todd-bowles">he did with Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay</a>.</p><p>Lawrence’s footwork, and overall play, will be under the microscope this fall.</p><h2><b>Jaguars insider makes important Trevor Lawrence observation during preseason</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Lawrence-throws.jpg"><figcaption>Matthew Hinton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Another factor that could help Lawrence develop good footwork is a clean pocket.</p><p>Lawrence has not had many clean pockets during his career in Jacksonville. But it appears that could be changing.</p><p>ESPN’s Michael DiRocco made an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-insider-important-trevor-lawrence-preseason-observation">important observation about Lawrence’s protection</a> back in the middle of August.</p><p>“One thing I’ve noticed in the first two preseason games: Trevor Lawrence has been able to step up in the pocket. Last year, the team suffered an injury scare in the form of a Trevor Lawrence concussion after a dirty hit by the Houston Texans, but thankfully, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-trevor-lawrence-100-real-playing-preseason">Lawrence is back</a> and ready to go for the upcoming 2025 year.</p><p>Recently, the team has been participating in training camp and preseason games as they prepare for the season, and ESPN NFL insider Michael DiRocco made <a href="https://x.com/ESPNdirocco/status/1957127188383166628" rel="noopener">an important observation</a> pertaining to the Jaguars offensive line’s ability to give Lawrence more time in the pocket.</p><p>“One thing I’ve noticed in the first two preseason games: Trevor Lawrence has been able to step up in the pocket. Hadn’t been much space for that the past two seasons,” DiRocco reported on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Offensive line play indeed has been an area of concern for the Jaguars over the last couple of seasons, as Lawrence often hasn’t had adequate time to read defenses and wait for his wide receivers’ routes to materialize.</p><p>If this seemingly improved offensive line play in the preseason is an indication of things to come during the regular year, the Jaguars could be poised for an impressive season.</p><h2><b>A big offseason for the Jaguars</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Travis-Hunter-4.jpg"><figcaption>Travis Register-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The biggest story for the Jaguars this offseason occurred in late April when the team drafted standout wide receiver and cornerback hybrid Travis Hunter out of Colorado. He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Jacksonville Jaguars</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-how-travis-hunter-played-nfl-2-way-debut">Jacksonville Jaguars are currently gearing up</a> for their second preseason game of the 2025 campaign, which will take place on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints on the road. There has been debate as to whether star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-fans-react-first-trevor-lawrence-travis-hunter-connection">players like Trevor Lawrence</a> or other key pieces around the league should be risking their bodies during preseason, which prompted the NFL to shorten the preseason schedule in recent years.</p><p>Lawrence is expected to play for at least some of the afternoon against New Orleans, and recently, the former number one overall pick <a href="https://x.com/Jaguars/status/1956037143446409518" rel="noopener">got 100% real</a> on why he thinks it’s important to play during preseason.</p><p>“It’s just another opportunity for us to get better,” said Lawrence, per the Jaguars’ official team account on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Lawrence also played some during the Jaguars’ first preseson game of 2025 at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing six of his seven pass attempts, good for 43 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.</p><h2><b>Can the Jaguars compete?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/771877860-travis-hunter-training-camp.jpg"><figcaption>Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Last year was, for the most part, a trainwreck for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville saw regression around the roster and missed the playoffs for a second straight year after their surprise trip to the AFC divisional round back in 2022-23.</p><p>Making matters worse was the scary concussion that Lawrence suffered on a dirty hit last season that sidelined him for multiple weeks.</p><p>However, the Jaguars were rewarded for their ineptitude with the number two overall pick in this past year’s NFL Draft, which they used to select Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter out of Colorado.</p><p>Hunter became known for playing both the cornerback and wide receiver positions during his time in college, and while the team is still ironing out the details of what his workload will look like at the NFL level, it’s certainly on the table that Hunter continues to play both offense and defense for the Jaguars.</p><p>In any case, after the game against the Saints, the Jaguars will have one more preseason game–on the road against the Miami Dolphins–before their regular season gets underway on September 7 at home against the Carolina Panthers.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The wideout had an exceptional rookie season. Both young stars connected on the Jaguars’ first preseason possession against the Steelers. Despite the hype surrounding the team, this year is a make-or-break campaign for the Jaguars’ quarterback. The former No. 1 pick has received a lot of criticism over the past two seasons for falling short of expectations. With weapons like Hunter and Thomas Jr. at his disposal, Lawrence is out of excuses.</p><p>Hunter’s first catch came on offense, but the two-way player expects to play both receiver and corner this season. Jacksonville said the team plans to use him more as a receiver, though. Regardless, Hunter will do something this season the league hasn’t seen since his former college coach, Deion Sanders.</p><p>Hunter is one of the favorites to win Rookie of the Year this season.
