Outside of ClutchPoints, Meyers does play-by-play broadcasting for various colleges in the northeast.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The New England Patriots placed wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on the <a href="https://twitter.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1696976460576182377" rel="noopener">injured reserve,</a> ruling him out for at least the first four games of the season, according to Jeremy Fowler.</p><p>Thornton played well in limited action in the preseason before suffering a shoulder injury. He started last season on the injured reserve due to a shoulder injury as well after he suffered a broken clavicle during the preseason.</p><p>The Patriots selected Thornton in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2022. He played in 13 games as a rookie, starting nine of them. He caught 22 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns, scoring another one on the ground.</p><p>Thornton was one of six wide receivers to make <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-bailey-zappe-malik-cunningham-big-decisions-new-england-future-shocking-releases" rel="noopener">New England’s initial 53-man roster.</a> Led by Juju Smith-Schuster and DeVante Parker, the Patriots hope to improve their passing offense and scoring, which ranked 20th and 17th respectively last season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/1-player-patriots-claim-waiver-wire-roster-cuts" rel="noopener">The Patriots have had a hard time</a> developing young wide receivers in recent years for a multitude of reasons. It’s unfortunate that the reason Thornton hasn’t been able to bloom into a true weapon is because of injury.</p><p>Starting each of your first two NFL seasons on injured reserve is something no player wants to go through. Knowing the Patriot Way though, it will only add fuel to the fire for Tyquan Thornton.</p><p>The earliest he can return to the field is Week 5 when the Patriots host the New Orleans Saints. I’m sure he’s excited about being used and getting opportunities to be used to his skillset.”</p><p>Last season, head coach Bill Belichick made the questionable decision to put two defensive-oriented football minds in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge in charge of New England’s offense. Tyquan Thornton made two pretty big plays on New England’s opening drive.</p><p>The first was a 24-yard grab he made while toe-tapping along the sideline to secure the catch. Seven plays later, Thornton got a good play design to get open right next to the pylon and score a rare first-quarter touchdown for the Patriots that put them up 7-0.</p><p>Thornton only had one other catch for the, which went for 29 yards, finishing the game off with three receptions for 60 yards with the touchdown. Thornton felt like he had to make up for that.</p><p>“It means a lot,” Thornton said. “Just to step up. I feel like I owed them for last week. So just to do that for my quarterback, the rest of the offense and the rest of this organization. It means a lot to me.”</p><p>Thornton said that he didn’t dwell on his drop last week and added that he felt he had to step up because of the “whole scenario.”</p><p>Thornton seems to have the trust though of the two most important people: Jones and Bill Belichick. The quarterback gave the rookie glowing praise following the game, touting Thornton’s ability and stated how much he’s looking forward to playing with him for years to come.</p><p>“I think he’s a really good route runner, really good, fast, smart kid,” the Patriots QB said. “Works hard. Doesn’t complain about anything. Just goes out there and does what he’s supposed to do. We have a lot of guys like that on our team. Just excited to grow with him. He’s a young player. I’m a young player.”</p><p>Jones also said that the two are “working every day to get that chemistry.”</p><p>“He’s done a great job. Definitely, we’re going to watch the film together,” Mac Jones said. “I always like to tell him things to work on, same thing with him. He’s very comfortable about telling me, ‘Hey, put it here, put it there, let’s try this, try that.’ As a young player, definitely impressed with him. His ability to communicate at a really high level during the games by telling me what he sees, too. Love our receivers and all those guys. They fight hard for each other, fight hard for the team. That’s what it’s all about.”</p><p>Jones certainly seemed to look at Thornton’s way more than usual on Sunday. He came back early in the year but he missed so much time early, it took him a little while to catch up on some things,” the Patriots head coach said. “He’s an explosive player that can attack the vertical part of the defense. Fast with run-after-catch opportunities, things like that. But like any rookie, there’s always room for improvement. There’s things he needs to work on and can do better. But he certainly helps us. He’s a big target. Obviously the quarterbacks, Mac likes to throw to him. Big, fast guy. Quarterback-friendly.