Though this is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-chris-paul-nba-history-retirement-announcement">Paul’s last season in the league</a>, he has shown that he still has some value on a contending team, and there are <a href="https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1djGXWOawRVKZ" rel="noopener">three specific teams</a> that could look to add him, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.</p><p>“There has been some interest in him from some teams who expressed interest in him during the offseason,” Siegel said. “Some other teams have point guard needs and I wouldn’t be shocked if how we were last year and Dennis Schroder was traded to the Warriors, I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw something similar this year with Chris Paul where he winds up going to a contender where he contribute whether that’s in the starting lineup or off the bench with 15 to 18 minutes a game.</p><p>“If he wants to go to a team like the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Houston Rockets, two teams that have been rumored to have a level of interest in Chris Paul… Another one that had interest in him over the offseason that I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re interested in him again is the New York Knicks.”</p><p>Paul would be a nice addition to any three of those teams, but there’s a chance that he would not be a starter in those situations. The Rockets would be the one team where he could have the chance to start, and with not much depth at the guard position, he would get some key minutes.</p><p>To end his career, Paul wanted the chance to stay close to family, but at this point, he will have to sacrifice that dream a little bit and broaden his horizons if he wants to play in his final season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His life consists of sports, music and Seinfeld.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Steve Nash and LeBron James marveled at the Houston Rockets’ <a href="https://x.com/funakistats/status/1998646883384766545" rel="noopener">elite offensive rebounding ability</a> on their latest “Mind the Game” podcast, a strength that has helped redefine their identity.</p><p>“Steven Adams is getting over one in four offensive rebounds when he is on the court,” Nash explained. “Our highest values are lay-ups, free throws, then offensive rebounds. Because offensive rebounds lead to more lay-ups, more free throws, or kick-out threes. So you can see the value of Steven Adams to that offense, when we don’t really consider him an offensive player.”</p><p>LeBron followed by emphasizing just how disruptive Adams is on the glass.</p><p>“You know, as an opposing team, when you face Houston, one of the main focuses is Steven Adams,” LeBron said. “You need the whole team, plus the bench, and the coaching staff, you’re your security team, to box him out. He’s ridiculously strong. You can’t box him out with two people; you need three or four guys around him.”</p><p>Nash added that Adams’ gravity directly helps his teammates.</p><p>“Then other guys get opportunities, because you have to double, triple him on the glass,” Nash said. “He puts himself in position that he can make a play on the ball even when three guys are trying to box him out… incredible impact. It’s a pretty cool adjustment [for the league].”</p><h2><b>The Rockets’ new identity</b></h2><p>In a league that has been dominated by three-point shooting for a decade, the Rockets currently own the <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2026.html">No. 2 offensive rating</a> by being the best rebounding team in the league. Despite shooting the fewest threes and playing at the second-slowest pace in the league, Houston succeeds by flirting with the best rebounding rate of this century.</p><p>“Not sounding mean or anything, but if you know your team isn’t that great at shooting, you’re gonna need more attempts,” explained Adams.</p><p>And while he gets <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/kevin-durant-grateful-how-fueling-rockets-historic-start">a lot of deserved attention</a> for that, New Zealand’s impact goes far beyond the 32-year-old center.</p><h2><b>New Zealand’s influence</b></h2><p>Paul Henare was the head coach of New Zealand’s national team from 2015 to 2019. He viewed offensive rebounding like the triple-option offense in college football: a way for less-talented teams to level the playing field. While NBA teams steered away from crashing too many players on the offensive glass, theoretically making them more vulnerable in transition defense, Henare taught his group to be ultra-aggressive, sending all five players to the rim.