It’s good to just be out there and get some passes with him.”</i></p><p>Matthew Stafford was not able to play the Rams’ final seven games in the 2022 NFL regular season due to concussion symptoms and spinal cord contusion, but is seemingly healthy enough to continue being Los Angeles’ starter come Week 1 of the 2023 campaign.</p><p>In <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rams-news-matthew-staffords-strong-super-bowl-message-for-la-in-2023-per-wife-kelly" rel="noopener">nine appearances in 2022</a>, Matthew Stafford threw for 2,087 yards and 10 touchdowns against eight interceptions on a 68 percent completion rate.</p><p>Apart from Matthew Stafford, the Rams also have rookie Stetson Bennett, veteran backup Brett Rypien, and Dresser Winn below him on the team’s quarterback depth chart. After joining the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rams-news-sean-mcvays-perfect-tom-brady-reaction-to-baker-mayfield-blowing-minds-in-la-debut" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Rams</a> a little over 48 hours ago, Mayfield improbably led the team to a comeback victory down 16-3 on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rams-news-video-evidence-baker-mayfield-is-an-actual-ram-after-unreal-game-winning-drive-vs-raiders" rel="noopener">Thursday Night Football</a> against the Las Vegas Raiders.</p><p>Afterwards, Mayfield was in such a good mood that he told the media an amusing <a href="https://twitter.com/vanjefferson12/status/1601103202484899840?s=12&amp;t=ZM1QLIYbLmrLbb_570xrFQ" rel="noopener">story about teammate Van Jefferson</a>, who hauled in the game-winning score. Here’s Mayfield’s story, per CBS Sports.</p><p>“I was trying to get him to come to Oklahoma, he wouldn’t text or call back… he owes me one.”</p><p>Baker Mayfield said that he was “trying to get him to come to Oklahoma.” Jefferson, a former 4-star recruit, was apparently wooed by Mayfield, whose alma mater is Oklahoma.</p><p>But the Rams quarterback hilariously said that Jefferson never returned his calls or text messages, leading him to say that the wideout “owes him one.”</p><p>Jefferson himself confirmed the story on Twitter, saying “true story.”</p><p>Well, all is likely forgiven now, as Baker Mayfield looked Jefferson’s way with the game on the line- and the two had barely had any time to forge any kind of chemistry on the field.</p><p>Clearly, they didn’t need such time, given their Thursday Night Football performances vs. the Raiders.</p><p>And off-field chemistry won’t take much time either, judging by this amusing story.</p><p>The Rams were sparked by Baker Mayfield’s stunning performance on Thursday. A lot of it is predicated on are you able to have some continuity with some of your drives and getting multiple plays off, but the goal is he’s been full speed.</p><p>“He’s done a great job this week, but we’ve been able to develop some depth in that (wide receivers) room that I think will be helpful to be able to still keep some of those other guys involved, but we’re anticipating a normal workload for Van, [how] you’ve seen him in previous years.”</p><p>That’s a good sign for Rams fans. Outside of Cooper Kupp, the WR room has been extremely poor. With the return of Jefferson, he should line up alongside Kupp and Allen Robinson.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rams-news-van-jefferson-injury-update-is-bad-news-for-los-angeles-matthew-stafford/" rel="noopener">Jefferson missed the first six contests of the campaign due to a small knee procedure</a> in training camp. He had 50 catches for 802 yards and six scores in 2021 and QB Matthew Stafford is extremely excited to get the wideout back:</p><p>“He’s a really special player,” Stafford said. “I got to experience some of that last year with his ability to really be a complete receiver. He had some big plays on tape. There’s no question he was running by some people, but he’s a guy in my mind that can do it all. It’s great to have guys like that.”</p><p>Hopefully, this is the spark the Rams offense needs, who currently rank 25th in total yards and 29th in points with just 17.3 per game. The Buffalo Bills walked all over the defending champs. Now, the Rams will be taking on the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2. Unfortunately for LA, the injury concerns to wide receiver Van Jefferson remain.</p><p>Jefferson underwent knee surgery and missed Week 1 as he recovers. The latest update on the 26-year-old wideout, according to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, is bittersweet. He has <a href="https://twitter.com/LATimesklein/status/1570851102463262720?s=20&amp;t=LSYkt0FXv189hUj6weOblA">not yet participated in team drills since his surgery</a>, so it could still be a while before he gets back to playing. His 802 receiving yards last year were the second-most on the team.</p><p>The Rams must get Allen Robinson more involved in the passing game. After getting targeted just once in the season opener, Robinson said that sometimes, that’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rams-news-allen-robinson-speaks-out-on-lack-of-targets-from-matthew-stafford-in-week-1-loss-vs-bills/">just how it shakes out</a>. Against a weaker defense, he should be able to help Los Angeles much more frequently on offense. Cooper Kupp will certainly have another big day to carry the offense.</p><p>Even without Van Jefferson, the Rams <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/los-angeles-rams-4-bold-predictions-for-week-2-vs-falcons/">should collect their first win of the season</a> against the Falcons. The injuries to Matthew Stafford and one of his key targets, Van Jefferson, will make it a tougher matchup for the defending champions.</p><p>After already ruling Jefferson <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rams-news-la-makes-final-decision-on-van-jeffersons-status-for-week-1/">out of the season opener</a> as he continues recovering from knee surgery, the Rams may have to be ready to sideline him even longer. According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, Jefferson could miss more than just the first game of the season. His speed made him a key part of Los Angeles’ offense, as he ranked <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2021/receiving.htm#receiving::11">sixth in the NFL last season</a> in yards per reception.</p><p>Jefferson’s absence is already bad news for the Rams, who need him as a vertical threat to help Stafford, Cooper Kupp and new receiver Allen Robinson. Stafford says he is fully good to go following an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rams-news-matthew-stafford-and-childhood-pal-clayton-kershaw-shared-eerily-similar-offseason/">injury to his throwing elbow</a>.