</p><p>“But, yeah, he’s made some big plays for us. He opens up some other things because of his ability to stretch the field vertically. Most importantly, Thornton scored his first two NFL touchdowns (a receiving and a rushing touchdown) to help the Patriots beat the Browns, 38-15.</p><p>Thornton’s breakout performance came during what’s apparently been a tough time for the young receiver. Patriots veteran tight end Jonnu Smith shared how proud he was of the rookie.</p><p>“Tyquan Thornton, that’s my guy, man. That’s my young guy,” Smith said  following the win. “We’ve got a good relationship. He’s been battling some personal things. I don’t want to get too much into it, but me myself, I’ve experienced the exact same thing that he’s going through right now. For him to come out and put on a performance like he did today, it just speaks volumes about that kid. I know when I was going through it it was tough.</p><p>“To see him have a smile on his face. To see him go out there and make plays and play free, that speaks volumes, man. Guys like that, those are the kind of guys we want around us. Guys that fight through adversity. His first touchdown came on a 3rd-and-goal play at the 2-yard line, creating quick separation in the middle of the end zone to get the touchdown grab after the Patriots struggled to score in a similar spot earlier in the game.</p><p>Tyquan Thornton’s first touchdown ended up being the game-deciding score as it put the Patriots up 17-6 at the beginning of the second half. But that wasn’t enough for him. One play following a muffed punt by the Browns, Thornton scored his second touchdown of the game on a jet sweep, moving in motion before the snap and got the handoff right after the ball was hiked by Bailey Zappe. He shared that the rookie has handled himself well though since he’s been off the field.</p><p>“One thing about Tyquan, ever since he got hurt against Carolina, and he had the collarbone injury, he’s been locked in and dedicated to his rehab process,” Douglas said Tuesday. “He hasn’t been able to do a lot of things physically, but he’s been on top of the mental part of the game.”</p><p>Douglas also shared that Thornton’s been watching film of other top receivers around the league with Patriots coaches, seeing what he can learn from them and apply it to his game.</p><p>Douglas believes that Thornton’s in a good spot to learn, too, as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-devante-parker-credits-mac-jones-after-having-breakout-performance-vs-ravens/" rel="noopener">he’s in a receiver room</a> with Jakobi Meyers, DeVante Parker, Nelson Agholor, and Kendrick Bourne.</p><p>“Tyquan, he really came into a good situation, because we have so many guys in that room who have played a lot of football and have a lot of years in the league,” Douglas said. “They’ve been successful, they’ve produced a whole lot … so he’s truly fortunate to be developed behind those guys and really and truly learn from them. Given the competitive state of the AFC, though, that’s going to be easier said than done.</p><p>One of the main goals this offseason for the Patriots was to upgrade the weapons Jones had at his disposal. Among the new names brought in was Tyquan Thornton, who was New England’s <a href="https://www.patriots.com/video/patriots-select-tyquan-thornton-with-no-50-pick-in-2022-draft#:~:text=New%20England%20Patriots%20defensive%20tackle,with%20the%20Kansas%20City%20Chiefs%5D.">second round pick</a> in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Baylor.</p><p>Thornton had been having a promising camp, showcasing his speed and ability to rip off big plays at any given moment. Thornton’s promising preseason was brought to a screeching halt last week when he was forced to leave the Pats second preseason game against the Carolina Panthers with a collarbone injury.</p><p>Thornton was later diagnosed with a fractured clavicle, and was forced to undergo surgery right before the start of the season. This was obviously a big blow, as Thornton looked capable of being a big piece of the offense right from the get go. Here are seven observations from Monday’s practice.</p><h2>New England Patriots Practice Observations</h2><p><b>It was a lighter practice</b></p><p>New England hasn’t done any tackling in practice so far in training camp. Not only did Monday continue that, the Patriots ran more of a walkthrough practice.</p><p>The majority of Monday’s practice was 11-on-11 sessions with some intensity involved, but was mostly run at half-speed. There was a focus on playing through certain types of situations for both sides with a couple of breaks for special teams work in between.