Andrew Thomas practiced in a limited capacity on back-to-back days this week but was officially listed as “doubtful” for Sunday’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-vs-cowboys-bold-predictions-week-2-2025-nfl-season">divisional matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.</a></p><p>Thomas continues working his way<a href="https://x.com/MikeGarafolo/status/1966570023482278119" rel="noopener"> back from the foot injury</a> he suffered last October, when a Lisfranc fracture ended his season after just six games. He underwent a procedure to repair the injury and was activated from the physically unable to perform list last week. Head coach Brian Daboll noted that both the trainers and Thomas have been “hitting checkpoints” in his recovery, though the timeline remains unclear.</p><p>Despite the progress, the Giants may have to rely on other options against Dallas. Veteran tackle James Hudson has filled in at Thomas’ spot throughout the preseason and in Week 1, protecting Russell Wilson’s blind side. The coaching staff also has rookie Marcus Mbow, who has shown versatility at both tackle spots and could see action if needed.</p><p>The Giants’ injury report featured more names beyond Thomas. Defensive lineman Rakeem Nuñez-Roches was added with a foot issue and is also listed as “doubtful” for Sunday. Linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles has already been ruled out with a calf injury after missing the last two practices.</p><p>There was better news for the wide receiver group. Rookie Malik Nabers, who appeared on the report with back soreness. Darius Slayton also avoided a designation despite being limited earlier with a groin issue. When<a href="https://x.com/jonmachota/status/1966251082755223785" rel="noopener"> asked about his track record</a> against New York, the 32-year-old chose to focus on Sunday’s mission.</p><p>“Hope to keep that going, that’s the plan,” Prescott told Jon Machota of The Athletic. “Studying, preparing, doing everything in my power to make sure that I’m prepared to keep that going.”</p><p>Across 15 games against the Giants, Prescott earned a 13-2 record, tossed 29 touchdowns, and recorded 3,915 passing yards. He is also coming off a strong Week 1 performance against the Philadelphia Eagles.</p><p>While the Cowboys lost the season opener, Prescott did<a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46185166/nfl-dallas-cowboys-brian-schottenheimer-ceedee-lamb-dak-prescott" rel="noopener"> what he could</a> to keep them in the contest. He completed 21 of 34 passes for 188 yards.</p><p>“We’ve just got to play a little bit more complementary,” Prescott told ESPN’s Todd Archer. “And what I mean by that is defense gets some stops in the first half, and we score points in the second half. Then we’re going to be proud of the outcome of this game.”</p><p>The Giants were defeated 21-6 by the Washington Commanders in Week 1. Even while playing fewer snaps than usual, the former DPOY made his presence known multiple times against Jordan Love. Against the Washington Commanders, Parsons was finally fully unleashed, and Packers fans saw how disruptive he could be.</p><p>Parsons may have had only half of a sack credited to him, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-micah-parsons-message-snap-count-fear-opponents">anyone watching the Packers-Commanders game could tell his impact on defense.</a> Commanders QB Jayden Daniels was never comfortable in the pocket, as Parsons was always breathing down his neck. If it wasn’t Parsons, it was someone else on the defensive line clawing at him, freed up by the gravity of their star pass rusher.</p><p>New York Giants rookie Abdul Carter <a href="https://x.com/1NCRDB1/status/1966467722964808025" rel="noopener">had an awesome reaction</a> to the Micah Parsons show. Posting to X, the pass rusher said that, “RUSHERS are the new QB, we impact the game &amp; winning just as much!! Micah proved it last night!”</p><p>Daniels was pressured 21 times against the Packers, contributing heavily to the Commanders’ struggles on offense. The Packers’ pass rush got home only a handful of times (four sacks on Daniels), but their presence was enough to bother the young quarterback. It also helped that the Packers’ secondary was able to lock down the Commanders’ passing attack, giving enough time for their pass rushers to win their assignments.</p><p>The Packers had a clear game plan coming into the Commanders game. Considered as one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL, Daniels also struggled to run against Green Bay’s defense. When the pass rush got to him, the Packers were able to swarm the quarterback as soon as he started to take off.