We have to put guys in better positions and that’s on me. You have to be able to throw the ball in the NFL to win. We lean into our strength, which is running the football. When the game is tight, you have to make the throws to win.”</p><p>Callahan did not mention Will Levis by name, but it’s obvious that the quarterback is not getting the job done. In the loss to the Colts, Levis completed 16 of 27 passes for a paltry 95 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.</p><p>Levis has struggled since the opening week. He has turned the ball over multiple times this season, often making reckless plays that have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/titans-news-brian-callahan-sticking-with-will-levis-week-6">placed the Titans</a> in a difficult position that they have not been able to overcome. The loss to the Colts left the Titans with a 1-4 record  and in third place in the AFC South. They are one-half game ahead of the last-place Jacksonville Jaguars.</p><h2><b>Titans passing game is clearly struggling</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Will-Levis-is-not-effective-with-his-passing.jpg"><figcaption>Andrew Nelles / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Titans have been in a position to win in three of their four losses. However, the inability to throw the ball effectively has cost them in each of those games.</p><p>Tennessee ranks 30th in yards per game and <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/stats/team/_/table/passing/sort/netPassingYardsPerGame/dir/desc">29th in passing yards</a> per outing. They are averaging just 145.0 yards through the air.</p><p>While Tennessee is having problems making game-winning plays, the Colts clearly got a lift from Joe Flacco and his passing attack. The veteran quarterback completed 22 of 38 passes for 189 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. It was not a huge game, but he was clearly much more productive throwing the football than Levis.</p><p>While the Titans struggled to throw the ball, Tony Pollard gave Tennessee a productive ground attack. The former Cowboys had 17 carries for 93 yards and 1 touchdown.</p><p>Callahan has had issues with the way Levis has played throughout the season. He has continued to stick with him as the team’s starter, but it would not be a shock if he decided to go with Mason Rudolph as his QB1 in Week 7 when the Titans face the Bills in Buffalo.</p><p> </p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He would miss most of Week 4 with an injury and the Titans did not play in Week 5.</p><p>Fans went in on the 25-year-old Kentucky alum, calling him the “funniest” player in the NFL and continuing the ongoing joke that he provides at least one meme-worthy moment per game. Fans were equally semi-critical of Levis after he ran into a ball boy on the sideline in the first quarter.</p><p>The attack on Levis on social media began in the Titans’ Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears when the quarterback’s horrid decision to flip the ball out of a sack led to an interception returned for a touchdown. The public criticism of his play has forced head coach Brian Callahan to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/titans-news-brian-callahan-sticking-with-will-levis-week-6">address the situation and voice his support</a> of the second-year signal caller.</p><p>Through four games, Levis has just four touchdowns to six interceptions. He has thrown an interception in every game he has appeared in, including the team’s Week 4 win over the Miami Dolphins in which he threw just four passes before being ruled out with a shoulder injury.</p><p>In Levis’ Week 4 absence, backup Mason Rudolph guided the team to a 31-12 victory to give them their first win of the season. Yet, the team and fan base shouldn’t be so quick to turn on Levis and write him off as a lost cause.</p><h2><b>Will Levis has an exceptional arm</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Titans-QB-Will-Levis-vs.-Dolphins.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Will Levis might already have one of the strongest arms in the entire league. In this department, he may only be rivaled by true superstars such as Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.</p><p>Arm strength is something that can’t be taught, because a quarterback either has it or he does not. Levis absolutely has plus arm strength and that gives him a ceiling that most quarterbacks do not have.</p><h2><b>His biggest weaknesses are fixable</b></h2><p>Will Levis’ biggest weaknesses at this point in his career are entirely fixable. The things he struggles with the most are processing and knowing what to do based on the play call and the look that the defense is presenting.</p><p>Levis can sometimes find himself tricked by exotic or disguised coverages, and he doesn’t always recognize pressure early on nor does he react accordingly. He can do a better job of understanding where pressure is coming from and maneuvering in the pocket to give his blockers the best chance of success. He needs to work on identifying coverages and not walking directly into various traps that defenses set for him.