</p><p>Monday should be the last lighter practice for the Patriots for a bit. Joint practices are typically more intense, and now is probably the best point to ramp things up with the regular season getting closer.</p><p><b>Tyquan Thornton featured throughout much of the day</b></p><p>After grabbing a touchdown in his first preseason game, Thornton got a lot of shine in Monday’s practice.</p><p>The second-round rookie got work with both the first and second offensive units on Monday. Thornton had a handful of targets, making a few catches. He noticeably had a play designed for him, with the Patriots running a pick-play and Mac Jones throwing to him near the goal line.</p><p>Thornton also ran a fair amount of deep routes, but those plays didn’t have much success. Thornton was able to create a little separation down the field following a play-action. However, Bailey Zappe’s pass was errant and didn’t reach Thornton. During the hurry-up drill at the end of practice, Thornton got open along the sideline against corner Shaun Wade. Brian Hoyer’s pass led Thornton just a couple yards too far, though, as the rookie ended up catching the ball out of bounds.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Touchdown, Tyquan Thornton! He made an over-the-shoulder grab over fellow rookie Jack Jones for a touchdown and celebrated with a hard spike.</p><p><b>Change on the ground?</b></p><p>The Patriots didn’t run the ball much on Monday, rushing the ball just 20 times of the several dozen plays ran. Of those 20 design rushes, only two were outside runs — with one of them being a jet sweep for tight end Jonnu Smith.</p><p>Through the first two-plus weeks of camp, the Patriots struggled a lot while trying outside rushes. They also struggled on the ground against the Giants, rushing for only 52 yards on 18 carries (2.9 per carry).</p><p>While there was no tackling on Monday, the Patriots saw some success in rushing up the middle. Damien Harris had a good cut on one of his few rushes and Rhamondre Stevenson was quick through the hole, too. Ty Montgomery, J.J. Taylor, Pierre Strong, and Kevin Harris also had carries, but didn’t have much success.</p><p><b>How Mac Jones played</b></p><p>As he has through much of camp, Mac Jones played it safe on his throws on Monday. He threw a few more intermediate passes than usual, but didn’t really take any shots down the field.</p><p>Jones completed 16-of-18 passes in the first few 11-on-11 sessions on Monday. He ran a little play-action, but many of those passes ended up in short completions to running backs (Harris) or tight ends (Smith). He hit Hunter Henry on a tight seam pass over the middle. He also completed a quick strike to DeVate Parker on a slant, which corner Myles Bryant nearly jumped in front of.</p><p>In the hurry-up 11-on-11 session, Jones had some trouble. He went 5-for-10, missing a receiver on a deep pass on one throw, throwing the ball away on another, and a miscommunication with Nelson Agholor caused a third incompletion. Jakobi Meyers had two of those grabs, while Smith and Hunter Henry had the others.</p><p><b>Bill Belichick upset</b></p><p>The Patriots’ top man dropped a few curse words throughout Monday’s practice, but not directed at the players. Belichick got angry with the chain gang a couple of times, causing him to raise his voice a bit at them. The Patriots were practicing certain situations throughout Monday’s practice, and the chain gain not being on the same page as him was the likely root of the frustration.</p><p><b>Two Patriots in their second season in New England have a busy day, while another is mostly quiet</b></p><p>Agholor and Smith were two of the top targets on Monday.</p><p>Agholor had five receptions on six targets during the day. He had a nice catch on a comeback route in which he had to stretch out a bit in order to make the grab. In addition to his one-handed touchdown grab, he made another in which he was able to get past corner Jonathan Jones in the back of the end zone.</p><p>Smith caught several passes in the flat on Monday. He was also a common target for Jones on play-action passes, catching a few bubble screens before running up field. It’s clear the Patriots want to find a way to get Smith the ball so he can make plays in the open field, something he has been strong at for much of his career.</p><p>Kendrick Bourne had another quiet practice on Monday. The veteran only had one target: a pass from Jones over the middle that top corner Jalen Mills defended well to force an incompletion.</p><p><b>Taking note of who was and wasn’t at practice</b></p><p>Safety Jabrill Peppers was a full participant at Monday’s practice after being limited during last week’s practices. He got run with both the first and second unit defenses.