Now the Saints are ready to make a change at quarterback in the hopes of bringing some life to their offense.</p><p>The Saints are making rookie Tyler Shough <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1983206088636772578" rel="noopener">their new starting quarterback</a>, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.</p><p>Moore informed both Shough and Spencer Rattler of the decision on Tuesday.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-spencer-rattler-benched-tyler-shough-buccaneers">New Orleans benched Rattler for Shough</a> during Sunday’s loss, the first sign that change could be coming soon.</p><p>Moore also said on Monday that he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-kellen-moore-wont-commit-starting-qb-rams-game">would not commit to a starting quarterback</a> before Week 9’s game against the Rams.</p><p>“We’re just not executing and playing at a high enough standard, and we’ve got to find a way to move the football consistently, protect the football and score points,” Moore said via Katherine Terrell of ESPN. “And so, this is a pure full offensive evaluation point. … I think we just got to evaluate this whole thing in the next 48 hours, find the solutions that give us the best chance to win.”</p><p>As often happens in the NFL, Moore decided to make a change soon after that statement.</p><h2><b>Will Tyler Shough be an upgrade over Spencer Rattler?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Spencer-Rattler.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-Imagn Images.</figcaption></figure><p>Rattler was a solid starter for the Saints, though he only managed to lead the team to one win. So will the Saints be better off with their rookie QB?</p><p>The Saints got some decent production out of Rattler, who mostly played mistake-free football over his eight-game stretch as a starter. He logged 1,586 passing yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions.</p><p>New Orleans is clearly in a rebuilding season, so the expectations may not be that high for Shough. As long as he shows signs of improvement, the Saints will likely be pleased that they made a change at quarterback.</p><p>That said, Rattler did not set the bar very high himself. So it is entirely possible that Shough is an immediate upgrade.</p><p>But Shough will face a tough test in Week 9 as he makes his first start as an NFL quarterback.</p><p>Saints at Rams kicks off at 4:05PM ET on Sunday.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They were hoping to gain a bit of confidence after back to back losses. However, quarterback Spencer Rattler did not put his best foot forward. And it will now be up to rookie Tyler Shough the rest of the way.</p><p>Rattler completed 15 passes for 139 yards against the Tampa defense. Unfortunately, he was sacked three times while also throwing an interception. Head coach Kellen Moore has seen enough, as <a href="https://x.com/Saints/status/1982569063244275925" rel="noopener">he has benched</a> Rattler. Shough took over, looking to overcome a 17-3 deficit and spark the offense.</p><p>The Saints picked up their first win of the season quite recently. They defeated the New York Giants 26-14 a few weeks back. However, that win has done little to cover up what’s turned out to be a miserable season. New Orleans lost their first four games. And they are on track to lose a third straight following the Giants win.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-new-orleans-drafts-tyler-shough-not-shedeur-sanders-no-40">New Orleans drafted Shough in the second round</a> of the 2025 NFL Draft. His selection came <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-derek-carrs-brother-eye-opening-take-qbs-retirement">on the heels of Derek Carr’s retirement</a> before the draft. Shough immediately entered into a competition with Rattler for the starting role.</p><p>Rattler has seen most of the playing time under center. The second-year signal caller entered Week 8 having completed 159 passes, throwing for 1450 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions.</p><p>The Saints are trying to climb out of a major hole. New Orleans still has football left to play. And this year can be salvaged to some extent. New Orleans could look a lot different when the regular season kicks off in a few weeks. The most noticeable change should be the starting quarterback position.</p><p>Moore declared on Saturday that the team <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46059945/saints-qb-decision-likely-next-days-kellen-moore-says" rel="noopener">will decide on their starting QB</a> “at some point in the next few days.”</p><p>Rookie Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler are in the running to win the starting job. Both players <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-qb-competition-tyler-shough-spencer-rattler-really-close">have been in close competition</a> throughout training camp and the preseason.</p><p>Moore and his coaches will study the film after their 28-19 loss against the Broncos on Saturday.</p><p>“I think it’s important that we collaborate and talk through this thing. That’s an important aspect of this thing. Everyone’s got their different perspectives and different exposures and so that would be really, really important,” Moore said per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell. “Ultimately, I know I have to make a decision and it’s a challenging one because these guys have put everything into this. They’ve been very, very close.”</p><p>Judging just by Saturday’s game, Shough could have the edge in the competition.</p><p>He was clearly the better quarterback against Denver. He went 12-of-20 for 102 passing yards, the most on the team. Shough also added two carries for 20 yards and a touchdown on the ground.</p><h2><b>Saints not looking to add veteran QB before regular season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Kellen-Moore.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Moore noted that the Saints’ coaching staff has already had some healthy discussions about the team’s starting quarterback position.</p><p>“I’m not going to get into the voting ballots [like] ‘Big Brother’ or something with ballots every week,” Moore noted. “It’s been a great discussion. We’ve got the right guys in the room.”</p><p>One thing Moore was definitive on was his confidence in the team’s quarterback room. He confirmed that the Saints do not plan to add a veteran QB before the regular season.</p><p>“We feel great about this group. We’ve invested and poured a lot into these guys,” Moore concluded. “These guys are young guys. They’re going to keep growing each and every day and we’re excited to see where this thing goes for all of them.”</p><p>It won’t be long before Saints fans learn who their new starting quarterback is.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/schedule">Saints kick off the regular season</a> at home against the Cardinals on September 7th.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The battle has seemingly come down to either Spencer Rattler or rookie Tyler Shough, with Week 1 less than three weeks away.</p><p>Ahead of the team’s final preseason game, head coach Kellen Moore believes the battle is <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1957906119042466000" rel="noopener">still up in the air</a>. Moore said that the decision is “really, really close,” according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.</p><p>Moore chose Rattler to start the Saints’ first preseason game before giving Shough the nod in their second outing. Each player has seen the field in both games, with neither particularly impressing enough to separate himself.</p><p>While Rattler started the preseason opener, it was Shough who had the better game, throwing for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Los Angeles Chargers. They swapped roles in game two, with Rattler playing better off the bench, recording 199 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Jacksonville Jaguars.</p><p>Former fourth-round pick Jake Haener has seemingly disappeared from the competition. The injury-prone Haener was always on the outside looking in and did not play in New Orleans’ second preseason game after attempting just eight passes against the Chargers.</p><h2><b>Saints’ quarterback battle between Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Kellen-Moore.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>On paper, Rattler seems to have the advantage in all areas. He is the dual-threat quarterback with more NFL experience and is the younger player, despite entering the league a year before Shough. However, the team has invested more in Shough, selecting him in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/saints-news-new-orleans-drafts-tyler-shough-not-shedeur-sanders-no-40">second round of the 2025 NFL Draft</a>.</p><p>As a former quarterback, Moore has historically been adept at coaching the position. Offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier has also been touted for his work with signal-callers, notably guiding the likes of Dak Prescott and Justin Herbert in the NFL after coaching A.J. McCarron, Drew Stanton and Jake Locker in college.</p><p>Regardless of which player begins the year under center, the Saints are likely headed for another rebuild year. With the influx of quarterback prospects available in the 2026 NFL Draft, New Orleans fans might need to be patient for one more season before the team finds its true franchise player.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