</p><p>With<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-jayden-reed-out-6-8-weeks-broken-collerbone"> Jayden Reed missing at least a month and a half due to a broken collarbone</a> and the Packers’ offensive line still injured, the Packers defense needs to step up big time. Gipson’s release came <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-jets/jets-news-new-york-release-xavier-gipson-steelers-game">following a costly fumble on a kickoff return</a> during the Jets’ narrow 34-32 Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Giants <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1966232166578425980" rel="noopener">swooped in on Thursday</a>, according to Tom Pelissero, to give him a fresh start while keeping him in the same stadium where he had his tough break, MetLife Stadium.</p><p>During Sunday’s game against the Steelers, Gipson muffed a kickoff at the Jets’ 22-yard line early in the fourth quarter. The Steelers recovered the ball and two plays later, Aaron Rodgers threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Austin III, which gave Pittsburgh the lead. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-jets/jets-most-blame-nail-biting-week-1-loss-steelers">The Jets never recovered from that turnover and eventually lost</a> by two points.</p><p>Jets head coach Aaron Glenn made it clear in a press conference that the decision to release Gipson <a href="https://apnews.com/article/jets-xavier-gipson-aaron-glenn-0e4f6f9dad59888a783c2a67bf96e579" rel="noopener">wasn’t solely about the fumble</a>.</p><p>“We’re aiming to assemble the best players who can contribute,” Glenn said, per  Dennis Waszak Jr. of the Associated Press, adding that there were multiple factors involved in the decision. They meet each other in Week 2 of the 2025 NFL season, and here are bold predictions for the NFC East matchup.</p><p>Dallas came up on the short end of a 24-20 decision against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Meanwhile, the Giants were hammered by the Washington Commanders, 21-6.</p><p>Therefore, this turns out to be a critical early season contest. The loser will be 0–2, with both of those losses coming in the division.</p><h2><b>Giants QB Russell Wilson will bounce back</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/New-York-Giants-QB-Russell-Wilson.jpg"><figcaption>Amber Searls-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Wilson turned in a pitiful performance against the Commanders. He completed only 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards and couldn’t get the team in the end zone.</p><p>It doesn’t hurt matters that Wilson won’t have to deal with a full Cowboys’ secondary. Star cornerback DaRon Bland, who recently signed a big contract extension, is likely out for multiple weeks with a foot injury.</p><p>Bland’s $92 million deal with $50 million guaranteed made him the sixth-highest-paid cornerback in the league.</p><p>That doesn’t automatically mean Wilson will have a big day, but it helps. And Wilson is approaching the situation with a strong mindset. He knows rookie Jaxon Dart is waiting in the wings, but he’s <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6617801/2025/09/11/russell-wilson-giants-cowboys-remarkable-career/" rel="noopener">keeping his head down</a> and working hard, according to The Athletic.</p><p>“I think that you embrace challenge; I don’t think I’ve run from challenges,” Wilson said Wednesday while wearing his red No. 3 practice jersey. “I don’t think I’ve run from anything.</p><p>“For me, personally, my confidence never blinks. I’ve been through everything. I’ve been through all the biggest highs there could be. I’ve been through a few lows. But at the same time, I also know my confidence never wavers. The great part is that I thank God every day that I’ve got breath. I’ve got lungs. I’ve got the ability to play this game. The game that I love, and I get to do it with great guys and great people around this building. My mission is always to lead today and to do that the best way possible.”</p><p>Look for Wilson to make hay with wide receiver Malik Nabers and reach 250 yards passing. Also, look for Wilson to connect on two scoring passes.</p><h2><b>Giants’ defense will sack Dak three times</b></h2><p>Dak Prescott left the season opener with a clean jersey. With Eagles’ star pass rusher Jalen Carter taking a break after a first-seconds ejection, Dak rocked on the porch behind his offensive line and found receivers. He will likely have less time against the Giants’ revamped attack.</p><p>But head coach Brian Daboll showed respect for Dak.</p><p>“Offensively, I think Dak played really well in the first game,” Daboll said. “Decisive, I think he’s a heck of a quarterback as it is. But [he] was accurate. I think [head coach Brian Schottemheimer] had him in the flow, did a good job of mixing in run, pass, controlling the line of scrimmage. I wouldn’t say [Dak] he had a ton of production the first game.”</p><p>Schottenheimer <a href="https://cowboyswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/cowboys/2025/09/09/cowboys-schottenheimer-on-russell-wilson-jackson-dart-giants-front/86055618007/" rel="noopener">said he respects</a> the Giants’ defensive front, according to cowboyswire.com.