</p><p>To address the transition defense, Henare added an element to offensive rebounding called “tagging up,” in which his players don’t just crash the glass recklessly, but instead approach defenders at specific areas of the floor and block their pathways to leaking out in transition, a term you’ll hear throughout college basketball nowadays, too.</p><p>Current New York Knicks coach Mike Brown was one of the coaches who hopped on a video call with Henare in 2021 to learn more, as he prepared to coach the Nigerian national team in the Tokyo Olympics. Which makes it no coincidence that <a href="https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/283074/NBA-Teams-Embrace-Aggressive-Offensive-Rebounding-Strategy-as-League-Wide-Trend-Surges" rel="noopener">the number of NBA teams who rebounded more than 30% of their misses</a> climbed from just one in 2020-2021, to five the following season. And this year? 20 teams are doing it. But none more effectively than the Rockets.</p><h2><b>Ime Udoka’s early adoption</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Rockets-head-coach-Ime-Udoka-reacts-in-Suns-game.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>For Houston’s head coach, Ime Udoka, his interest also began in 2021, while still coaching the Boston Celtics. Udoka experimented with a larger emphasis on offensive rebounding with the Celtics summer league team that year by sending three players to the glass on each shot. That eventually extended to their G-League team, where Maine started to send four guys to crash.</p><p>It’s no coincidence that Udoka’s former team is now fifth in offensive rebounding. Meanwhile, the Portland Trailblazers, led by Tiago Splitter, Udoka’s former assistant coach in Houston, rank second, only behind the Rockets.</p><p>And when Udoka took over in Houston, the Rockets traded for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-news-alperen-sengun-about-steven-adams-presence">New Zealand’s own Steven Adams</a> mid-season, even though he was injured and unable to play that year. Still, the trade has paid off enormously since.</p><h2><b>Historic Numbers in Houston</b></h2><p>This year, Houston opened the season with the tallest starting five in NBA history, and, through 21 games, is recovering 41% of their missed shots, which would annihilate the modern-era single-season record (dating back to 1996 when the NBA began play-by-play tracking).</p><p>According to Second Spectrum, the Rockets have won the offensive rebound battle<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6859085/2025/12/09/nba-offensive-rebounding-new-zealand-coaching/?source=athletic_thebounce_newsletter&amp;campaign=15965420&amp;userId=5399305" rel="noopener"> 56% of the time</a> when sending three players to the glass. For some veterans, the shift requires unlearning years of habits and coaching.</p><p>“There are certain guys that are a little older, more seasoned,” Udoka said. “They are who they are at this point, but we still want them to go and be a body. We see the numbers and how it impacts us.”</p><p>The league seems to be transitioning toward offensive rebounding, but no team is doing it better than the Rockets. For Udoka, this change has been four years in the making. For Adams, it’s a natural fit. And for Houston, it might just be enough to carry them into championship contention.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But as super as it has been, their kryptonite has emerged: navigating the second night <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-news-alperen-sengun-about-steven-adams-presence">of a back-to-back without Steven Adams</a>.</p><p>Houston became the final team in the NBA to play a back-to-back, doing so for the first time on Dec. 1. And so far, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/3-major-concerns-rockets-1st-back-to-back">the Rockets have dropped both games when playing on no rest</a>. First to the Utah Jazz, then Saturday night against the Dallas Mavericks, two current non-playoff teams with fewer than 10 wins apiece.</p><p>The problem for Houston? Adams isn’t in the rotation for those games. The Rockets are intentionally holding him out on the second night of back-to-backs.</p><p>And in those games, Houston has struggled across the board. Their defense hasn’t been nearly as sharp (including surrendering a season-high in points to Utah). Their rebounding, typically the best in the league with Adams, has slipped noticeably. And on offense, the absence of Adam’s screening is felt when trying to create opportunities without a true point guard.</p><p>Despite these early warning signs, the Rockets don’t plan to deviate from their approach just yet.</p><h2><b>Ime Udoka won’t change Steven Adams plan yet</b></h2><p>When asked about Adams’ availability, head coach Ime Udoka said that this remains the plan “for now.”</p><p>Adams is 32 and now two years removed from the knee injury that cost him his entire first season in Houston, and eight years removed from playing a full campaign.