Outside of ClutchPoints, Meyers does play-by-play broadcasting for various colleges in the northeast.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The New England Patriots placed wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on the <a href="https://twitter.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1696976460576182377" rel="noopener">injured reserve,</a> ruling him out for at least the first four games of the season, according to Jeremy Fowler.</p><p>Thornton played well in limited action in the preseason before suffering a shoulder injury. He started last season on the injured reserve due to a shoulder injury as well after he suffered a broken clavicle during the preseason.</p><p>The Patriots selected Thornton in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2022. He played in 13 games as a rookie, starting nine of them. He caught 22 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns, scoring another one on the ground.</p><p>Thornton was one of six wide receivers to make <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-bailey-zappe-malik-cunningham-big-decisions-new-england-future-shocking-releases" rel="noopener">New England’s initial 53-man roster.</a> Led by Juju Smith-Schuster and DeVante Parker, the Patriots hope to improve their passing offense and scoring, which ranked 20th and 17th respectively last season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/1-player-patriots-claim-waiver-wire-roster-cuts" rel="noopener">The Patriots have had a hard time</a> developing young wide receivers in recent years for a multitude of reasons. It’s unfortunate that the reason Thornton hasn’t been able to bloom into a true weapon is because of injury.</p><p>Starting each of your first two NFL seasons on injured reserve is something no player wants to go through. Knowing the Patriot Way though, it will only add fuel to the fire for Tyquan Thornton.</p><p>The earliest he can return to the field is Week 5 when the Patriots host the New Orleans Saints. I’m sure he’s excited about being used and getting opportunities to be used to his skillset.”</p><p>Last season, head coach Bill Belichick made the questionable decision to put two defensive-oriented football minds in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge in charge of New England’s offense. Tyquan Thornton made two pretty big plays on New England’s opening drive.</p><p>The first was a 24-yard grab he made while toe-tapping along the sideline to secure the catch. Seven plays later, Thornton got a good play design to get open right next to the pylon and score a rare first-quarter touchdown for the Patriots that put them up 7-0.</p><p>Thornton only had one other catch for the, which went for 29 yards, finishing the game off with three receptions for 60 yards with the touchdown. Thornton felt like he had to make up for that.</p><p>“It means a lot,” Thornton said. “Just to step up. I feel like I owed them for last week. So just to do that for my quarterback, the rest of the offense and the rest of this organization. It means a lot to me.”</p><p>Thornton said that he didn’t dwell on his drop last week and added that he felt he had to step up because of the “whole scenario.”</p><p>Thornton seems to have the trust though of the two most important people: Jones and Bill Belichick. The quarterback gave the rookie glowing praise following the game, touting Thornton’s ability and stated how much he’s looking forward to playing with him for years to come.</p><p>“I think he’s a really good route runner, really good, fast, smart kid,” the Patriots QB said. “Works hard. Doesn’t complain about anything. Just goes out there and does what he’s supposed to do. We have a lot of guys like that on our team. Just excited to grow with him. He’s a young player. I’m a young player.”</p><p>Jones also said that the two are “working every day to get that chemistry.”</p><p>“He’s done a great job. Definitely, we’re going to watch the film together,” Mac Jones said. “I always like to tell him things to work on, same thing with him. He’s very comfortable about telling me, ‘Hey, put it here, put it there, let’s try this, try that.’ As a young player, definitely impressed with him. His ability to communicate at a really high level during the games by telling me what he sees, too. Love our receivers and all those guys. They fight hard for each other, fight hard for the team. That’s what it’s all about.”</p><p>Jones certainly seemed to look at Thornton’s way more than usual on Sunday. He came back early in the year but he missed so much time early, it took him a little while to catch up on some things,” the Patriots head coach said. “He’s an explosive player that can attack the vertical part of the defense. Fast with run-after-catch opportunities, things like that. But like any rookie, there’s always room for improvement. There’s things he needs to work on and can do better. But he certainly helps us. He’s a big target. Obviously the quarterbacks, Mac likes to throw to him. Big, fast guy. Quarterback-friendly.</p><p>“But, yeah, he’s made some big plays for us. He opens up some other things because of his ability to stretch the field vertically. Most importantly, Thornton scored his first two NFL touchdowns (a receiving and a rushing touchdown) to help the Patriots beat the Browns, 38-15.</p><p>Thornton’s breakout performance came during what’s apparently been a tough time for the young receiver. Patriots veteran tight end Jonnu Smith shared how proud he was of the rookie.</p><p>“Tyquan Thornton, that’s my guy, man. That’s my young guy,” Smith said  following the win. “We’ve got a good relationship. He’s been battling some personal things. I don’t want to get too much into it, but me myself, I’ve experienced the exact same thing that he’s going through right now. For him to come out and put on a performance like he did today, it just speaks volumes about that kid. I know when I was going through it it was tough.</p><p>“To see him have a smile on his face. To see him go out there and make plays and play free, that speaks volumes, man. Guys like that, those are the kind of guys we want around us. Guys that fight through adversity. His first touchdown came on a 3rd-and-goal play at the 2-yard line, creating quick separation in the middle of the end zone to get the touchdown grab after the Patriots struggled to score in a similar spot earlier in the game.</p><p>Tyquan Thornton’s first touchdown ended up being the game-deciding score as it put the Patriots up 17-6 at the beginning of the second half. But that wasn’t enough for him. One play following a muffed punt by the Browns, Thornton scored his second touchdown of the game on a jet sweep, moving in motion before the snap and got the handoff right after the ball was hiked by Bailey Zappe. Thornton had surgery on the collarbone shortly after the injury. It was reported that he would miss six-to-eight weeks. Monday is the six-week mark since he had surgery.</p><p>The second-round rookie draft pick was placed on injured reserve shortly after the roster was cut down to 53 players in late August. That ruled him out for the first four weeks of the season. Thornton is eligible to return to the practice field on Wednesday, though. He shared that the rookie has handled himself well though since he’s been off the field.</p><p>“One thing about Tyquan, ever since he got hurt against Carolina, and he had the collarbone injury, he’s been locked in and dedicated to his rehab process,” Douglas said Tuesday. “He hasn’t been able to do a lot of things physically, but he’s been on top of the mental part of the game.”</p><p>Douglas also shared that Thornton’s been watching film of other top receivers around the league with Patriots coaches, seeing what he can learn from them and apply it to his game.</p><p>Douglas believes that Thornton’s in a good spot to learn, too, as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-devante-parker-credits-mac-jones-after-having-breakout-performance-vs-ravens/" rel="noopener">he’s in a receiver room</a> with Jakobi Meyers, DeVante Parker, Nelson Agholor, and Kendrick Bourne.</p><p>“Tyquan, he really came into a good situation, because we have so many guys in that room who have played a lot of football and have a lot of years in the league,” Douglas said. “They’ve been successful, they’ve produced a whole lot … so he’s truly fortunate to be developed behind those guys and really and truly learn from them.