</p><p>“This is an incredible front coming in here,” Schottenheimer said. “They’ve obviously added Abdul Carter, high draft pick, good player. But with Dexter [Lawrence] inside, and [Brian] Burns, and [Kayvon] Thibideaux. And [I’m a] big Bobby Okereke fan. I think he’s a hell of a football player.”</p><p>Still, it’s going to take a shocker for the Giants to win with Dak at the controls. The Giants haven’t won in Dallas since Prescott’s NFL debut back in Week 1 of the 2016 season. They also beat the Cowboys later that year, but they haven’t put a knockout glove on him since then.</p><p>“If we play as physical as we did the other night,” Schottenheimer said. “We play with the discipline that we had the other night. Then I think we’ll feel good going into most weeks that we’ll find a way to get a victory.”</p><h2><b>Cowboys WR George Pickens will break loose</b></h2><p>The Cowboys have to keep Pickens happy, or he will be a problem in the locker room. Four targets and 30 total yards won’t make Pickens happy. The Cowboys fed CeeDee Lamb because they were facing the Eagles. Look for them to get Pickens involved more early in the game.</p><p>The stat line should look more like eight targets, and somewhere in the range of 80-plus yards, or better.</p><p>Pickens is <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/cowboys-george-pickens-not-really-worried-about-targets-catches/" rel="noopener">playing the good-teammate</a> card, so far, according to CBS Sports.</p><p>“Just really staying open for them [Schottenheimer and Prescott],” Pickens said. “I’m not really worried about the touches, catches, all that stuff. I’m just trying to stay open for the team. I was just trying to get guys going, trying to get everything going. I felt like we were lacking out there. The energy wasn’t right, so I took it upon myself to try to boost people up,” Nabers said.</p><p>During the game, fans also noted that Nabers looked mad on the sideline, and days later, he <a href="https://x.com/OptaSTATS/status/1964814269826126199" rel="noopener">shared his side</a> of the story, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.</p><p>“Malik Nabers also said part of the perception that he was mad or unhappy is that he has ‘NBF, natural bitch face.’ Had nothing to do with lack of targets. Had 12 in game,” Raanan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Those 12 targets were the most on the team, and Nabers finished with five receptions for 71 yards. That type of volume should continue for the Giants, but now, they just have to win games to coincide with it.</p><h2><b>Giants hope to find offensive boost in Week 2</b></h2><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-news-new-york-ineptitude-83-year-history">Giants could not get anything going on offense</a> in Week 1, finishing with 157 passing yards and just 74 rushing yards. To make things worse, they were not able to get into the end zone, and this has happened to them for the past three seasons. The last NFL team to be held without a TD in at least 3 straight season openers was the Detroit Lions from 1940 to 1942, according to OptaSTATS.</p><p>Russell Wilson finished the game, completing 17 of his 37 passes for 168 yards. There were questions about whether Daboll would make a change at quarterback, but he has confirmed that Wilson will be the starter again as they’re set to face the Dallas Cowboys.</p><p>There were high hopes for the Giants improving on offense this season, and they still have some time to make things better. If things don’t get better, there is a chance that there will be changes on offense, and the first thing will probably be switching quarterbacks. They lost 21-6, with the offense in particular struggling to generate points. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-most-blame-week-1-loss-commanders">The six points the Giants scored were on two field goals,</a> and they came up empty from the 1-yard line late in the game.</p><p>With veteran Russell Wilson struggling in his Giants debut, there are calls for rookie QB Jaxson Dart to start for the team. However, <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46208962/nfl-week-2-buzz-news-updates-fantasy-intel-questions-predictions" rel="noopener">insider Dan Graziano doesn’t think that the team will start the rookie</a> yet, and it’s because of star offensive tackle Andrew Thomas. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-news-new-york-huge-andrew-thomas-update">Thomas is recovering from a Lisfranc fracture he suffered last year.</a></p><p>“Coach Brian Daboll said Monday that Russell Wilson would start again in Week 2, and their plan, as of now, is to keep going with him,” Graziano said on a piece for ESPN. “Part of me wonders if the plan might change once left tackle Andrew Thomas is back healthy and the offensive line is more trustworthy.”</p><p>Graziano mentions that the Giants’ coaching staff has a plan in place to ease in Dart before his NFL debut. With Wilson struggling as badly right now, though, the possibility of Dart starting sooner grows larger every week. Graziano also notes that while Dart is listed as the Giants’ QB2, the team could instead start another veteran, Jameis Winston, if they feel that Dart isn’t ready to start full-time yet.