</p><p>Starting right tackle Isaiah Wynn missed his third straight practice on Monday. Corners Joejuan Williams and Malcolm Butler were also absent. Williams made a trip to the blue injury tent during Thursday’s preseason opener. He also struggled in that game, allowing a few big catches throughout the game. He created separation on a nice move against Giants cornerback Aaron Robinson. Backup quarterback Brian Hoyer’s pass was well underthrown to Thornton, negating the nice move.</p><p>Hoyer made up for it though at the end of the first quarter. He found Thornton in the back of the end zone for a two-yard touchdown pass. Thornton actually had to fight through a holding penalty to get up and make the grab.</p><p>Thornton downplayed his first (unofficial) touchdown in the NFL. “It was just basic fundamentals you know, it was something that we worked on throughout the week, putting emphasis on the red zone and it just goes to show that hard work definitely pays off,” he said.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Touchdown, Tyquan Thornton! Fourth-round rookie Bailey Zappe quarterbacked for the Patriots for the remainder of the game and completed a seven-yard pass to Thornton, the receiver’s other reception on the night. The completion to Thornton was just one of three completions on nine attempts from Zappe in the first half.</p><p>Zappe though got better as the game went along. The Western Kentucky product completed 12 of his first 13 passes in the second half, leading the Patriots to multiple scoring drives. Zappe admitted that he just got “more and more comfortable” as the game went along.</p><p>“The more times I come to the sideline, talk to my coaches, talk to my teammates about what they saw, what they’re seeing, and just going back on a drive and just having that next-play mentality,” Zappe said. “That’s kind of what my coaches, my teammates, we all try to communicate to everybody is have that next-play mentality and moving on from what happened prior and moving on to the next one and trying to do our best, do our job.”</p><p>Zappe’s best moment of the game came on his final drive. The rookie completed 4-of-6 passes, finding backup receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey for a 20-yard touchdown pass that gave the Patriots a 21-20 lead with 4:51 remaining. He played in the Patriots’ first two drives of the night before getting the rest of the night off. After what’s been a relatively shaky first two weeks of training camp for him, Strange thought Thursday’s game was a moment of progression for him.</p><p>“I guess in every way possible,” Strange said about how he’s grown over the last couple of weeks. “In college, my coaches had pointed out to me there were times when I hesitated off of the ball, but I think that was because I was thinking too much. Every now and then you could see me doing that and that’s something I have worked on, and my technique has gotten better just because we have been hammering the fundamentals so I feel I have improved on that too.”</p><p>As for other rookies, Patriots third-round corner Marcus Jones didn’t play on Thursday. That’s likely a good sign for him as many of the starters didn’t play, suggesting that Jones is in line to be the slotting nickel corner with their other slot corner, Jonathan Jones, possibly moving to the outside.</p><p>Fourth-round rookie corner Jack Jones saw a good amount of playing time. He <a href="https://twitter.com/HamAnalysis/status/1557908909666361347?s=20&amp;t=xGZS0L3MjErY35SSVdvzBg">could’ve had an interception</a> that likely would’ve resulted in a touchdown in the third quarter if he was able to get his body in front of the ball a split-second quicker. Got out there and got the jitters out on the first couple of plays. As Thornton put it, “his history speaks for itself.” Nowworking as the Patriots’ wide receivers coach, Brown’s teaching his playing style to Thornton and the rest of New England’s receiving room, which the rookie has an appreciation for.</p><p>“It’s motivation, getting coached up by him,” Thornton said.”You can go on YouTube and see the film. He used to put fear in guys’ heart out there. He reminds us. Us as receivers, we have that mindset going out on the field every day.”</p><p>Brown didn’t just make a name through for just playing receiver. He returned punts and played cornerback when the Patriots were slim in the secondary. Sometimes you’ll be in the slot. Sometimes you’ll be out wide.”</p><p>No matter where you put the 4.28 40-yard dash runner, opposing defenses seem to know Thornton can be a threat no matter where you put him.</p><p>“He’s still fast. The pads didn’t slow him down,” Patriots corner Jalen Mills said of Thornton through the first few padded practices. “Of course, we all know he’s fast. I think the biggest thing for me seeing from is that as a rookie, he’s not just running go routes on every single play. You see him working his short to intermediate routes as well.