</p><p>Levis also needs to do a better job of knowing when to take the gamble on a potential big play and when to just settle for the safe and easy completion. It’s never a good idea to do too much of one or the other. Too many quarterbacks play too cautiously all the time and never make a big play when they have a chance.</p><p>However, too many other quarterbacks always hunt for the big play and end up <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/titans-news-brian-callahan-rips-will-levis-for-turnover-vs-jets">turning the ball over too often</a> to be effective for their team. Anybody can have Brett Favre’s gunslinger mentality, but not everybody can have Favre’s talent to back it up and pull it off effectively.</p><p>Levis certainly has the talent, but he just needs to learn when to take chances and when to play it safe. If he can strike this balance, he can become a much more effective player and a big weapon for his team.</p><p>The good news for the Titans and their fans is that nearly all of Levis’ problems are fixable. Some can be fixed with time and experience, while it might take a change in the coaching staff to fix some of his other issues. However, it took the Bills several years of trying different things out with Josh Allen before the star quarterback was finally able to put it all together. When he did, though, the results were majestic.</p><p>The Titans will hope that Levis can follow a similar path. Even if it takes another year to get him to really figure things out and put it all together, they’ll live with it if the result is anything like what Josh Allen has turned into up north.</p><h2><b>Levis is willing to put his body on the line and run the ball</b></h2><p>One of the things that the Titans should love about Will Levis is that he’s willing to grit his teeth and run the ball. The Connecticut native is a big, physical quarterback who doesn’t mind getting his jersey dirty and is willing to mix it up with linebackers and defensive linemen.</p><p>Just like Josh Allen in Buffalo, Levis is willing to take a hit and also embraces the opportunity to deliver hits of his own and punish would-be tacklers.</p><p>This skill set gives Levis another avenue to threaten defenses and makes him particularly effective in third or fourth down and short situations. If the Titans can begin to utilize the quarterback sneak to similar effect as the Philadelphia Eagles have with Jalen Hurts, it will effectively give them four downs any time they want. To start with, improving the pass blocking would give him more time to analyze the defense and make the right read.</p><p>Levis often finds himself running for his life almost immediately after the ball is snapped, and that is almost never a good thing for a quarterback’s decision-making. If Levis has more time in the pocket, that could help him to make better reads and better plays.</p><p>Similarly, adding another capable pass-catching threat or two would improve the team’s depth and give Levis more options in terms of throwing the ball. The Titans could also stand to improve their running game. That would take something off Levis’ plate and give him one less thing to worry about.</p><p>Many of the best current quarterbacks in the NFL started their careers as game managers, and that often paid dividends farther down the road. He is “improving” and he’s better than he was after the game.”</p><p>This is a huge boost for the Titans, coming off their first win of the season. They have a favorable opportunity ahead against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6, so they want to make sure they have the right player under center.</p><h2><b>Brian Callahan and the Titans have options to consider</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Brian-Callahan-and-Will-Levis_54c3ad.jpg"><figcaption>Andrew Nelles / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>When Levis left in the second quarter against the Dolphins on September 30, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/titans-news-mason-rudolph-makes-blunt-admission-after-replacing-will-levis">veteran backup Mason Rudolph responded</a> with nine completions for 85 yards to seal a 31-12 win for Tennessee. He just might have saved the day for Callahan’s squad, as Levis started things off by throwing an interception on the offensive’s first drive, and had three completions for 25 yards prior to leaving the game.</p><p>The Titans medical staff will continue to monitor Levis’ ailment as the practice week moves along, but because of the similarities between him and Rudolph, there won’t need to be many tweaks to the playbook. That said, no matter who the Titans wind up rolling with, it appears that Callahan’s best course of action is to keep leaning on the run game and their defense.</p><p>Tennessee’s solid running back tandem in Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears proves to be a reliable, and winning component to the offense. They combined for 127 yards on 37 carries and two touchdowns in Week 5.</p><p>More updates on Levis’ injury, and who will be starting quarterback should arise later in the practice week.