</p><p>“This is a matter of time, and if Wilson looks as lost and ineffective Sunday in Dallas as he did in Washington, I don’t know how much longer the Giants can hold off. Following the Commanders loss, Giants head coach Brian Daboll was asked if Wilson would start next week. “I have confidence in Russ,” Daboll said. “We have to do better around … overall.”</p><p>The next day, Daboll confirmed Wilson would start against the Cowboys. His status beyond Week 2 is unknown. The Giants’ offense underwhelmed against the Commanders, and rookie Jaxson Dart is waiting in the wings.</p><p>Wilson completed less than half of his 37 pass attempts in Week 1. Despite some promising drives, the Giants failed to score a touchdown in the season opener for the third straight year. He previously won Super Bowl 48 against the Denver Broncos. After spending the first decade of his career with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson was traded to the Broncos. He played two seasons with them before his release.</p><p>He would join the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2024 season. Wilson initially started the season as the backup to Justin Fields. Instead, they stumbled out of the gate in all-too-familiar fashion. With the NFC East as competitive as ever, the Giants needed to make a statement in their opener. What they delivered, though, was an anemic offense, porous defense, and coaching that seemed a step behind. Fans expecting signs of progress were left shaking their heads after yet another divisional defeat.</p><h2><b>Giants stumble against Washington in Week 1</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Russell-Wilson-1.jpg"><figcaption>Rich Barnes-Imagn Images.</figcaption></figure><p>The Giants began the 2025 season with a discouraging <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401772827">21-6 loss</a> to the Washington Commanders. It extended their pattern of slow starts under head coach Brian Daboll. After an offseason built on optimism for a rebound, the Giants again looked out of sync offensively. They failed to establish rhythm and faltered with breakdowns in key moments. Their defensive front managed to avoid being completely overwhelmed. However, repeated lapses ultimately sealed the defeat.</p><p>Adding to the frustration, the Giants still haven’t broken through in divisional play. They were one of just two NFL teams (the Las Vegas Raiders being the other) that failed to win a single divisional game in 2024. One week into the new campaign, Big Blue is still searching for that elusive breakthrough within the NFC East.</p><p>Here we’ll try to look at and discuss the New York Giants personnel most to blame for close Week 1 loss to Commanders.</p><h2><b>Offensive line once again collapses</b></h2><p>If the Giants were hoping their offensive line issues were behind them, Week 1 proved otherwise. Without left tackle Andrew Thomas, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-news-andrew-thomas-outlines-eventful-offseason-dealing-multiple-surgeries">who sat with a foot injury</a>, the Giants turned to free agent James Hudson III. The drop-off was obvious. However, Hudson wasn’t the only problem. Across the board, the line was beaten at the point of attack. They failed to generate any push in the run game and allowed far too much pressure on quarterback Russell Wilson.</p><p>Washington’s revamped defensive front dominated from start to finish. Yes, the Commanders have made major upgrades to their line. That said, that doesn’t excuse the Giants’ inability to match their physicality. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-news-brian-daboll-cryptic-response-russell-wilson-qb1-question">Wilson was hurried into rushed throws</a> and the offense never found rhythm. If this group doesn’t improve quickly, it’s hard to see how the Giants can compete in a division loaded with disruptive defensive lines.</p><h2><b>Run defense disappears against Washington’s ground attack</b></h2><p>Equally damning was the Giants’ inability to stop the run. Washington gashed them for 220 rushing yards. The Commanders averaged 6.9 yards per carry, which was a staggering number in any NFL game. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels repeatedly found room to scramble. He tallied 68 yards on 11 attempts, and rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt broke off an electric 42-yard run en route to 82 yards and a touchdown.</p><p>Even more concerning was the creativity with which the Commanders attacked New York’s defense. Wideout Deebo Samuel added a 19-yard touchdown run. That further exposed the Giants’ tackling issues. This was a failure of fundamentals. A defense that allows over 200 rushing yards has little chance to win, no matter what the offense does.