</p><p>The Rockets are managing his workload with the postseason in mind, prioritizing the 16-game playoff schedule over the 82-game regular season grind.</p><p>Still, Houston must ensure it reaches the postseason in a strong position. Even with only two back-to-backs played, the Rockets sit just percentage points away from the No. 5 seed in a deep Western Conference.</p><p>As the schedule toughens, how well will the Rockets be able to hold off the teams behind them? Houston has 12 more back-to-backs in their remaining 58 games. Add in the fact that their star, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/kevin-durant-still-buckets-37-warning-signs">Kevin Durant, is already 37 years old and will also need to limit his minutes</a> at some point, as well. Which further shrinks the margin for error.</p><p>Houston’s next back-to-back includes the Denver Nuggets in a huge game later this month, followed by the Sacramento Kings, which suddenly becomes a tougher matchup without Adams.</p><p>Udoka’s team is very good at winning with their distinctive brand of basketball: slower pace, limited three-pointers, and the best rebounding attack in the league. But can Houston win when required to play a different way? Such as when Adams is unavailable, and their rebounding advantage disappears.</p><p>At some point, the Rockets will run into a tough matchup, or a team that has solved their style, especially over a long playoff series. To win a title, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/houston-rockets-strong-start-doesnt-guarantee-contenders">Houston will need a reliable change-up</a>. And, so far, they haven’t found one just yet.</p><p>Right now, the Rockets go the way of Adams. They know they can trust the future Hall of Famer to produce when healthy, but what can truly put the franchise over the top is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-news-why-alperen-sengun-wants-move-past-baby-jokic-nickname">if Alperen Sengun crosses into undeniable superstardom</a> this season. He is definitely looking the part through the first quarter of the campaign. Fans consistently expect the Turkish center to put on a show.</p><p>He will not be able to do that on Saturday, however. Sengun <a href="https://x.com/UnderdogNBA/status/1997456707333538086" rel="noopener">will not suit up</a> for tonight’s road game versus the Dallas Mavericks, via the Underdog NBA X account. The 2024 All-Star missed Friday’s 117-98 win over the Phoenix Sun <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-news-why-alperen-sengun-late-scratch-suns">because of an illness</a> and will sit out again for the same reason. Houston should have the talent to get by without him, but every game counts in the crowded Western Conference.</p><p>While the near-invincible Thunder (22-1) hold a solid grasp on first place, there are just two games separating second place from sixth. The Rockets (15-5) could quickly find themselves in the middle of the pack if they lose a couple in a row. Steven Adams is out with right ankle tendinopathy, so the Rockets’ frontcourt is quite thin. Though, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-dallas-gets-crucial-daniel-gafford-injury-update-exited-heat-game-early">Mavericks will also be shorthanded</a> in the low-post area. Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II are both inactive. Klay Thompson is also unavailable.</p><p>If the Rockets were going to be sans Sengun, this could be the right time for it. Anthony Davis and Cooper Flag are certainly dangerous, however. Houston head coach Ime Udoka will look to Durant, Amen Thompson and a capable supporting cast to lift the squad to victory.</p><p>Alperen Sengun will hopefully feel good as new by Monday. He has a few days to get right before the Rockets clash with the Clippers on Thursday. They boomed from there on, outscoring Phoenix 73-41 in the second and third periods as their opponents never recovered from that run.</p><p>Shot selection, perimeter shooting and ball movement made the difference in this matchup. The Rockets dominated in all three categories by making 59% of their total shots, knocking down 10 3-pointers, and creating 25 assists. It wasn’t the same for the Suns as they made just 39% of their chances, converted five triples, and dished out 14 assists.</p><p>Five players scored in double-digits for Houston in the win, including Durant. Amen Thompson led the team in scoring with 31 points on 12-of-17 shooting overall and 6-of-6 from charity stripe. Jabari Smith Jr. came next with 16 points and two rebounds. Meanwhile, Aaron Holiday and Reed Sheppard provided 10 points each.</p><p>Houston improved to a 15-5 record on the season, holding the second spot in the Western Conference standings.
