He flashed major potential in his NFL debut with the Indianapolis Colts, showing promise that his talents will translate at the professional level. Leading up to the Week 2 contest against the Denver Broncos, the opposing defensive coordinator shared which player Warren reminds him of.</p><p>Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph reportedly informed head coach Sean Payton that Warren <a href="https://x.com/ZacStevensDNVR/status/1966241497608761721" rel="noopener">reminds him of</a> New Orleans Saints’ utility man Tayson Hill, according to Zac Stevens of DNVR Sports. Denver is seemingly taking note of what type of versatility Warren brings to the table for the Colts.</p><p>“Vance Joseph told Sean Payton that Tyler Warren has some Taysom Hill to him.”</p><p>Interestingly enough, Sean Payton coached Taysom Hill during his time as the Saints’ head coach. Hill, who is 35 years old, has played as a tight end, quarterback, running back, and wide receiver for the franchise. Hill is currently out after sustaining an ACL tear in December, and his return date is unclear. In college, Warren lined up at tight end and wide receiver. He even played a snap or two as a center on some trick plays for the Nittany Lions.</p><p>Tyler Warren played everywhere at Penn State, as he lined up in multiple positions for the Nittany Lions during his five years with the program. We saw <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/reasons-why-daniel-jones-week-1-explosion-wasnt-fluke">some of that versatility in the Colts’ 33-8 Week 1 win</a> over the Miami Dolphins after the 23-year-old rookie finished with seven receptions for 76 yards off nine targets.</p><p>If the Broncos view Warren as a Taysom Hill-type player, then the defense likely isn’t taking him lightly. Especially considering he was one of the more involved players in the passing game for the Colts in the season opener. Make sure to tune into the Broncos-Colts game on Sunday, September 14. After a training camp battle for the starting quarterback position, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-qb1-anthony-richardson">Daniel Jones won the job</a> and is ready to lead the team. He finished the run with three catches for 43 yards. He could end up having a big game in the first regular game of his career, and that could set the precedent for how he performs for the rest of the year.</p><p>The Colts already had some key pieces on offense who could make a difference this season, but it will all depend on how Jones performs. As some believe the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-will-tyler-warren-follow-in-brock-bowers-footsteps">Colts’ rookie could follow the footsteps of tight end Brock Bowers</a> of the Las Vegas Raiders, one person who has a lot of faith in him is Rob Gronkowski.</p><p>There’s no doubt that Warren will love to hear praise from one of the most productive tight ends in the history of the NFL, as Gronkowski spoke recently about the rookie on The Ryen Russillo podcast. He would go as far as to say that when watching Warren in the preseason, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kdYwafvzFU&amp;t=1717s" rel="noopener">“he kind of reminded me of myself.”</a></p><p>“There’s a player I really, really like who’s a rookie this year who I thought was going to be the first tight end taken,” Gronkowski said. “And it’s Tyler Warren, and I watched him in his first preseason game. He played the first 20 snaps, and he was so good on all levels of the field, and he kind of reminded me of myself. I watched him at Penn State. Subsequently, Gronkowski would speak more about why he enjoys watching Warren a ton, highlighting his route running.</p><p>“[Warren] had three catches in the first quarter for like I don’t know like 50 yards,” Gronkowski said. “He ran my play-action over route, he knew how to get open and get away from the linebackers, he knew the exact target like where to go because it’s a feel route, you know, depending on how much the linebackers bite, he also ran like a Julian Edelman route where you go up five yards and you come back out. I never ran that; I was too slow, I was too big for that. And he ran it to perfection.”</p><p>At any rate, Warren looks to produce in his first season in the NFL after being taken with the 14th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, coming out of Penn State University. The quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones continues, but it looks as if the former fifth overall selection holds a lead in that race. If Richardson Sr. is to finally succeed, he’ll need more targets in the passing game. Luckily for him, the Colts snagged tight end Tyler Warren in the first round. ESPN’s Benjamin Solak thinks that the rookie from Penn State <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45988085/2025-nfl-training-camp-lessons-updates-10-team-visits-fantasy-football-buzz" rel="noopener">could follow the trajectory</a> that Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers had during a historic rookie campaign.</p><p>“There is no hiding the excitement in Indianapolis for having a legitimate talent at tight end for the first time in years,” wrote Solak on Monday. “I’m not sure Warren will get enough routes to actually lead the team in targets, as he’ll be used plenty as a blocker even on passing downs. But there is a large chapter of the Colts’ playbook that has opened up exclusively because Warren is in the building. He’s going to get his — third down, red zone, two-minute drives. And if he produces early, expect the portion of the pie that is schemed up for him to grow and grow.”</p><p>If Warren can even come somewhat close <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/brock-bowers-fantasy-football-outlook-2025-nfl-season">to Bowers’ ridiculous 2024 campaign,</a> then Indianapolis will be very happy. The Colts have been searching for a long-term answer at the position since the days of Dallas Clark. In Warren, they could have that answer. The biggest issue is the former Florida Gators signal caller’s health. He hasn’t been able to stay on the field to continue his development. This might be one reason why Jones could end up the starting quarterback before long.</p><p>Whether it’s Richardson Sr. or Jones under center, if <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-tyler-warren-draws-antonio-gates-comparison-shane-steichen">Warren stays on the field,</a> then the rookie should continue to improve. He has plenty of skills that turned him into a first round selection. Now, the key is turning those skills into actual production, like Bowers before him. Warren comes into the league with a ton of hype, and he should immediately see a large share of targets from whoever the Colts play at quarterback.</p><p>Warren made his preseason debut on Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens and had three catches for 40 yards.</p><p>Colts head coach Shane Steichen has spent time working with plenty of star tight ends throughout his career, including Antonio Gates, while both were with the San Diego Chargers. Gates was just inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Steichen even revealed during an episode of the “Up &amp; Adams Show” that Warren <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=420&amp;v=GmRc24gDI-Y&amp;feature=youtu.be" rel="noopener">has similar traits</a> to Gates.</p><p>“I think he’s got a natural feel for the game. I think he has an awareness for zones and voids in the defense as he’s running routes. But the one thing that’s really impressive about him, he’s got unbelievable hands, and when he’s out in the open space, he is so physical at the point of attack. Like he’s going to lower his shoulder and go after you. I love that about him,” Steichen said when asked about something Warren has that Gates also had,” Steichen said.</p><p>Steichen’s run with the Chargers began in 2011 when he was a defensive assistant, and he then returned as the Offensive quality control coach from 2014 to 2015 before being the quarterbacks coach for the final years of Gates’ career before he retired after the 2018 season.</p><p>Before the NFL Draft, analyst and former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2025/story/_/id/44531515/2025-nfl-draft-comps-best-prospect-pro-matches-comparisons" rel="noopener">also compared</a> Warren to Gates and Jason Witten.</p><p>“Am I allowed to comp a prospect to two players? I’m bending the rules because Warren is a mix of Witten and Gates. It’s high praise, but Warren is an unbelievably reliable tight end, catching 104 passes for 1,233 yards and eight touchdowns at Penn State last season. He also threw a TD pass and rushed for four more scores. Warren shows creativity and variety in his routes, which is rare for a player of his 6-6 size. That’s why I see a mix of Witten and Gates here.”</p><p>If that is anywhere close to being true, Warren is in store for a very long and successful career, and the Colts should be excited for the rookie tight end.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