</p><h2><b>Brian Daboll’s coaching under the spotlight</b></h2><p>Daboll entered Year 4 facing immense pressure to show that his early success wasn’t a fluke. Instead, Week 1 only magnified doubts about his leadership and ability to adjust. The Giants looked unprepared, uninspired, and undisciplined. Sure, players deserve blame for execution. However, the tone starts at the top. Daboll just did nothing to instill confidence that he has this team heading in the right direction.</p><p>There are no excuses here. Daboll’s Giants flopped badly. With his job already under scrutiny, every poor showing further erodes trust. If results don’t turn quickly, it’s hard to envision Daboll keeping his position.</p><h2><b>Receiving corps falls flat</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/NFL-New-York-Giants-at-Washington-Commanders.jpg"><figcaption>Peter Casey-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Giants’ receivers were equally uninspiring. Malik Nabers led the way with five receptions for 71 yards. Still, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-news-malik-nabers-breaks-silence-intense-moment-brian-daboll">even he expressed frustration</a> with the lack of offensive punch. That even sparked a heated sideline exchange with Daboll. Beyond Nabers, production was almost nonexistent. The rest of the pass-catchers combined for just 12 receptions and 97 yards. That’s a woeful showing in a league that thrives on dynamic aerial attacks.</p><p>Theo Johnson, Darius Slayton, and Jalin Hyatt combined for just one catch totaling five yards. That level of invisibility from supposed playmakers is unacceptable. Without consistent threats, the Giants’ offense looked toothless. If this pattern continues, defenses will double Nabers and dare the rest of the receiving corps to beat them.</p><h2><b>Final thoughts</b></h2><p>The Giants’ Week 1 loss to Washington wasn’t just about losing one divisional game. It was about reinforcing the perception that this team hasn’t progressed. The offensive line remains a sieve, the run defense collapsed entirely, the receiving corps lacked bite, and Daboll failed to rally his team. These are systemic problems that have plagued New York for multiple seasons.</p><p>The NFC East leaves no room for passengers. If the Giants want to break out of mediocrity, accountability is non-negotiable. That means better coaching, sharper execution, and an urgency that was absent in Week 1. Linebacker Micah McFadden is a promising young linebacker from Indiana. X-rays on game day were negative, but further testing showed McFadden will be out a while. The hope is it won’t be the whole season.”</p><p>If McFadden is not out for the entire season, then that is massive news for the defense. The Giants contain an elite defense led by their powerful pass rush. McFadden has been a consistent performer on that side of the ball since 2023. He has back-to-back seasons with 100+ tackles and 60 solo tackles. He also has five career fumble recoveries and six career sacks. He played in all 16 games in his rookie year, rushing for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns. He added another 91 catches on 121 targets and 721 yards and four touchdowns through the air.</p><p>The following year, Barkley missed three games, and the Giants went 4-12. He then missed 14 games with a torn ACL in 2020. Barkley would eventually leave the Giants in 2024, signing with the Eagles. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">New York Giants</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/vikings-news-jj-mccarthy-hits-justin-jefferson-first-nfl-td">Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings duked it out</a> in an early-season NFC North showdown, the Manning Brothers, Eli and Payton, brought Saquon Barkley onto their ESPN 2 <i>ManningCast</i> to discuss winning the Super Bowl, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-biggest-concern-dramatic-week-1-win-cowboys">Philadelphia Eagles’ early dominance</a>, and <i>Saquon</i>, his new documentary executive-produced by Martin Scorsese.</p><p>Breaking down the project, which debuts on Amazon Prime later this season before the Eagles and Giants face off in the 2025 edition of the “Barkley Bowl,” No. 26 was pitching a twist for <i>Saquon 2</i> by life-long Giant Eli Manning: switch sides at halftime and lead the Giants to victory. While Barkley wasn’t into the idea, he does believe that Giants fans could get something out of watching the show, as it <a href="https://x.com/ESPNNFL/status/1965229320755916816" rel="noopener">shows his entire journey on the Gridiron</a>.</p><p>“I don’t think any Giants fan ever wants to see me in a Giants uniform again. You know, once a Giant, always a Giant. I think, you know, that’s kind of, I hope that still stays true for me. But the beauty of this that, it’s the growth of the last five years from my injury up to going to Philly and winning a Super Bowl,” Barkley told the Manning Brothers.