With only 53 spots available, tough decisions will have to be made by a general manager and the coaching staff. That was the case for the San Francisco 49ers, who had to cut 2021 third-rounder Trey Sermon in favor of undrafted rookie Jordan Mason.</p><p>It’s never easy cutting a player who you just drafted a year earlier. It becomes a lot harder when you traded up to draft said player. However, 49ers general manage John Lynch just couldn’t deny that Mason played a lot better than Sermon in the preseason. Here’s the “bottom line” according to the GM. (<a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/49ers/article/49ers-Lynch-Trey-Sermon-s-fate-was-sealed-17414103.php">via San Francisco Chronicle</a>)</p><p>“The bottom line, J.P. Mason just played too well,” Lynch said. “And we felt like he made our team better … We got this kid out of Georgia Tech as a backup. And we couldn’t deny at the end of the day that he hadn’t earned a spot on the roster.”</p><p>The numbers speak for themselves: during the 49ers’ preseason games, both Mason and Sermon got 19 touches each. Sermon had 39 yards on those touches. As for Mason? He more than doubled Sermon’s numbers, running for 94 yards on the ground. It was abundantly clear that J.P Mason would be a better choice for the team.</p><p>As for Trey Sermon, his NFL career isn’t over yet. The Eagles were reportedly interested in him during their training camp. Once Sermon was released by the 49ers, he was immediately picked up by Philly. Boston Scott got his fair share of touches, too.</p><p>With three guys likely ahead of him on the depth chart, Sermon’s path to finding minutes may not be easy. But if he can make an impact with the opportunities given, perhaps Eagles HC Nick Sirianni could use him more.</p><p>Philadelphia is one of the most intriguing teams in the league heading into the 2022 campaign. Shanahan <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/49ers-kyle-shanahan-explains-why-trey-sermon-isnt-involved-offense">provided details on Sermon’s progress</a> thus far during Wednesday’s press conference.</p><blockquote>“Yeah, you guys have asked that a lot and right now, it’s nothing against Trey,” Shanahan said when asked what he needed to see out of the rookie for him to get more snaps.”Trey had an opportunity when guys got hurt and I thought he got better in each game with that. But he didn’t do enough for us to put him ahead of Elijah or Jeff. And so it’s pretty much as simple as that, like if Jeff wasn’t out there or Elijah wasn’t, he would have taken one of those roles.</blockquote><p>The 49ers moved up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Sermon. Yet, it has been 6th round rookie running back Elijah Mitchell that has taken hold of the starting job.</p><p>Sermon has been a healthy scratch twice, and has registered only 31 carries for 135 yards. Meanwhile, Mitchell leads the team with 560 yards rushing. Mitchell got the chance after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-raheem-mostert-season-ending-knee-surgery/" rel="noopener">Raheem Mostert suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first week of the season.</a></p><p>Jeff Wilson Jr. has been in the mix for the 49ers for the last couple seasons. He filled in admirably last year when starters got hurt. Wilson Jr. rushed for 183 yards in a Week 16 matchup vs the division rival Arizona Cardinals. He has since branched out into all aspects of sports media.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Many were surprised when San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Trey Sermon was a healthy scratch for their Week 1 contest against the Detroit Lions.</p><p>After Raheem Mostert suffered a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-raheem-mostert-season-ending-knee-surgery/">season-ending knee injury</a>, Kyle Shanahan and Co. have made their decision on Sermon for Week 2 after he showed “extra aggressiveness” this week for the 49ers, <a href="https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/09/17/49ers-say-trey-sermon-will-be-active-this-weekend/">per ProFootballTalk</a>.</p><blockquote>“So what that told me is, ‘Hey, I didn’t like not dressing. I want to play football. So how do I do that? I don’t go and talk to people. I show people,’” McDaniel said, via Matt Barrows of TheAthletic.com. “That’s kind of the common denominator. Kyle always says to the players and coaches, ‘Don’t tell me, show me.’ And [Sermon] showed, I think, all of us that he really wants an opportunity, which he’ll get this Sunday.”</blockquote><p>Sermon was a third-round pick by the 49ers out of Ohio State and the rookie raised eyebrows with his excellent showings in the offseason. After being a healthy inactive in Week 1, he has clearly flipped the switch and the 49ers noticed.</p><p>San Francisco could take a large running back by committee approach with Mostert out for the year. It appears for now that Elijah Mitchell could see a lot of the carries for the 49ers after running for over 100 yards against the Lions in Week 1.</p><p>With Sermon now in the fold, it just adds another layer to the already dynamic offense that Shanahan has to work with for the 49ers.
