New Orleans could look a lot different when the regular season kicks off in a few weeks. The most noticeable change should be the starting quarterback position.</p><p>Moore declared on Saturday that the team <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46059945/saints-qb-decision-likely-next-days-kellen-moore-says" rel="noopener">will decide on their starting QB</a> “at some point in the next few days.”</p><p>Rookie Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler are in the running to win the starting job. Both players <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-qb-competition-tyler-shough-spencer-rattler-really-close">have been in close competition</a> throughout training camp and the preseason.</p><p>Moore and his coaches will study the film after their 28-19 loss against the Broncos on Saturday.</p><p>“I think it’s important that we collaborate and talk through this thing. That’s an important aspect of this thing. Everyone’s got their different perspectives and different exposures and so that would be really, really important,” Moore said per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell. “Ultimately, I know I have to make a decision and it’s a challenging one because these guys have put everything into this. They’ve been very, very close.”</p><p>Judging just by Saturday’s game, Shough could have the edge in the competition.</p><p>He was clearly the better quarterback against Denver. He went 12-of-20 for 102 passing yards, the most on the team. Shough also added two carries for 20 yards and a touchdown on the ground.</p><h2><b>Saints not looking to add veteran QB before regular season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Kellen-Moore.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Moore noted that the Saints’ coaching staff has already had some healthy discussions about the team’s starting quarterback position.</p><p>“I’m not going to get into the voting ballots [like] ‘Big Brother’ or something with ballots every week,” Moore noted. “It’s been a great discussion. We’ve got the right guys in the room.”</p><p>One thing Moore was definitive on was his confidence in the team’s quarterback room. He confirmed that the Saints do not plan to add a veteran QB before the regular season.</p><p>“We feel great about this group. We’ve invested and poured a lot into these guys,” Moore concluded. “These guys are young guys. The battle has seemingly come down to either Spencer Rattler or rookie Tyler Shough, with Week 1 less than three weeks away.</p><p>Ahead of the team’s final preseason game, head coach Kellen Moore believes the battle is <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1957906119042466000" rel="noopener">still up in the air</a>. Moore said that the decision is “really, really close,” according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.</p><p>Moore chose Rattler to start the Saints’ first preseason game before giving Shough the nod in their second outing. Each player has seen the field in both games, with neither particularly impressing enough to separate himself.</p><p>While Rattler started the preseason opener, it was Shough who had the better game, throwing for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Los Angeles Chargers. They swapped roles in game two, with Rattler playing better off the bench, recording 199 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Jacksonville Jaguars.</p><p>Former fourth-round pick Jake Haener has seemingly disappeared from the competition. Malik has worked in entertainment and sports, and he specializes in the NBA and NFL.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">New Orleans Saints</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The New Orleans Saints still do not know who their starting quarterback will be when Week 1 comes around, and there is still a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-new-orleans-makes-qb-decision-jaguars-preseason-matchup">battle brewing between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler</a>. Shough had the opportunity to make a case for the starting job in their second preseason game, as he got the start and finished with 66 passing yards.</p><p>Many <a href="https://x.com/MikeTriplett/status/1957143175128334528" rel="noopener">were left unmoved</a>, including Saints reporter Mike Triplett.</p><p>“Welp. Saints rookie Tyler Shough ends his first-half audition with just three points. Saints will need to have faith in him that goes beyond today’s results if they lean toward him in Week 1,” Triplett wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Shough had some rough moments in the first half, including one possession where he was tripped into a sack, committed an intentional grounding penalty. That put the Saints in a 3rd and 20 situation and backed them up near their own endzone.</p><p>The Saints are going to have to see Shough do more if they want to give him the starting nod, but Rattler may have a better chance of winning the battle. There is still one more preseason game left, and Shough will have to give everything he has in the next week to show that he deserves the starting nod.</p><h2><b>Saints close to naming starting quarterback</b></h2><p>The Saints will have a tough decision coming with who they name the starting quarterback, but it looks like head coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-kellen-moore-nearing-starting-qb-decision-latest">Kellen Moore is close to choosing</a> who will lead the offense.</p><p>“We’re close. We’re close, we’ll get there. These guys are doing awesome,” Moore said on The Up &amp; Adams Show.</p><p><b>“</b>I think it’s just been really balanced,” Moore said. “It’s been a really balanced offseason for those guys. They’ve had great moments. They all have lessons to be learned and that’s part of being young quarterbacks in this league. They’ve done a nice job, we’re excited to let it play out.”</p><p>The Saints will be young at quarterback regardless of who they choose. With Derek Carr announcing his retirement during the offseason, the team had to make some decisions, and one of them was drafting Shough in the first round of the draft. Rattler was drafted by the team last season, and he got the opportunity to play in some games in his rookie year.</p><p>The hope is that either Shough or Rattler can step up in the moment and lead the Saints’ offense this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Spencer Rattler got the start for the Saints in this one, but Shough got plenty of reps as the backup in the 27-13 loss.</p><p>Shough showed both good and bad signs, which is to be expected from a rookie seeing his first game action during the preseason. The second-round pick also got banged up during the game and is suffering from a bruised knee, but he played through it and is <a href="https://x.com/MikeTriplett/status/1954698109453504608" rel="noopener">not concerned moving forward</a> according to Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football.</p><p>“Saints QB Tyler Shough said he bruised his right knee but played through it and didn’t seem concerned after the game,” Triplett reported on X, formerly Twitter after the game.</p><p>Shough finished the game 15-for-22 with 165 yards, one touchdown and an interception. He was also sacked twice and tan the ball once for three yards.</p><p>Overall, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/saints-news-tyler-shough-first-preseason-touchdown-chargers">Shough played on time for the most part</a> and got the ball where it needed to go, including a long touchdown to a wide open Mason Tipton. However, he also threw an ugly pick-six on an out route that was thrown late and inside, one of the biggest no-nos for a quarterback.</p><p>Shough is an older prospect, so the Saints won’t want to see too many of those mistakes due to the fact that he has less hypothetical room to grow than a younger and less polished prospect would. However, it was still a solid debut and should keep him right in contention with Rattler for the starting job as the preseason goes on.</p><p>The Saints were heavily criticized and questioned for taking Shough at No. 40 overall, making him the third quarterback off the board after Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart. However, the Louisville product will have plenty of chances to prove everyone wrong this season and try to cement himself as the quarterback of the future in New Orleans.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