</p><p>“But it shows like the trials and tribulations and all the work that I put in to get back into it, but also shows the love and support that I have for the Giants organization because at the end of the day, you know, the praise and all the love was shown in Philadelphia and the great stuff I did last year, but Lee, Phil, you know, the names go on and on and on. Ron, that helped me to get, you know, back to that moment to play football again. And I love it. It was cool to be able to reflect on it and see myself and see the growth over those last five years. And I think the fans will love it too.”</p><p>While Barkley’s time in New York didn’t ultimately end the way everyone might have hoped, as injuries limited his playing time, the teams were (mostly) bad, and the organization chose to prioritize Daniel Jones over their top rusher, in the end, it was an important chapter in his career all the same. Barkley doesn’t make it to Philadelphia without the Giants letting him go, and wouldn’t be a Super Bowl champion or a 2,000-yard rusher without those negotiations either. In fact, they set <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-news-new-york-ineptitude-83-year-history">an 83-year-old mark for ineptitude</a>. But they’re sticking to their guns as head coach Brian Daboll <a href="https://x.com/DDuggan21/status/1965104915078152407" rel="noopener">made a quarterback decision</a> for Week 2 versus the Cowboys, according to a post on X by Dan Duggan.</p><p>“Daboll confirmed that Russell Wilson will start Sunday against the Cowboys.”</p><p>The Giants managed only three points in two trips inside the 5-yard line in a 21-6 loss to the Commanders on Sunday. Daboll said it <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/recap/_/gameId/401772827" rel="noopener">made the difference</a>, according to ESPN.</p><p>“Obviously, six points it’s tough to win a game,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said. “We left 11 points out there in the red zone.”</p><h2><b>Giants HC Brian Daboll sticking with the veteran</b></h2><p>Wilson didn’t exactly earn another start. Trailing 21-6 late in the game, the Giants had a first-and-goal from the 3-yard line. Four incomplete passes from Wilson turned the ball over to the Commanders.</p><p>For the game, Wilson completed only 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards. It was the kind of performance that led to speculation the Giants might turn to rookie Jaxson Dart.</p><p>Daboll said the offense <a href="https://www.giants.com/news/quotes-9-7-coach-brian-daboll-qb-russell-wilson-dl-dexter-lawrence-olb-brian-burns-wr-malik-nabers" rel="noopener">was poor overall</a>, according to giants.com.</p><p>“Yeah, I’d say with everybody offensively, that’s all of us included, we all got to be better,” Daboll said. “Every coach, every player. You have six points there, just not good enough. We have to do better there.”</p><p>But Daboll said he did not consider bringing Dart into the game. He said he stands behind Wilson.</p><p>“I have confidence in Russell,” Daboll said. “We got to do better around overall, coaches, players, everybody. So, it will get focused and ready to go on Dallas.</p><p>“We’ll evaluate the tape. This game isn’t on Russell Wilson. It’s not on Russell Wilson. Want to make that clear. We’ve got to do a better job all the way around.”</p><p>The Cowboys will also enter the Week 2 matchup with a record of 0-1. It was a disappointing start to the season for the Giants.</p><p>Big Blue’s defense held up for the majority of the game, holding Jayden Daniels’ offense scoreless in the second half until <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/washington-commanders/commanders-deebo-samuel-sr-looks-like-vintage-self-with-electric-td-run-vs-giants">Deebo Samuel scored his first touchdown as a Commander</a> with seven minutes remaining. An offensive output of six points, however, disqualifies Big Blue from receiving credit for a gritty loss.</p><p>Fourth-year head coach Brian Daboll cut to the chase after the game, starting his media availability by crediting Washington and discussing the offense’s role in their defeat.</p><p>“Again, certainly not good enough,” Daboll stated. “Tough game. Good week we had, and- give them a lot of credit. Just, bottom line, it was not good enough.”</p><p>“I thought there was times we did some good things,” Daboll opined, “but <a href="https://x.com/SNYGiants/status/1964798318661259372" rel="noopener">obviously not enough offensively</a>. Six points, it’s tough to win a game.”</p><p>Starting quarterback <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-news-brian-daboll-cryptic-response-russell-wilson-qb1-question">Russell Wilson’s struggles under center</a> headlined the rough offensive performance. The veteran completed only 17 of his 37 passing attempts for 168 yards and no touchdown passes. He didn’t hand the ball off for any touchdowns either. Only kicker Graham Gano scored for the Giants on Sunday.</p><p>Daboll spoke to the team’s lack of consistency on offense leading to missed opportunities against Washington.</p><p>“Didn’t feel like we got into much of a rhythm, particularly on early downs on the offensive side of it,” the coach told reporters postgame. “I think we left 11 points out there in the redzone…we got to do a better job on the offensive side of the football – players, coaches, everybody.”</p><p>The Giants’ offense had an unpolished feel throughout the game, despite Daboll feeling like they were well-prepared for the opener.</p><p>The Giants play in Dallas next Sunday and may already be starting to feel pressure to get on track. After the week one rout, Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen carry an 18-33-1 record into week two. Neither is remotely likely to be relieved of their duties in the case of a loss. The 36-year-old signal-caller went 17-of-37 for 168 yards and zero touchdowns. He threw four straight incompletions in the latter half of the fourth quarter.</p><p>Giants coach Brian Daboll <a href="https://apnews.com/article/giants-commanders-score-dbdbcc3d13ca610f43a6ee47033e253f" rel="noopener">didn’t hide his displeasure</a> after the defeat.</p><p>“Obviously, (with only) six points, it’s tough to win a game. The New York offense, led by newly signed quarterback Russell Wilson, did not provide a lot to write home about in this one, as Wilson completed less than half of his 37 pass attempts and finished with just 168 yards on the day.</p><p>Some have wondered aloud whether a quarterback change might be on the horizon for the Giants considering the excellent preseason that rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has, and some fuel was dumped on that fire with recent reporting throughout the week that the Giants’ offensive coaching staff had actually prepared a package of plays for the rookie quarterback in the event that he were to enter the game.</p><p>However, that was<a href="https://x.com/art_stapleton/status/1964788918911660514" rel="noopener"> not the message relayed</a> by head coach Brian Daboll during his postgame interview.</p><p>“I did not,” said Campbell after the game, when asked if he had at any point considered handing the keys to Dart, per Art Stapleton of Northjersey.com on X, formerly Twitter.</p><h2><b>A rough start for the Giants</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/New-York-Giants-head-coach-Brian-Daboll.jpg"><figcaption>Peter Casey-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Russell Wilson was expected to provide a big upgrade over the Motley crew of quarterbacks that the Giants trotted out over the course of the 2024 season.</p><p>While Giants fans are well aware that he is no longer the MVP candidate version of himself that existed with the Seattle Seahawks, they were still likely hoping for more than what they got on Sunday afternoon against the Commanders.</p><p>Considering how good Dart looked during the team’s preseason slate, it should come as no surprise that there are already growing calls for the Giants’ coaching staff to give him the reins, even though non injury-related quarterback changes are extraordinarily rare at this early point of the season.</p><p>It’s likely that Wilson will have at least a few more weeks to try to get things on track before the Giants’ coaching staff seriously considers making a change.</p><p>The Giants will next take the field on the road against the Dallas Cowboys on September 14.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Quarterback Russell Wilson struggled throughout the contest, as the offense failed to record a single touchdown. Shortly after the game, head coach Brian Daboll shared a cryptic response about Wilson’s role on the offense moving forward.</p><p>Daboll, who is 50 years old, <a href="https://x.com/JordanRaanan/status/1964790965262295129" rel="noopener">did not immediately claim</a> that Wilson will be starting for the Giants in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. However, Brian Daboll did admit he is still confident in Russell Wilson in his statement.</p><p>“Brian Daboll asked if Russell Wilson is his starter next week. Says it’s just right after the game. This loss wasn’t on Wilson. ‘I have confidence in Russ,’ said Daboll. ‘We have to do better around … overall.'”</p><p>The 36-year-old quarterback finished the game with 169 passing yards while completing 17 passes out of 37 attempts. Brian Daboll and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-giants/giants-news-malik-nabers-has-fans-losing-it-route-running-wizardry">Giants attempted to feed the ball</a> to wide receiver Malik Nabers throughout the contest, as the second-year pro had 12 targets on the day. Unfortunately, Wilson and Nabers couldn’t connect more often, as the star wideout had just five receptions for 71 yards.</p><p>New York made changes at quarterback in the offseason after deciding to move on from Daniel Jones. The front office signed both Wilson and Jameis Winston out of free agency while also selecting rookie Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Giants fans are antsy to see what Dart can do under center, as he’s the future of the franchise. But it appears they’ll have to wait for now.</p><p>Brian Daboll might have to field questions about the quarterback room throughout the offseason. Especially if Russell Wilson continues to struggle like he did on Sunday.
